I’m working on a bigger project that will involve a lot of ironing. My ironing board simply isn’t big enough and it would be a pain to keep moving everything around. So I decided to make an ironing mat, which turns my table into a big ironing board.
They key to this project is to use a layer of heat reflecting batting, which is made for potholders and such. Then you need some insulation layers and outer layers. These should all be cotton, because other fabrics may not be able to handle the heat.
What you’ll need:
- 0,75 m heat reflecting batting
- 1,5 m cotton batting (or use old towels like I did)
- 1,5 m cotton fabric for the top and bottom (0,75 m each)
- 5 m bias tape
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Fabric scissors
If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it! Send me a picture on Instagram @craftswithellen.

I have been looking for this video for a while now, thank you so much, there are hardly any others on YOU TUBE! WOW, this was made 6 years ago? There must not be very many people who sew their own things out there, I find that hard to believe. I loved how you put your own labels on your projects, very cool and loved the bias tape tutorial as well. Awesome job. ❤❤❤❤❤👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you, what a brilliant tutorial. I've just finished mine. It's shocking how much the different fabrics stretch. I forgot to do the binding your way and tried to sew front and back at same time - what a disaster. I unpicked it all and did it again. I'm really pleased with my mat but have learnt many lessons if making another one.

Yes. Exactly what I was looking for! I have the same heat reflective batting, and I was wondering if I could use it to make a nice big ironing pad. This is perfect! Thank you!

I don't have bias tape; I will make one of the external layers bigger and fold that over as a finish.

Great tutorial! Thanks for taking the time to create, record, and share the posted video. Definitely very insightful. I actually need a small portable ironing pad but I love how you made yours and my biggest concern were the layers to use which you answered for me. I'm ready to use your idea on a smaller scale that I know will work for me. Thank you again!

Great beginner project. I was not able to get standard binding tape around the edges of 5 layers of fabric. I used 1 1/2" satin ribbon instead. It was still very hard to keep it even when sewing it closed.
@nohomo4774
@nohomo4774 Жыл бұрын
hello, is that satin ribbon made of silk? otherwise I think putting the iron over that might melt it

I'm a beginner with a sewing machine and i'm wondering wich needle and thread do you use to sew up this thickness ??
@CraftsWithEllen
@CraftsWithEllen 6 жыл бұрын
+Jul's Workshop I tend to use a jeans/denim needle whenever I've got something thick like this. They're stronger and very sharp. Sizewise I usually stick to an 80 or 90 for most projects. In terms of thread, I always use polyester. Never failed on me yet :)

This is exactly what I was looking for. I am making a large ironing pad for my Sullivan hobby table. Thank you for sharing your video and for showing the correct order of laying out the fabrics. When I quilt the fabrics together should I use 100% cotton thread or is a cotton/polyester blend ok?
@bobbiesparks3379
@bobbiesparks3379 2 жыл бұрын
Because you will be using heat, you should use 100% cotton thread. Cotton/polyester could melt or soften.

Nice tutorial! Where did you get your labels? Have you made or seen a wool felted pressing pad instruction video? Thx
@CraftsWithEllen
@CraftsWithEllen 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I ordered the labels online. They're sold as labels for kids clothes, so that's a good place to start googling. Haven't made or come across a woolfelted pressing pad video though.

Exactly, you can make it as big or small as you want. I'm thinking of making a very small one that I can have on the table all the time for quick pressing etc. Thanks David!

Will this mat work on a foldable plastic table?

It blocks the heat pretty well, so I'm guessing it would be okay. Just try not to iron in the same spot all the time :)
