Take your wood flags to the next level using stains and dyed epoxy. Follow along as we go step by step through a few different designs and techniques. I use these techniques on my cnc and conventional wooden flags. This video covers staining, using spray paints, using the torch, making keyholes to hang your flags, and using dyed epoxy to make them extra special. All of the cnc flags were designed in Carbide Create and made in the Shapeoko XXL.

I’d respectfully disagree, at least it’s not my opinion. 🙂 I love hand crafted stuff that is full of the creator’s artistry. I also find a wide variety of tools helps the artist execute their vision. But I totally get the opinion. There’s something alluring and romantic about the effort and skill it takes to tease out a work with rudimentary tools. And super wish I had a sweet CNC. 😀 Keep up the good work Chris , and thanks for posting.

CNC machines pay for themselves very quickly. With the multitude of sub $2000 cnc machines, “I can’t afford a cnc” is no longer a valid argument. If you’re serious about running a business, you can’t afford not to have one.

Ken,. Why would you say that? CNC is just another tool in the shop. It takes skill to run a CNC router. Are you still using a manual typewriter? Do you use a spell checker or a paper-based dictionary? Different strokes for different folks.
@kensmith2822

Relying on a computer to do the work for you takes the skill out. It's like having a self driving car and calling yourself a great driver
@ChrisPowellFSD
@ChrisPowellFSD 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it’s nothing like that. It would be just like having a self driving car, if you first put the car together, then designed the path the car would go, then programmed all of the speeds the car would go along that route, then installed the proper tires on the car for the trip and changed them when it came to different road conditions. Not to mention, no one using a cnc machine claims to be an expert woodworker. We’re not going to be able to have an intelligent discussion about this because it’s quite clear that you aren’t familiar with how cnc machines actually work.
@HueyF
@HueyF 5 жыл бұрын

Amazing work, love your videos. I'm currently making everything by hand saving up to purchase a Shapeoko. I'm making a thin blue line flag for a charity auction and wanted to use epoxy for it. Are you just using epoxy from your local hardware store? Thanks for all you do!

Chris- I see that you don't wipe the stain off after applying it. Do you have any issues with the stain penetrating too deep for the areas that gets carved after staining? Thx
@ChrisPowellFSD
@ChrisPowellFSD 4 жыл бұрын
I just try to be careful not to let any pool up. Otherwise it gets uneven and doesn’t burn as nicely. I don’t really notice that it penetrates that deep at all.

Chris, love your videos, I've learned a ton from them. I'm curious at the end of this video you heat a stripe with the torch and the blue paint turns very shiny. Is that paint or some other product that melts and turns shiny. when heated.?

What size shapeoko do you have, I'm thinking about getting the shapeoko 4 when they go sale, as a beginner and not going to be making large items, would you get the cheapest cost shapeoko 3 or spend the extra and get the 4. Thank you and awesome videos

It’s the xxl. 32x32” I guess I’d have to see what the cost difference was. The Pro has some nice features, but it looks like there’s a little bit of a wait to actually get one.
