Check out my new book that you can pre-order now. Simplify Vegetable Gardening will be available on 16th Feb 2024. Pre-order now to be the first to get a copy of this book that has all my personal tips. geni.us/SimplifyVegGardening Making your own organic plant food means you can take control of your garden. Comfrey is an Organic fertilizer and mineral accumulator. I have made this video called organic plant food - free best organic plant fertilizer in order to show you the benefits of not only growing Comfrey but also making Comfrey tea. Comfrey Tea is packed with nutrients and minerals as this plant draws them up from the depths of the soil that most plants just can not reach.
To make the best organic plant food you need a variety of Comfrey called Bocking 14, this variety is sterile and can not become an issue as Comfrey can become invasive. As Bocking 14 is sterile it can only be propagated by root division making it a perfect plant to make organic plant food from. Comfrey tea is free to make and is perfect to use at the flowering and fruiting part of a plants life. It boosts the immune system of the plant at what is a very stressful time, It provides it with the minerals needed to produce great looking flowers and fruits. Taking control of your garden by making your own organic plant food means that you are not putting chemicals into your soil and contaminating your ground killing all the good bacteria and soil web life that we as gardeners work so hard to build up.
Comfrey, The Bocking 14 variety can be used in other ways, it can be used as the best organic fertilizer just by adding the leaves to the bottom of trenches and burying them to rot down where they will release their vital nutrients and minerals. In this episode of Organic Plant Food - Free Best Organic Plant Fertilizer I show you two methods of making Comfrey Tea and Comfrey concentrate, this means that it is easy to store and can be easily watered down to the correct strength later when required.
Comfrey Organic Plant food can also be used to activate an Organic compost pile, Instead of using water for the moisture you could use a comfrey tea, this will add nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to the compost, greatly boosting the content of the compost and giving the bacteria what it requires to produce a better overall organic compost.
All this comes from a miracle organic plant food. Comfrey, in my opinion, is the free best organic plant fertilizer for your garden. Watch the video Organic Plant Food - Free Best Organic Plant Fertilizer now to see exactly how to do it and I have a bonus build within the video to show you how to build your very own Comfrey tea pipe which will help you get the best organic plant food ever.

another great video, just found the channel and have been watching a lot of your videos. i have been aware for years about nettle and comfrey tea as fertiliser, but the pipe is a ne one on me, so my question is? would the pipe work with nettle too is are the leaves too dry?

When I had an allotment plot I planted quite a few comfrey plants along one plot boundary. This was for myself and plot neighbour to use as and when. It didn't run riot as it was a variety named "Bocking 14". It being sterile and not prone to root creep makes it ideal for us gardeners. I used chopped leaves in my potato trenches and shredded loads of it into small barrels to decompose, both aerobically and anaerobically. Brilliant stuff. Just a tiny garden now so only a couple of plants.

To make my comfrey liquid I use a small rain butt with a tap and a tight fitting lid to keep the insects out. It holds an amazing amount of fresh comfrey. As the comfrey disintegrates, it turns into a rich brown liquid which can be drawn off via the tap. It is quite a lot stronger than comfrey tea made in a bucket with water. For seedlings and young vegetables, I usually add a cup of comfrey liquid to a full watering can. As the plants grow bigger I add two cups of comfrey.

I have a 5 gallon food grade bucket with a spigot on the bottom to make Comfrey Tea. I put a mesh screen on the bottom of the bucket with it bent up over the spigot, then fill the bucket with Comfrey leaves and water to brew. Periodically I take 3 cups of the liquid out of the spigot to add to the watering to fertilize the vegetables. I can add more water to the bucket and keep the tea brewing for some time.

2 years after the above comment was posted, but in case anyone has just come across it, like me, here’s a warning. It has been scientifically confirmed that comfrey is dangerous if ingested. “ it has toxic substances called pyrrolizidine alkaloids that damage the liver and can lead to death. Comfrey is no longer sold in the U.S., except in creams or ointments. The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Germany also have banned the sale of oral products containing comfrey.”

My comfrey pipe is inside the greenhouse. I think the extra warmth may speed up the decomposition of the leaves, though I have occasionally had to add a sprinkling of water to encourage it. The chap who introduced me to the system called it a space ship, so that is how I always refer to it! I have always tried to allow flowering, but remove the old flowers before they seed, as it was in situ before I got the plot and I doubt it is sterile.

Thats a very smart move Pam. I dont keep it inside only because it can smell and in warmer weather can attract fruit flies. outside you wont even notice them.

I saw one video where this gardener make what he called Comfrey cake. It was black so I assume it was rotted Comfrey from the pipe. He kept some damp and mulch-like - and dried some to add it to other plants/amendments/ potions.

I like the pipe idea, is the pipe black to get more heat? I have another way that I thought of, collected a large handful of comfrey leaf, put some water in my blender, added leaves and blended until thick, added more water and leaves, repeated blending, etc until no more leaves fit in. This makes an instant concentrated plant and compost bin accelerator juice.

Thanks for the informative video. I’m growing comfrey in our courtyard and chopping the leaves twice a week to dry and make into oil infusions. I have so much though with just four plants that I’d like to make some fertiliser. How long should I leave it in the bucket with water? Should I keep adding leaves?
@simplifygardening

It takes around 4 to 6 weeks for it to steep in water. possibly set up a tank where you don't use water fill with leaves and weigh down and collect the resulting juice just like the comfrey pipe. This is more concentrated and you can keep adding leaves to that all year long

Like your site. Unfortunately I don't have the infertile variety and mine has taken over an area of my garden. The only way I can contain it sort of is to cut it to the ground @3 times a season so that it doesn't go to seed. I attempted composting it in black plastic bags but that very wasn't successful so since I am building real bins from pallets, plan to use it as green compost there. I plan to chop it up or at least cut into sections to help it break down faster. I am hoping that since you say the plant is rich in nutrients leading you to use it for tea, it will break down into the same components? Do you have any advice or comments re this idea?

A neat and tidy design for the comfrey pipe. When doing a project using parts that you can purchase....how about giving a rough cost estimate as well? Nice one mate 👍🏻😀
@simplifygardening
@simplifygardening 5 жыл бұрын
I had the pipe here mate, the rubber reducer was £7.49 which had the jubilee clips on it, the plastic plant pot was 95p and the cap was also £6.50 so the whole pipe cost me about £15 there are cheaper alternatives though, the cap could be just a plain cap at around £3 and a plastic reducer would have been about £3 too hope that helps

I recently started up a vermicomposter, and will be building a Black Soldier Fly compost bin this weekend. With the comfrey, is it better to let the leaves break down by themselves, or will using red wigglers/other compost worms, aid in the release of the beneficial "tea" more quickly?

My wife is going to be laughing at all my composting stations around the yard. I've started looking into the possibility of utilizing superworms (Zophobas morio) larvae to break down styrofoam rubbish into usable feed for my red wigglers to break down further into usable compost. It will be quite an interesting experiment once I start it up.

Music was too cheesy mate but some good tips there. Comfrey is great to plant in different parts of the garden whether it becomes a weed or not as you simply chop and drop. Great mulch and the worms just pull it down at night. Best to put it in the compost bins though as mulching with leaves on soil encourages slugs and snails.
