John once I tell you about what I use, you'll never go back, I've had static rolling ones, but I will use nothing but stucco wire, just roll it into the diameter you want, then use twist ties to hold it together, because of all the air it gets it makes compost faster than anything I've ever used, and you could just feel the heat radiating off it.

I LOVE my Mantis double barrel composters (I have two sets). I'm an older woman, so the handle method of rolling them around is best for me. I have the special door grills for exiting the finer stuff into my wheel barrel, which fits nicely under the bins. I live alone so don't have much food waste, so my compost (mostly leaves, grass and wood chips) take a long time to break down (not enough nitrogen), about a year and a half. But that's ok, because about the time I start filling up the fourth one, my first one is ready, and so on.

John, I have the exact same lifetime composter that you have. i got it last year and it works really, really well! I tried to add worms to it to help it out but the worms just disappeared. I am assuming they just died because of the heat. But the lifetime composter makes GREAT compost. All of my eligible kitchen waste goes into that badboy. My garden really got an excellent kickstart this year because of it. Highly recommended. I will probably be adding a second one soon. Happy Gardening!

TY for posting~I feel very inspired to actually do this now. I've loved plants and trees since I can remember so I enjoy gardening very much and I've learned alot just by doing. People always tell me I have a green thumb or that I know alot but truthfully I don't know that much I just "love" my plants and use common sense. If something does not do well I just dig it up and transpalant it to another location. I live in Florida now (moved from CA)~love the green all year round and lots of flowers~

I like this video just for the fact that he makes the process fun and positive. Way more upside to compost than just throwing fertilizer on your plants and walking off. Just the idea of saving money should be enough, but the added element of "going green" adds to the benefits. Your garden will thank you and your garbage bill will go way down-- plus, we're helping out the environment.

I have the first bin he showed and add dried leaves, kitchen waste and lawn clippings. I like going in and stirring and watering it once a week. I love seeing the steam rise when I break it up to stir around with my long cultivator fork. I keep the lid up most of the time so it gets good air circulation, which it seems to like. It makes amazing compost very quickly (6-8 Weeks), but does take a commitment to keep working at it. Sure is worth it for the great results and satisfaction I get!

If you can grow it, you can compost it. If you cut your own or families hair, add it also, The best compost I ever produced came from raked up leaves added to my outdoor compost pile and sat over the winter, adding household food scraps and dryer lint, and the worms just went to town. They love the rotting leaves and organic material from the kitchen. Just remember to turn it every week or so. Love the video. You go John!

Hi John. Love your videos! For carbon, I started adding empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls. There is no print on them and they are made of standard cardboard. This also cuts down on waste as people usually just throw them away. I save them until I have a good many to line it down and then I put the veggy waste (after I take out the seeds) on top of the empty toilet paper rolls. Just an idea.

I have the Lifetime Tumbler also, the best I have seen or used. Mine is either older or newer and a different style. One thing I would add is that I keep a large rubber tub underneath my tumbler for any excess water that may drain out, this effluent (compost tea) is great to water your plants.....If your tumbler is on a concrete patio the rich compost effluent that drains out will stain the concrete.

Hello John I am really stuffed for space so no room for a compost pile. When a raised bed becomes empty in the autumn, what I do is cover it with a chopped mix of grass, leaves and seaweed. That's it! It's only a few inches deep so no chance of it warming up. It's easy and quick to turn with the garden fork which speeds up decomposition and the rest is up to mother nature. Rain keeps it wet and the worms and bacteria break it down. If any of the 'goodness' is leached out by the rain its leached into the raised bed so nothings lost. Will this work?
@OhioCoastie94
@OhioCoastie94 9 жыл бұрын
Yup! It's called composting in place. If you really want to cheat, collect spent coffee grounds & scatter them onto the bed after you put down your leaves 'n stuff. Earthworms love spent coffee grounds, they turn over & aerate the soil, & their castings are black gold.

I have had a lot of luck using my scraps from home and the leaves and other trimming from my yard and garden by wrapping them in an old trampoline mat. Always good info John. Whenever Im digging and find some earthworms I walk over and throw them into my compost pile, they love it. *I wanted your opinion about my additive of wood ashes. I bar-b-q with wood and natural charcoal, when I'm done I throw the bones , eggshells and paper. Then I use the ashes. Plants love it and I figure it adds calcium, or does the calcium burn out.
