How To Make Adjuster Cap Tool For SR Suntour Forks

I show how to make a tool to remove the adjuster cap from SR Suntour forks. There appear to be at least a couple sizes of adjuster caps. My homemade tool is for the small size adjuster cap. The shocks in the video are SR Suntour T890 forks.

Thanks for the ideas! I made one from a PVC pipe, and it worked great. Believe it or not, that was the easy part about rebuilding a Suntour fork.

I managed to improvise with a pair of long nose pliers to get the cap unscrewed. If you hold the pliers so the tips are pointing down towards the ground (assuming your bike is not upside down) and put each tip in a space on opposite sides of the cap, if you apply enough downwards pressure and squeeze hard enough, then twist anti-clockwise, you should be able to generate enough force to unscrew them. Once the screw is loose it should be easy going. I didn't have access to a dremel or grinder and didn't want to have to wait a few days on ordering the actual tool.

There is risk of damaging the plastic cap.

@@RJTheBikeGuy You're right, I should probably have mentioned this. Luckily the tips of my pliers fitted quite nicely in the gaps but the cap did seem to be made of pretty soft plastic which would have been easily damaged.

And since there are only 2 points of contact, all the force is focused at those points instead distributed more evenly around.

I have problems with soft metal bolts being rounded easilly. Now I have a plastic suspension cap on my forks that needs to be adjusted or even removed. *dies interanlly*

This helped a lot....I actually took the piece of steer tube i had cut off the fork and used that to make the tool...it apparently is the perfect diameter si io only needs the groovs,a hole in which to insert a bar(for leverege...ex. a screwdriver)and that is it....now i don't have to strip the notches with needle nose pliers.

+The Religion Killer I have since managed to get another tool like the one shown. They come in two sizes that I know of. One for mountain bike shocks and one for 700c shocks.

+RJ The Bike Guy well,i guess that is the ideal way to go...but i have 2 sr suntour forks(one from 2010,and one from 2015 in place for the older one)and on the first i stripped the little teeth on the cap,so only about half are still usable...today i saw the piece leftover from when i fitted the new fork and it came to mind to make this tool out of it... One question,though:would shortening the elastomer inside the spring make it less harsh as the fork compresses?(currently it ramps up a lot towards the third-of-the-way point and i can not get full travel out of it)

+The Religion Killer I doubt it. You probably want the same size elastomer but a softer one.

Wish I'd have found this vid before I smashed at my suntours with water pump pliers... The cap went back in ok but (as happens when you do it like this, ultimately it's a one shot deal) the plastic crushed so now it's slightly like a rounded off nut, with no sharp edges for the pliers to grab onto. I'm gonna have a look to see if a tool like this could save them. I'm thinking that if need be, I could make the teeth of the tool bigger than they should be, by maybe 0.25mm or so, then smash the tool onto the cap, re-squaring the edges of the splines and creating a nice tight fit.

+Ciaran Cargan Yeah it's worse than I remember - it's totally screwed. Best idea I've got now is to make up a tool for some scrap suntours I got back off my friend, raid them for the adjuster, hope that someone is looking out for me when I come to get the broken cap out of the ones I'm using, then see if the cap out of the scrap ones fits the forks in the bike. If not I'll have needlessly disabled my bike and be without a paddle. There will then be subsequent swearing and tantrums...

Are the grinder bits dremel originals or you getting by with something different? How long did it take to grind?

I think these grinder bits were from Dremel. I maybe spent 15 minutes total grinding I think. Making the video makes the job take longer.

There are two version of the black plastic tool. A larger and a smaller one. The smaller one fits perfectly. I got mine off www.amazon.de/gp/product/B002RLR2CE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I actually have them now. The smaller one fit hybrid type forks, and the larger one mountain bike forks.

Thanks Tim & RJ good to know there are two different tools for hybrid & mtb. I have a Suntour XCT fork that is not seized but rather stiff and the springs & mechanism inside squeak and groan. It sounds like the fork needs a service/overhaul. I have never attempted this job before however I have built several bikes so I believe it should be ok for me to attempt. Thanks for the great tutorial videos RJ!
