The reason you didn't use a resistor for the led is because you only used 1.5v with the transmitter, correct?

The reason the LED didn't burn out, is it wasn't continuously being supplied a current. He was teasing the LED with the emitter. There is a range you can apply to electronics. Heat is the hidden enemy here. In 'most' electronics. More heat = resistance. As well as Resistance = heat. It quickly becomes a run away cycle. Both contributing to each other. The battery or supply, desperately wants to short, and release all it's energy. An LED has so little resistance that the battery sends it everything all at once. The resistor limits that. Without a resistor, your flashlight quickly becomes a portable single use heater.
