We put the trusty Ampeg SVT-810E up against some of our high-output bass cabs- specifically our Six10 and Big Twin 3. We’re using the Ampeg SVT-CL bass valve amp head for all of the cabs, kindly loaned by the excellent people at Brighton Electric.
We also welcome Geoff in front of the camera for the first time, who has been busy gigging and touring with Chubby and the Gang around the UK and Europe.

Interesting to hear all three cabinets, especially as outside of small/pub gigs the sound man is taking a DI off the preamp and making the cabinet just a big monitor. Hearing a cab sim through the frfr cab and comparing it to the 810 would also be good, so many bass players, producers, engineers and other musicians know and can eq in/around the 810 tone. Using something like a Mexican P bass would also be a good reference too as they're so prevalent

Brooo you MUST review your 3x10 cab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That might be the perfect balance of rig for gigging imo...bigger than 2x10s but smaller than the 4x10 and im sure it smashes every 2x10 out there and probably 4x10 cabs as well....im really excited about this cab 🙏

Love this video Alex The things I absolutely hate about Ampeg are The low notes sound huge and thick but any notes above E2 (7th fret A string) just sound weedy adding compression makes it worse If you play a low B it just lacks energy If you play anything on the dusty end you pretty much disappear Harmonics are inaudible There’s no articulation and as you said the transient response is noticeably slow They’re lumpy physically and acoustically Love the sound of Barefaced and would love to own one in the future Keep up the good work

If I had the money, I was younger and played bigger venues bt3 all day long, 610 is great yet still to big for a local circuit. We really need to hear the three10, beside the two12, the different voicing, same size, similar wieght, similar price. Similar volume. Unable to choose a one cab solution until we hear them side by side. Brilliant vid.

I'll never forget playing a gig at the Whisky a few years ago and some bass player in one of the other bands on the bill was rolling his 8x10 SVT cab down the sidewalk on Sunset and into the club. The dude couldn't have been more than 145lbs soaking wet....tiny dude but man, he was dedicated to his tone so much so that he rolled into the club with his own 810 cab. Not a bandmate in sight to help him. Fuckin hilarious!! I'm diggin that 610!!

That's commitment! We've been experimenting with the SVT and 810 vs our Four10 and Super Twin, for even smaller alternatives. I like the SVT a lot, and it feels a lot more giggable with a less enormous cab. Regarding the Whisky, that was why Timmy C got in touch before Prophets of Rage started - he wanted a 2x10" instead of one of his 4x10" cabs to downsize his triple amp triple cab rig so it would fit on the stage there - and thus the conversion to Barefaced!

Cool Thanks for sharing that backstory about Tim Commeford....I did not know he uses your products! That's great! Yeah, the stage at the Whisky and many, many other stages at reputable venues here in the Los Angeles area are not very big and really don't require much more than a 2x10" or 2x12" cab. The larger venues make you go through the house monitors so your bass cab on stage is really just your personal monitor, at best. I am enjoying your videos...very educational. Thanks for your efforts to explain so much to non engineers. Cheers! @@BarefacedAudio

@@TimpBizkit our goal has never been to make the lightest bass cabs, it’s always been about getting the best possible sound and maximum output from a given size. The low weight is effectively a side effect of the unique way we build cabs.

Both sound great. Different but great. True, the BF has much more clarity all around, and deeper lows, the Ampeg has its place if you’re looking the complete Ampeg tone, even if the fidelity is sacrificed. It does sound more “right” even if technically not as great.
@BarefacedAudio
@BarefacedAudio 7 ай бұрын
Yes, there are lots of reasons the SVT+810 became the standard (although the main one is that it was LOUD and robust). So this was an AB test, not changing settings, to hear how they compared. Drive the preamp a bit harder, back off the treble and bass and bump the mids and you can get the Six10 to sound incredibly similar to the Ampeg 810, certainly within the range of sounds that “the fridge” has had over five decades of production with different drivers, made in different factories and under various parent companies. And obviously “right” is a personal preference and depends on context (and signal chain and player, etc). The thing that most surprised me was the extra efficiency of the smaller Six10 at lower frequencies, so the point that I’d like to see how a Six10 driven by a 100W Ampeg V4 compares to an SVT into 810E. That’s the nice thing about having bigger lows (more efficiency!) and clearer treble can always be mellowed out with the tone knobs on your bass and amp. And then there’s the Barefaced Line Array Crossover helping the dispersion. Obviously I’m somewhat biased but it was nice to hear what (also biased because I employ him) Geoff made of them on first play/listen!

I do agree with everything you’ve stated here Alex about this comparison, it’s purpose, and this video is another great sales tool for BF. However, when I read all of the fanboy comments here about how incredible the clarity, this & that which is superior, it causes me to want to say that “perfection” in sound is not always the musician and record producer seeks. We want “vibe”, and emotional connection between a song and an audience, particularly in recordings. Whatever makes a song communicate its intent to a target audience is perfection, regardless of technical deficiencies. I like the Ampeg when I want to hear the complete Ampeg experience. There is no “better than” other than in technical analysis. I own three cabs. A BF SuperTwin, a Euphonic Audio 210, and an Ampeg 115 LF. They are all wonderful, and I experiment using them with my four heads, three of which are hybrids, and one an all-tube Ampeg B-15 clone. It’s fun to mix and match them, but I always end up with the B-15 plugged into the Ampeg cab. It just sounds more “right” when seeking the 60’s Ampeg tone. For my Genz-Benz Shuttlemax 12.0, both the BF and the Euphonic rule. There are ancient Talkbass comments from you, Alex in which you’ve given your opinion and feedback on non BF cabs. I love reading those because it allows me to see your comments made at a different time in your life, and when BF was in its infancy. I know that you know that there are many fantastic cabs out in the world, Barefaced among them, and that when you remove your salesman hat, you appreciate and admire cabs other than yours, and understand as a musician that perfection in sound quality is largely disconnected with the successes of artists, both in the past and to this day, particularly in rock music.

