How to make Brackish Water? I had to learn this weekly over the past with when I was sold a Green Spotted Puffer Fish as Freshwater fish! In this video I show how to make Brackish Water. I was specifically going for a Salinity of 1.014. Of course when making Brackish water yourself you have to use the correct about Salt needed for the Salinity level you are going for. Research what Salinity level you need for your Brackish fish and use the correct amount.

I’ve kept them for years…. They’ll do fine on the very lowest level brackish, technically not even brackish, for years…. Like 1-2 tablespoons of salt per 10 gallons. They just need a tiny bit of hardness to thrive…. Nice fish, they’re already pretty big, I love puffers too, so much personality.

Did they stay active and grow well?? And, how many years, so far? I have heard that they may only live one to three years in fresh. And, ten years in strong brackish. Mine are in weak brackish, 3 tablespoons per five gallons.. Probably two years old, just now.. Am wondering if I am going to cause kidney problems. Am interested in your experiences, thanks!

@@bubblerings maybe 3 years tops before I sell them , too big, like 3” inches and fat. My water (Toronto) is already pretty hard mineral like 175ppm 7.5ph with lots of calcium and magnesium, plus the little bit of salt I mentioned. I also use a few pieces of dead coral to add minerals. They were very healthy when I sold them. I feed frozen blood worm, frozen krill, live snails and put live ghost shrimp in the tank. I also added a Java fern plant, and seagrass, which tolerates low brackish, I have kept them full marine too before, that’s another time.

Yes they were active and grew well, when they are sick they don’t eat, turn black and then eventually die.

My favorite pet shop had these green spotted puffer fish. I never seen these cute fish. So i ask the lady at the pet store. How you take care of these. You know what she told me. Lol. She told me. They are fresh water fish and eat fish food. So i trusted her. So when i got home. I put the green spotted puffer fish in my 30 gallon. I also have a 55 gallon but its got a turtle in there. So i wanted to look these guys up. I got upset. Bc the lady i trusted told me the wrong thing to take care of them. So now im in the Process of getting stuff for this little guy. So now i got to learn how to take care of a saltwater aquarium lol. When it gets bigger. And i will have to get another big tank. 😆.. but the green spotted puffer fish is so cute!!! I fed mine cut up Oysters last night. Lol. I like your videos. 😀

You can't put them in a saltwater aquarium. They are freshwater fish when they are juveniles, but they need brackish water when they become adults. Brackish water has a very small amount of salt, it's a mixture of fresh and salt water. Do not put that puffer fish into a complete saltwater tank because it will die. Just do some research on how to make the tank brackish, it's very easy and easier than salt water.
@mattparish4451

Also you don't need to put it into a brackish tank until it's adult, and even then it will do okay and freshwater but it's just better brackish. Don't rush yourself just do it right.

Neat video. Was very helpful. I don't have a brackish tank but I think it would be cool to have one in the far future with gobies. I'll probably test it out with mollies first. Not sure if I'll get around to a small puffer. I would like to do a father fish method but salt makes it tricky with plants. Turns out there are a few plants that can handle brackish, but you have to watch the numbers, so you'd have to make sure the fish and plants match. Too bad there isn't easier information to find for live plants in brackish or even marine water. Lucky if you live near those bodies of water and can collect some of the plants.

FYI you want to set the salt levels lower than "official" brackish water. Euryhaline fish can handle 100% fresh or 100% salt water. they prfer salty water on the fresher side, just a few 0.01's below brackish.
@Shaden0040
@Shaden0040 2 жыл бұрын
You want1.004 lower than actual brackish level. Vary it from saltier to fresher as they can and do handle greater changesthan this twice daily due to tidal action.

I purchased my Green spotted as a fresh water also. At what point do I start turning the water into brackish water? Is it possible to start to early? (I only have fresh water tanks) Thanks in advance

What I did is I started making brackish water and once a week when I did a water change I would change water with brackish water. It would mix with the existing water and slowly start to bring them to Brackish water. Takes like 3 water changes before they are fully in brackish water. At this point I have my Green spotted puffers acclimated to full salt.

They live in fresh as well but for a very happy and longer life you should go brackish your puffer will be healthier and happier and live longer use instant ocean and its a half cup for every 5 gallons roughly its that simple got a salinity tester to make life easy and keep water consensus its that simple with puffers its all about water quality not so much about that salty ness brackish water verys from tide in or out so the salt can very a but as long as there is some in tank you will do fine focus more on the water quality for puffers no scales so there more prone to ick and bacteria its a cool fish to have and enjoy if you dont want to go brackish try pea puffers tiny fish can be in full freshwater and they have big attitudes for tiny little fish they dont know there small i have a few and they think there a big fish fun to watch good luck

How much salt per gallon do you think I should add to get my water to 1.005
@fishtankdave7709
@fishtankdave7709 4 жыл бұрын
Would have to do alittle bit of testing to find that exact amount needed. Since 1 cup of Instant ocean is 1.014 I'd probably use half a cup of marine salt and see where that ends up at, and test salinity with a hydrometer or spectrometer. Sorry wish I had a better answer for you.

Jungle vallesnaria (probably misspelled that). You have to check the ppt that it can handle though. Not sure if it can work with puffers. Also, it grows slower in brackish water vs fresh and the substrate has to be rich for it to survive the brackish conditions. I want a father fish tank that is brackish one day. A lot of research and hands on experience ahead of me.

Green puffer fish. How much TDS ratio needed
@fishtankdave7709
@fishtankdave7709 3 жыл бұрын
I'm using very low TDS water from filtered RO water and then mixing with instant ocean. After the water is mixed the TDS is gonna be something insanely high because of salt as it adds to the number. So TDS in general for brackish and saltwater is not a good gauge to be going by. TDS in my saltwater tank is like 2-3k which at that point the number is unhelpful.

Start with freshwater, if that is what you bought them in.. Then, raise salinity up to 4 points.. each water change, weekly or whenever you change water. (to 1.004, etc) He is stopping at 1.014. I believe that is a decent low end of salinity, where you find these puffers in nature. "BeFishy" actually shows where she caught some.. The salinity can be even stronger than 1.014... They like that. (Seawater can be as strong as 1.026 or a few points less.)
