Complete description of how to make comfrey tea. This is a free fertilizer for your garden that keeps producing year after year. Comfrey is a great plant for most gardens and makes a wonderful mulch in addition to being an incredible liquid fertilizer. The deep roots of comfrey pull many nutrients and minerals from the soil and accumulates them in its leaves. When those leaves are allowed to steep and decompose in a bucket of water, the resulting liquid (comfrey tea) is loaded with nutrients and minerals that can be passed on to the other plants in your garden.

I have a honey locust tree that was suffering from chipmunks possibly chewing on the roots, burrowing in and around the tree. I wanted to get rid of the chipmunks and the comfrey tea smelled so horrible I thought that would do the trick if I poured it down their entry holes at the top of the incline. Lo and behold the chipmunks' tunnels provided a way to get the comfrey liquid fertilizer to the roots of the tree and it revitalized the tree and dissuaded the chipmunks. Win win+

I've used comfrey tea for years. I also chop and drop it as mulch. I use Russian Bocking 14 with an NPK of 1.8-0.5-7.0. I brew it in a 32 gallon black garbage can. Let it sit for 3 months to a year. I don't strain it, I just take the sprinkler off the can so I don't clog up the cans. I also use fermented plant juice made from comfrey which I foliar spray. I use only 1/4 teaspoon for 5 gallons. It's very powerful stuff. I also make lacto microorganisms which is also fermented. I combine it with the fermented plant juice and spray it every two weeks. It works pretty well. The only other addition I use for supplemental fertilization is some fast acting bone meal . I will use it when I start to see flowers forming on my tomatoes and peppers. Love it! Blessings to you. This was a wonderful video.

The other great thing about this perennial is that towards the fall you can take a flat spade , and slice the plant right down the middle and transplant the root somewhere else in your garden, leaving the original to carry on as before.

If you don't mind, what does it smell like exactly? Rotten carcasses (which is really stinky IMO), sewage, vegetables food scrap left for weeks (which is actually not that bad, with a sour smell) and regular non-meat compost (which just smells like soil)? Asking because I want to be sure if my family can handle (of course we will keep it outside with a lid).

I’ve read it’s beneficial to place comfrey leaves at the bottom of the hole before planting potatoes. I’ve also read that comfrey leaves can be dried and dug into the soil of plants in early spring while waiting for the plants to wake up and grow fresh leaves. Prince Charles’s gardening team brew huge vats of comfrey compost tea as the main fertilizer for the gardens at his Highgrove country side home.

While making grilled cheese sandwiches for my family. I burned my thumb very badly. I ran to my yard to get a chunk of aloe Vera. It took away the hurt. A large blister formed. I use comfrey salve on my knees and shoulders. The salve ended up on my burn and today after 2 days the burn is healed completely. 🙏🏻

I keep a small container of comfrey salve in my fridge. Whenever I get a burn I immediately put the salve on it. In just a few minutes the burn is completely gone. I gave quite a lot to a friend who had cancer. She used it for every ache and pain, sore, bruise, chaff, burn, bite...and called it the "miracle salve". It also helped relieve her pain as she suffered the last days of her illness. I used it on two goats that suffered large and deep lascerations. I thought I would lose both of them. They healed so quickly I was in total disbelief! I was involved in a car crash in which I suffered many wounds including a totally shattered ankle, splintered bones and much pain. Consuming common mallow and mullein tincture helped to realign the bones that were effected (God had most to do with it!). When the doctor put the cast on I asked him if I could slather my leg and foot with comfrey. He had never seen a healing take place so fast. I walk normally today and without pain - even before storms! My younger Brother had stomach ailments since infancy. When he was in his teens my oldest Brother (I'm blessed with nine of them) told him to eat two comfrey leaves a day. In just a few weeks his stomach ailments ceased. That was over fifty years ago. He hasn't had comfrey since, nor has he had stomach ailments. This really is the "miracle plant". It's true the FDA has outlawed it for consumption in meds. I wonder if it's because it keeps people from pharmaceuticals that are much worse!

