In honor of Old Fashioned week, I try my hand at a classic Old Fashioned with an SLB twist, and I also make an SLB honey Old Fashioned.
Regular old fashioned recipe:
-----------------------------------------------
3-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
2 oz. Woodford Reserve Double Oak Bourbon
.5 oz Simple Syrup
Honey Old Fashioned Recipe:
-----------------------------------------------
3-4 dashes of Orange Bitters
2 oz. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit Bourbon
.5 oz Bärenjäger Honey Liqueur
.5 oz Honey Syrup

It is also nice to make an original Old Fashioned with a dash of soda to cut the sweetness of the simple syrup. Excellent!

That basic old fashioned recipe is my go-to drink. The only thing I do differently is to use a quality maple syrup as the sweetener. I may get some backlash for doing that, but I suggest that every old fashioned lover should try that at least once before passing judgement. Cheers!

Kurt, I just discovered your KZfaq site. Congrats! As a 75 yr young bourbon and Old Fashion lover, I have to say that over the years I have had very inconsistent experience with bartenders who truly know how to make an excellent Old Fashion. In all honesty, the very best I have ever had was at the bar of the prestigious Detroit Athletic Club (DAC). And since I was a guest, not a member, my dinner invitations are few and far between. In all honesty, I make a lousy one myself! But I look forward to putting your instructions to work. Thanks, Kurt.

@Jeremy Albin i use pure maple syrup in mine as well sometimes instead. and diff bitters brands depending on what whiskey im using. I find the maple syrup goes awesome with a high proof rye. As well as orange and reg bitters. 2 dashes of each…Really rounds out the flavors and balances them well and takes away a little of the harshness and spicy rye note. I like 1 bada bing brand cherry as well in mine just because they are so delicious to have after lol

That being said, I’d say a half ounce of simple syrup is a little much for an old fashioned. 1/4 ounce is plenty. The double oak is sweet enough on its own. I make mine with the first method. One thing I appreciate about stirring it first with ice is when I pour it over the large ice cube I make is that it doesn't crack the ice curb since the liquid is already cold. Pour all that in without icing it down first and you get cracks. Appearance, to me, is just as important as taste. :)

Great video! Really have been enjoying your content lately. One quick tip for cocktails: you typically want to pour in your ingredients from least-to-most-expensive in case you mess it up. If you add way too much lemon juice at the end, you have to throw out some of your fine liquor; if you mess that cheap ingredient up at the beginning, no liquor is lost! Cheers!

Also comes down to the proff of the whiskey. A low proff (under 90) a teaspoon of syrup is good, A 100+ proff 1/4oz or more may be needed to balance it out.

Nice Old Fashioned Recipe. No muddled fruit is good. No cherry. No mashed cherry is better, so your drink doesn't turn pale pink. Put the orange in last - this is good. Keeps the drink pure. The one thing about the bitters and sugar cube as compared to the simple syrup is that the drink changes as you enjoy the drink over time. Whiskey Choice: You might try making the Old Fashioned with Makers Mark. Instead of sugar or simple syrup, I like a couple of bar spoons of Benedictine - its sweet so ya don't need much. Yes this is technically a Monte Carlo. I got this idea from a neighborhood tavern that used the Benedictine in their Old Fashioned's.

I like your Old Fashion recipe, it's almost identical to mine. No sugar cubes, simple syrup is best. One thing I like to do differently, because it's an "orange flavor" cocktail, is use Angostura Orange Bitters instead of the standard Aromatic Bitters. It gives a nice orange flavor enhancement.
@slbdrinks
@slbdrinks 2 жыл бұрын
Ya I am not a fan of the sugar cube because of the grit in the granules. If you let it sit long enough the grit will dissolve but by than the cocktail is watered down. IMO

I can say confidently that Angustura is the king of bitters. However, their orange bitters are very overpowering and make everything you use it with taste like “orange tictacs” if you’re going for that flavor so be it but I like to use Fee Brothers or Regans behind the bar. I feel the flavor of those compliment the whiskey and dont overwhelm the cocktail. Just my humble opinion. Cheers!

Thank you (and your wife) for your nicely done KZfaq channel. We seem to be well aligned in our tastes when it comes to Bourbon, although my high limit is about $70 for a bottle and I do a lot of careful research before spending anything over $30. I am a 90% Bourbon drinker and 90% of that is neat. The only cocktail I mix regularly is a sugar-free Old Fashioned, since like a lot of men my age I need to manage my A1C. If you know anyone with Diabetes that also loves Bourbon here is my recipe: 4 oz good high-proof Bourbon (OGD 114 and Makers 46 Cask Strength work very well. It is a good way to use up the overly wooded Makers 46 Cask Strength) 2 Tbsp. Torani Sugar-Free Syrup 1 Tbsp. Water 1 Tsp. Orange Bitters (Angostura is OK but Fee Brothers is better) 1 Orange Peel Ice Cheers.

Could you make a sugar-free syrup with stevia? I never thought of using a sugar-free syrup in a cocktail, since I usually drink bourbon/whiskey neat or on the rocks. How does the Torani SF taste?

@@charitysteveboisseau5989 Stevia has a weird taste for me and would not be suitable. I think the torani syrup is as close to real simple syrup as you can find.

I actually have some of the Bird Dog flavored Whiskeys and enjoy! I am not a whiskey snob whatsoever. I use some of the BD options as ingredients for different cocktails.

Hi Kurt, I’m learning to appreciate the Old Fashioned through your site. Regarding your bourbon choices, I believe you mentioned Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel 110 proof as your favorite for this cocktail. One time you said you regretted an expensive bourbon because the over-oaked flavor was offensive. But the double-oaked Woodford Reserve is not too oaky for you? Is Woodford Reserve Double Oak your second favorite choice for the Old Fashioned? If not would you mind sharing your second and third place bourbon choices? Thanks. Really enjoy your site!
@slbdrinks
@slbdrinks 2 жыл бұрын
The Woodford video was one of the first but I still do like it. I think the key is finding a 20 something dollar bourbon you can use for old fashions that won’t continue to break the bank. I love Russell’s Reserve but at the 60.00 price point it’s a spoil me moment lol. Lately I have been using rye whiskeys like Wild Turkey 101 rye. I like the way the Demerara sweetens the rye. Also, try a higher rye mash bill bourbon like old grandad 100 bonded. I think that mindset has been my favorite as of late.

If I may give a few pieces of advice to the aspiring bartenders. The first recipe is spot on but when working in a bar, we always build the drinks with the cheapest ingredients first in case you make an error and have to throw it away. We also mount our hand at the base of the mixing glass so as not to heat it up. It looked like a very tasty old fashioned. Edit: 1/4oz of simple is good, half ounce is too much for most people.
