Someone posted that the stripes on the watermelon indicate ripeness, but I've always looked for the yellow bottom where the watermelon sits. I read somewhere that the spot on the bottom goes through different shades and the more yellow sgade is what to look for. I have always had nice sweet watermelons using that method, but then again the stripes were dark green as well. 🤷 So maybe try both methods. 😁👍

I always see people bang on them like drums and I was told to bang on it and if it sounds hollow like a basketball than it's a good one if not it's not as ripe so I am wanting to check this new method

I look at the belly for the yellow spot, if that is not there I resort to thumping.

Karla Grymes Every fresh juice beats the hell out of store bought. For one thing, store bought isn't really juice. Jack LaLaine juicers are awesome. Especially if you use cantaloupe.

That sparkling water idea is brilliant. I can almost taste Aqua Sandia made with sparkling water on a 100 deg day. Umm- ummm. Thanks for the idea.

victoria munoz Not only do you look for the yellow spot, but you also look for the beige webbing which mean high bee pollination while the vine was flowering which heavily affects the ripe watermelon's sweetness. Also, if the stem is still attached, you should be able to easily remove it. If not, it's not ripe. At the stem area, look at the color of the circle. Green & greenish is underripe. Beige is great. Grey, dark brown, or black is overripe. It should thump with a hollow sound. And if the watermelon is oddly shaped, it had a hard time growing due to issues with nutrient or water uptake, not having enough space, or the ability to receive ample sunlight. I like the biggest melon I can find, but many swear that medium sized are more likely to be the best. Personally, I find if you make all of the other checks, large size doesn't make much of a difference. Just don't get the GMO or heavily fertilized ones. Unfortunately, sometimes you may not know when receiving or buying a watermelon, for whatever reason. So if you find there are no seeds when you open it or the seeds are very tiny or very flat, with nothing inside & bright white, you may might want to just gift it to a nondiscriminatory neighbor, because it's most likely GMO. Also, you might want to pass if there are huge air wedges inside as well as they are a sign of either GMO or a victim of mega over-fertilization, with a product such as Miracle Gro. I'm not dissing MG per se, but too much of anything has got to be bad for the body. Just saying, you are & your children are what you eat.

Darth Mal. l disagree.....the spot goes from white to dark yellow. lf you wait till the spot is dark yellow it has gone too far and will be pithie especially around the seeds. Best flavor is when the spot is a medium yellow. Yes the mellon was in contact with the soil ar the spot but that has nothing to do with ripeness...same with the stripes.