@@collegeofcool8109 I agree, it's all about the musical goals, and I appreciate that the fridge led the way and made it possible for bassists to keep up with the guitar and the drums and its position in music history cannot be understated. We have a lot of very enthusiastic customers who think that that whatever Barefaced product they own is the best thing ever and we appreciate that - but I'd hope that people realise that we understand musical instrument amplification is a lot more complex than just good vs bad. That's why I always ask people to email us for advice, so we match the player's needs to the right cab. We now make eleven different bass cabs, nine of which can be had with or without tweeters, so that's a huge amount of sonic ground covered. But there are two very important points that I need to clarify - firstly, if you want the SVT+810 tone (I'd say there are two iconic Ampeg tones, the SVT+810 and the B15), you're not going to get that SVT+810 sound from any other Ampeg cab - their 610 sounds different, the 410HE sounds fairly close but can't move anywhere near as much air and the narrow dispersion is more problematic with its lack of height, the 410HLF sounds NOTHING like an 810E, etc. And there have been a lot of Ampeg 810 variants over the years that have diverged from that iconic tone. Something saying "Ampeg" on the front doesn't mean it's going to have "the Ampeg sound". Secondly, if you want the SVT+810 tone, you're playing gigs and you don't have a roadie, then the Six10 makes it possible for you to enjoy gigging with a rig that has a similar vibe (and actually more output). And because the Six10 has better dispersion, you'll hear more of that tone around the room - yes, if you're exactly on-axis then carrying an 810E to the venue will get you closer to the "Ampeg" sound but will it actually do that as well around the stage and the rest of the room? I guess another video to do would be a blind ABC test with SVT+Six10 tweaked to sound like SVT+810E vs modelling amp doing SVT+810E model into BT3. I'm glad you're enjoying your Super Twin - have you tried any of our 10CR cabs? They sound very different to the 12XN models (but they maintain our commitment to more output and better dispersion for better tone in the real world).

I would love to hear a lower power tube amp through the six10. I’m so Pleased to have heard this demo with a tube amp, and a very familiar one at that. The six10 really sounds fantastic! It’s interesting that you mentioned the 810 sounded a bit thicker in person, with the six10 sounding deeper. The six10 sounded deeper and thicker to me, and more detailed obviously.

Yes definitely do it the2x12 retro with the same size of the6x10 would be spectacular. Also it would be nice to have ceramic drivers for the 12inch speaker.. or also a nice 4x12 with diagonal speaker..so tall like a 8x10. Another thing that i ve always wanted to have build is a 12inch version of the of the acoustic408 4X15 i m sure barefaced will be doing way lighter and performing.

Why would you want ceramic drivers for the 12” speaker? The Acoustic 408 is one of those old designs which looks cool but sadly doesn’t make any sonic sense - and once you apply the science we now know it’s obvious why. It’s the same for a lot of cool looking old designs - they date from a time when speaker theory was in its infancy and so they were many more bizarre experimental cabs. The reason they’re not around now is they didn’t work as well as the designs that have lasted! Retro BT3 will happen when we have some spare design capacity… 🤘

hi, I would like a ceramic speaker because when you put a vintage 100 w or 200 w head and the head goes in crunch ..the neo speaker has a harsh ..a bit acid top end contrarywise the ceramic remains more smooth and musical. in regards to the 408, the reason why I suggested is that I really like the tone and the efficiency and sound presence.. but It is bigger than 810 ampeg...you can't fit it anywhere. in a car.i i wondered if someone built one with dimensions s for the 12 speakers. it would have been way more manageable. the BT3is going to be tall like a w BT2 or lower like the 4x10?

@@psychorock83 in that case you’d be much better served by the warmth and fatness of our 10CR speakers. The key is to forget about the speaker diameter because that is really far down the list of parameters that matter when it comes to tone - but pretty EVERYONE thinks it’s the most important thing because it’s the difference that’s really easy to see. Watch some more of our videos for further enlightenment!

hi thanks for your reply.. to me is not a question of look. but I own a 212 Ampeg because I did not really like how the 410 he8 ohm Ampeg sits in the mix so even if I recognize that your 10 in speaker sounds really open almost like 12 I can hear is not 12, another thing that I've noticed that your 610 sounds more open than a 410 which is weird, anyway I should definitely come there with my cab head and bass and do the A B comparison..

if you put a treble compression on an ampeg 810 like I did you will find clarity. The ampegr 810 being a sealed cabinet, you cannot compete with a bass reflex (well studied), that said the sealed cabinets are more dynamic in the low and high mids where ultimately the main spectrum of the bass guitar is located

@@BarefacedAudio I should have said better transient response. I have been playing bass for 45 years and I have had the opportunity to play on quite a few types of cabinets. I have always preferred sealed cabinets, in any case going very low frequencies only brings confusion in the sound and moreover a somewhat serious bassist should always put a high pass filter just after his bass before attacking anything else and especially a compressor far be it from me to criticize your productions which seem top notch.
