i needed control knobs on the globe amp,(kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLiYfdRo19LDon0.html) so i made them like this. it was so easy and gratifying, i made a separate instructional video on the knobs for y'all. join me in the knob revolution!
be good,
tim

I am going to buy an antique floor model radio this weekend. Doesnt have original knobs. I am going to make some wood ones. Plan to buy wood cabinet knobs from hardware store and modify them using a similar method you are using. Plus will stain them. I am not paying ebay prices!!!!!!

I’m trying this currently! A friend of mine gave me a squire strat and I’m tired of the plastic knobs on it with the stupid *numbers* and I saw this in my recommended and was like “why have I not thought of this* and off I went! Got a price of scrap mahogany and tried using a hole bit, didn’t work lol mahogany is some hard ass wood so I traced a circle on it and used a jigsaw and cut off the excess wood and I’m now using a sander to get the little amount left lol can’t wait to see the finished product knob 1 of 3 is almost done, my friend that i mentioned also gave me a fender kingsmen acoustic/ electric! I hope he like the custom knobs I made because if it wasnt for him I wouldn’t even be able to play smoke on the water 😂

That's so weird! I was literally thinking to myself the same process before I watched this video! As far as using a holesaw with the bit, make a starter cut and pulling the bit out so that way there isn't a hole in the center! Great video man!

+Barry's Workshop ha! that quote goes waaayyyy back. it's an inside joke. i said that to a fellow musician like 8 years ago who was asking me advice on repairing his guitar. i have like a dozen short videos of me taking drill presses to guitars on facebook. every time i do it, i send him a vid ;-)

I used a similar process to make knobs but I laminated a thin layer of wenge on top of walnut then planed the board down to the thickness I needed. I then clamped the board onto the drill press and drilled the hole for the pot shaft then I used a forstner bit to recess the center of knob down so that it would slide down on the shaft enough to cover the nut on the pot. Then I used the hole saw with the pilot bit removed to cut the knob free from the board. Worked great and the two tone knobs give my hand built bass guitar a little extra custom touch.

Nice tips again Mr Sway. I bought a load of carnauba wax flakes a few years back and for the life of me, I can't remember why. something to do with epoxy I think, but any chance you'd share your recipe?
@timsway
@timsway 8 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't remember! I think melted it down with some orange extract (oil?). you're better off searching instructables or something like that over asking me. that's what I'm gonna do this fall for a recipe to use with beeswax.

For guitar knobs they usually have some sort of insert or set screw. Would this type be ok to grip the pots properly and not be so tight that you risk splitting the wood while attaching them? I have some materials I plan to do this with using a drill press. Thanks for the demo vid :)
@timsway
@timsway 6 жыл бұрын
Some knobs have the threaded inset screw, some are pressure fit. Typically the pressure-fit pot shafts are split so the knob squeezes it a little as it goes on. they sell those little hex-key screws at box stores. you could absolutely drill a small hole and put one in. it'll thread itself if you carefully screw it in. I've done it on aluminum.
@Groosome128
@Groosome128 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I have split shaft pots and prefer without the set screw but they're push pull so I'm hoping to make something that won't pull off every other time I pull the knob up :) I want to knurl them for grip too but haven't thought of how I can do it yet.

Groosome128 i don't know how expensive the tool is if it's even viable, but you could use it vertically on your drill. It's just two wheels with bumps, almost like a can opener

+My Garage Woodshop cool! yes, the wires twist up - especially when you let a 5-year-old play with it. i left the wires like 3 feet long so they have room to tangle and just try to spin it the other direction every once in a while ;-)

what drill bit size did you use to make the shaft hole?
@timsway
@timsway 8 жыл бұрын
oh geez, I don't remember. 9/32"?? i measured the pot with digital calipers and went just slightly smaller. if you don't have calipers, eyeball it then drill holes in scrap to find the best fit first. or shoot me a reminder tweet or something next week when I'm at the shop and I'l measure one.
@Jack68676
@Jack68676 8 жыл бұрын
+tim sway I've tried doing this before on scrap wood. The hole I drilled was just too big as to fit the shaft but loosely so that it didn't serve it's purpose

Jack J I hear you. you could also put a set screw in to the side of the knob, like some metal guitar knobs have. I've bought those little allen-key screws at the box store.