I'm SO CONFUSED!!! I've seen videos that say you should NEVER "steep" the mix longer than 48 hrs, or that you need to aerate it, otherwise it will go TOXIC!! I have trusted Gardener Scott for years, so I guess I'll just keep following HIS advice!!!
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
Aerating encourages aerobic bacteria when making a "tea". Though we call it tea, this process is actually making an extract of the nutrients as it steeps. Anaerobic bacteria break it down and can be a problem when mixed with aerobic soil bacteria, but diluting the aged extract with water before using helps reduce that concern.

Thank you for taking the time to make an interesting video! I use the ‘dry’ method of making Comfrey liquid fertiliser which has the advantage of not having a bad smell and I think less work - here is how I do it: Comfrey Fertiliser I grow the Bocking 14 Russian comfrey variety in a 6x4 metre (18x12 feet) plot. I use it as a fertiliser source both in solid and liquid form. In the solid form, cut and gather the leaves and stalks from about 50mm (2 inches) above ground level - the plant will grow back again very quickly. Place the leaves and stalks at the bottom of say, the potato trench, tread down and cover with about 25mm (1 inch) of soil before placing the seed potatoes on top. To make the concentrated liquid form that does not smell when producing, use a plastic dustbin with a lid. Drill a 6mm (1/4 inch) drain hole in the bottom centre of the bin. Scrunch up some chicken wire and place in the bottom of the bin to prevent the drain hole from being blocked. Place the bin on a stand so that a 5 litre clear or opaque plastic container can be placed underneath the drain hole. A small filler funnel in the top of the container better catches the drips of concentrate. Fill the bin completely with the comfrey leaves and stalks, press down and place a flat stone on top to compress the leaves. DO NOT ADD ANY WATER! Put the lid on the bin. After about 14 days (here in the UK), a brown liquid concentrate will begin to drip from the drain hole into the container. Using a clear or opaque container lets you see when the container is getting full and needs to be replaced. Add more comfrey leaves and stalks to the top of the bin as the level drops to keep the process going for as long as required. Dilute the concentrate about 1 to 40 (I use 100cc concentrate to 4.5 litre water) into a watering can. Use this as a liquid feed for all your plants and vegetables about once a fortnight. Store the sealed concentrate in a cool, dark place and it will keep for at least 2 years. For further old-school info on organic gardening, read Lawrence D Hills book “Grow Your Own Fruit and Vegetables”. This was written at the time of the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA) which has now evolved into ‘Garden Organic’. Website link is: www.gardenorganic.org.uk

Thank you for your videos. They are clear, concise and informative. They are very helpful. Regarding comfrey, I planted a half dozen around the yard in the late spring, and harvested from each plant by mid summer. They are not the sizable plants in your video though, but give them time. I was told (by the seller) that you can harvest almost all the leaves, and it will come back strong. I was also told that they will continue to grow where you plant them regardless or what you do to them. I want to propagate them this summer, and start some plants in other parts of my orchard and yard. Do you have any experience doing this? I live in a dry climate (13” per year), and at 7200 feet… similar to what I understand you grow in. I think a video of the propagation would be awesome!! Thanks for all the information you freely share. You’re amazing…

Thanks for the suggestion. I am planning a comfrey propagation video but it probably won't be ready until mid-summer or later. I've propagated it many times and found that root cuttings are an easy way to do it. Dig around the plant, cut off some of the roots that are about the thickness of a pencil or bigger, and put them about half an inch deep in pots with potting soil. Let the plants grow and transplant when they are 6-8 inches tall. All of the comfrey I'm growing in my garden were done this way.

Scott, thanks for the video! We have some beautiful comfrey growing in several places around our market garden. I'm starting my first batch of tea in a few minutes. My question to you: Would you use the same dilution ratio for adding to new/young seedlings? Our Fall crop seedlings will be ready for first feeding before too long and I don't want to burn them. I've read in some places where people suggest 15:1 water:tea but I'm not sure if they made their tea the same way you made yours. Thanks!!

I would dilute by half for seedlings. Rather than a 10:1 for plants, 20:1 for seedlings. A ratio of 15:1 would probably be okay, but I tend to be a little conservative with fertilizers.

