The secret to keeping amaryllis thriving for years is to keep the plants actively growing AFTER they have finished blooming. After the flowers have faded, cut them off to prevent seed formation. Seed formation will deplete important energy reserves in the bulb and reduce blooming.

I’ve never put my plants in the dark nor cut them back- I’ve had them for about 15 years . This year they had two blooming periods with 4 blooms on each stem .

I live in the tropics and we never undergo temperatures this low. I leave the bulbs in their pots and just put them through a period of complete dryness. When I start rewatering, they grow new leaves and then flowers - easy. They might not all bloom, but I don't care. I'm happy to get the flowers that I do. If I continue to water regularly some will still bloom in early summer, but a lot fewer.

Thanks for sharing. I always emphasize that dormancy can help the flower buds mature, but actually it is not a must for reblooming.

I just let my amaryllis grow in its pot all summer (cutting off the bloom when faded). In fall I set the pot in a cool 50-60° place to die down over the winter, no water while inside. Then in spring bring the pot outside, after frost, add a bit of fertilizer, and they always bloom again beautifully. This seems like an awful lot of unnecessary work. They can, of course be repotted in spring as necessary.

In warm climate, Amaryllis don't go dormant unless you mimic the environment. What you do is just the right thing, but actually It needs different treatment in different zones.

Hi, I live in S,Eastern Spain…we grow our amaryllis in pots outside under pine trees,never bring them inside and never lift the bulbs unless they produce to many extra side bulbs,which is often,and then split them up and repot…is this normal??
@SelectionLife5 ай бұрын
You have an excellent climate for Amaryllis, friend! You have a mild winter there, and in the hot summer, your pine trees can provide shade for your amaryllis. That's fantastic! In some zones, people have to bring them indoors to protect them from frosting. Just continue caring for them as you always do, only looking for others' experience when you meet problems.

Thanks for the great video. I overwintered my bulbs this past year and I did everything as you did except I left the leaves on when I put it in the dark because I had seen somewhere that they will draw energy from that. All of my bulbs are producing lots of great leaves but not one of them is flowering. Guessing I should have cut off the leaves? Will they still possibly bloom but late? I put them in in late October and took them out in mid December. I wanted color after Christmas. Thanks again for the great video and tips.
@SelectionLife5 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for sharing. I think they will bloom later, as long as they have enough growing time after the last bloom. When were their blooms last year? And what was the ambient temperature in dormancy? Regarding whether to cut off the leaves, I saw different opinions too. I would suggest keeping the leaves for some time after stopping watering to prepare for dormancy(pre-dormant stage). Then cut off the leaves when they shrivel and put them in a dark and cool place(complete dormant stage).

Mya are.llis that bloomed for Christmas I put them outside and we had aheavy rain storm . Yesterday something told me to feel the bulbs I had 5 in a pot 4 of them felt mushy and sure enough rot. I took them out dirt cleaned them and scraped the bottoms sprayed with poroxide and pot some root tone with fun-chide and left to dry out I am going to repot today. Sad,but I will never give upon y bulbs. Can you recommend an up to date on care of Amarillo’s please
@SelectionLife5 ай бұрын
Your treatment was right. I guess by then they had not grown a strong root system, and the heavy rain would go into the center of the bulb through the residue of the flower stalk, resulting in bulb rot. I would suggest you use well-draining soil and repot them with 2/3 exposed. Place them in a sheltered place until the roots have developed.

Thank you, this has been an interesting video. I bought 4 amaryllis from a company ( I am in UK) in October. I was hoping they would flower for xmas however nothing happened. I complained to the company and they did give me my money back and said that the bulbs were not ment to be flowering at xmas. I told them my supermarket one was already flowering and they said that the supermarket ones were forced. I also had some from previous years which I brought out of dormancy and unfortunately they did not flower but at least have grown leaves. I have however noticed a couple of days ago that one from the company now has a stalk and will flower but it has no leaves. Do you have any advice as to why the others have not grown at all. I feel if a company is selling them in October then surely they are for flowering at Christmas. Should I put them into dormancy or is it possible they may grow and flower later in the year. Thank you for any advice you may have.

Being in the Northern Hemisphere, and if you buy bulbs grown in the Northern Hemisphere, the bulbs will normally bloom in spring or early summer, unless they've been put into dormancy before selling. Those bloom in Xmas are either from the Southern Hemisphere or forced. The company was right. Just let them grow under sunlight now, I think the rest will bloom in April- June. If they don't bloom this spring, don't worry. Just let them grow, and then you can force them into dormancy in September for blooming in Xmas. Check related content here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btiolNyjmNbSqWg.html Don't miss the final part, it's about the timing for Xmas blooms.
