How to Make Corn on the Cob in the Microwave - No Fuss No Shucking No Silks
Hello and welcome back to In the Kitchen with Matt. I am your host Matt Taylor. Today I am going to show you how to make corn on the cob in the microwave. It is an awesome method, you don’t have to waste time shucking the corn and trying to get every bit of strand of silk off of it. It is really cool. I was a bit skeptical at first, I saw someone else do it, and I thought well I don’t know about that, and now it is one of my go-to methods for awesome corn on the cob. All you need is an oven mitt, corn on the cob, I washed it, cutting board, and a sharp knife. And now we are going to cook this on high in the microwave for three minutes. And then we will use our oven mitt to pull it out. Okay once we have it out of the microwave we make sure to hold it with our oven mitt, because it will be really hot. We take a sharp knife and we are going to cut it off at the end here. Okay, and then what we are going to do is just pinch the end, just keep pinching the end here. Wiggle it a little bit. And there you got, it came right off, super easy. Awesome! And that is how you make corn on the cob in the microwave. Really simple to do, no fuss, no shucking, no silks, awesome, if I can do it, you can do it. I am Matt Taylor; this has been another episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, thank you for joining me, if you have any questions or comments, put them down below and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thumbs up, down in the corner, push it. Like the video, share the video; don’t forget to subscribe to my channel. Take care. Time for me to dive into this guy, yeah. Mmm, mmm, yummy, yummy.

You don't need more than three minutes to boil sweet corn. If you ever wanna go back to water, there's a method that produces better results. You boil the water without the corn, take it off the stove, place the several pieces of fresh corn in the water, cover the dish, and leave it like that for 10 min.

Love this method. But, when I was kid, we grew the corn in our garden. Chucked the corn and fed those coverings to the horse and the pony. They loved it. Then, cooked the corn in the pressure cooker. After eating the corn, the horse and pony got to eat the cob. They would come to the fence looking for the food. The pony plowed the garden. She also gave us rides, buggy rides in the summer and sleigh rides in the winter. Your corn on the cob brings back memories.

That is so awesome Richard! We grew corn in our backyard in California. It was so much fun! My mom always cooked it in a pot, I think she may have used the pressure cooker as well. It tastes great that way. I love doing them on my grill too! But since I live alone, if I want one or two ears of corn, in the microwave they go! lol :)

I do corn like this all the time! I cut off any extra on the silk end and then run water over it for about a minute and then cut that end off before I put it in the microwave! Then when it’s done I unroll the leaves and silk off and discard without all the pushing and fighting with it and it comes off in a wink!

Do you have to cook one at a time? Or, can you do 3 0r 4 at once in the MW?
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 2 жыл бұрын
You can do more than one at a time, but the more you do the longer it will take to cook all of them. It's kind of weird because it take 8 to 9 minutes to do 3 all at once, and it takes about that time to do them individually as well. Of course it all depends on the wattage of your microwave as well. Mine is a 1200 watt one.

Here's a trick to butter a lot of corn on the cob very fast (at a party?). Have a jar of almost boiling water the same height as the cobs or more. Put a knob of butter in. The butter melts and floats on the top. Dip the hot corn straight in all the way and straight out. It emerges perfectly coated in butter, nothing missed, nothing wasted. The time to butter whole cob is about one second. No waiting in the line while people ahead spread (and waste) butter with knives.

FYI: For people using lower powered microwaves, add approximately 15 seconds for every 100 watt of power. This video cooks for 3 minutes in a 1200 watt microwave. If you're using a 1000 watt microwave, add 30 seconds (2x15) for a total of 3 min and 30 sec. Microwaves are not all the same, even if they have the same power level, so you will need to experiment a bit. The size of the corn will also be a factor to take into consideration. Bigger corn = more time.
@inthekitchenwithmatt

Tongs will slip on the damp corn and will smash the kernels because of their large gripping surface. As you can tell by your video, it can be tough to get the cob to turn loose of the husk and silks. Using a fork allows you not to have to handle both ends of the hot ear of corn. If you used tongs, you would have to separate the husk to get the tongs on the ear so you might as well go ahead and shuck it which defeats the purpose. The fork is a more stable way and won't inflict damage on the kernels. Just use a table fork or a two pronged meat fork to slightly part the husk and insert fork between kernels. No muss, no fuss, no damage to corn, no burnt fingers! Yumm. You inspired me and I had microwave corn on the cob yesterday for lunch!

@inthekitchenwithmatt

I have never had any problems with it. And I have done it a lot, with that said, the corn I buy is just the normal corn on the cob from the store, which if I were a betting man would say pesticides were used. Home grown corn without pesticides might or might not have a problem. But hey, they will get cooked in the microwave if there are any, a little extra protein in your diet!! LOL totally kidding. But again short answer, I haven't seen any bugs or critters once.

@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 3 жыл бұрын
You could, but typically you don't touch your actual food with oven mitts. You can hold it up higher and wiggle it and it will fall out, I usually do that, but for the video my hands would have gone out of frame and I didn't want to do that. Or you can use tongs and pull it out, or a fork, etc. Lots of different ways to get it out.

If cooking 3 min for 1 ear how many extra min for each additional ear of corn would you suggest?
@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! It depends on the wattage of your microwave. 2 ears would be 6 to 8 minutes. after that it is better to just do them one at a time like for 3 or 4 of them. They stay pretty warm, so even with 4 ears done individually the first one will still be fairly warm when the last one is done. If you need to do a lot of them, you are better off doing it the traditional way. :)

@inthekitchenwithmatt
@inthekitchenwithmatt 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean no one? I do one ear all the time, since I live by myself. And know it isn't faster to boil 1 ear, it takes way longer than 3 minutes to even get the water to boil, it takes an average of 10 minutes just to get the water boiling, then you have to boil it for 3 to 5 minutes, and you still have to deal with shucking and and silks. The whole point of this video is you don't have to wait for the water to boil, and you don't have to shuck the corn or deal with the silks. If you are doing several ears then boiling or on the grill is more appropriate. 2 ears is 5 to 6 minutes. But if you are doing less than 5 ears, it is still faster in the microwave.