Hi Scott, I have learned so much from your videos! I have a question related to using comfrey tea to prepare a garden bed. I will be preparing a new garden patch in my yard later this summer and thought I'd plant a cover crop to improve the soil. Anyway, in the spring, I have to chop the cover crop and wait 2 weeks before planting. Would there be any benefit to adding some comfrey tea to the bed, either at the point when I chop up the cover crop or after the 2 weeks/just before planting? Or, even without a cover crop, is there any benefit to adding to a garden bed before adding seedlings?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 жыл бұрын
The tea works best for plants in place. I use the leaves as a mulch on beds I'll plant in soon. They can be mixed with the cover crop when you chop it and will add nutrients to the soil.

Old Grizzly If you have plants you want pollinating in the garden, make sure you cut back your comfrey before it flowers. Bees will go for comfrey by preference and will often ignore other plants. I have 40 gallon covered barrels with just some scrunched up chicken wire mesh for drainage and a spigot at the bottom. Rough chop the comfrey and ram it tight into the drum ... do not add water ! ..... if this left in the sun the comfrey will decompose pretty quick and a black liquid will come out the bottom. This is a great tomato, flowering and fruiting plant, and general fertilizer and is concentrated so needs diluting by at least 10 to 1 in the watering can. This method is far less smelly than submerging comfrey in water. The level of comfrey drops considerably, so for the next few weeks I just keep adding more. I have a large comfrey plot and most years have 3 barrels on the go. Every year or so I treat the comfrey bed with some cow muck and composted wood chip.

I really dig your videos! Two questions: *We have a short growing season. Do you happen to know if tea made in the fall will store through the winter (6-7 months) for use in the early spring? *Why harvest leaves before the plant flowers? I'd like to make tea now but my plant already has blooms.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
I've used it after six months. Because it's used for the nutrients and not the bacteria, it can store. You can use the flowers and stalks, but harvesting early leaves will promote more leaves. Allowing the plant to flower puts plant energy into the flowers and the leaves don't grow as much.

Hello from France and thank you so much for your advice . Is comfrey an invasive plant ? Are yours in pot ?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 жыл бұрын
It can be invasive if allowed to flower and go to seed. There's a Russian variety, 'Bocking 14', that doesn't have that problem. Most of mine are in open ground.

If part of what makes comfrey so great is that it mines up minerals from deep in the soil, then there’s not much advantage if you grow it in a pot.

Thanks for the video! Is this basically all you use for fertilization besides composted soil? Do you not need to oxygenate the water too or that does not matter or add any composted soil from the compost bin? If you are putting a lid on this to breakdown then is this not anaerobic type of composting? Thanks!

I spend most of my time building good soil. This tea is anaerobic and leaches out the nutrients. It really isn't a composting method.

@GardenerScott

Hi, Brent. I have kept undiluted tea for a few months and it tends to thicken, so I preferred to store it after adding water. Leaving the leaves in should allow them to break down more and potentially release more nutrients.

what is your timing for making the tea....so, what time of year is the plant first ready to harvest from? is this when you first harvest, or do you wait for around like beginning of may, start production of tea, plant end of may and use fertilizer at that time? i live in kansas city, mo...i believe zone 6. just wondering if i can make a big surplus or need to use as i go, and if you use just as first sowing or how often do you fertilize, say your tomatoes and peppers with this?...once a week?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 жыл бұрын
The plant starts growing pretty early in spring and I wait until the plant is full and strong to harvest the first leaves. Usually at the end of May (in the greenhouse). By the beginning of summer, the tea is ready to use and that corresponds well to early growth of many garden plants that can use the fertilizer. Because you dilute it for use, a little can go a long way. I typically fertilized tomatoes and peppers as they were beginning to flower, again as fruit developed, and again a few weeks before starting to harvest. You could do it more often, but I didn't because there were always many other garden chores to keep me busy.

Thank you. Comfrey is great. We can make plant tea with any plant. I throw in comfrey, but also weeds (especially the ones, that have seeds or are invasive as soaking kills them for sure.). I water twice a week, so I soak my just a few days and use it up, when I water. It seems to work, and I don't dilute (fill up bucket only 1/3 to 1/2 with leaves.) I wonder, if this tea makes bacsilus subtilis-probiotic for the people and plants?
