In this video we show you how to make a modern bypass closet door. The doors feature a floor to ceiling style that also serves as a custom feature in the room. This project is good for DIY people who want to add some extra style to their bedroom. This is a fun easy woodworking project anyone can do!
Materials:
x3 - 1/2" sheets of maple plywood
x2 - 3/4" sheets of plywood
x6 - 1" x 2"
1 Gallon of Titebond II Glue
Brad Nails - 1" and 1 1/2"
Johnson Heavy Duty Bypass Door Hardware
Tools:
Brad Nailer
Miter Saw
A saw to rip wood (we used the Kreg rip cut)
Circular Saw (you could do all of your cuts using this)
Hand Drill

Awesome! I have 8' large unframed closet alcoves that I I don't want to spend money on reframing. Great idea.

Mate, this is exactly the vid I've been looking for as i try to design and build some wardrobe (sorry, closet) doors for a client. I love the simple method and the resulting pattern. Big rookie error with the head being out of level, but it was all made up for when your dog gave it all the tick of approval! Great vid mate!

I'm in awe. I'm watching this from the UK, I cannot wait to go to the shop to get all the wood, but I will ask them to cut everything them to shape for me. I will have to drag my friend George, I don't think they will take me seriously if I went on my own. I'm a single mum.

We are glad you like them!!! Happy building! You all must have a lot better service than American supply stores most of our places are self service any more on the cutting.

Been debating paying for fitted wardrobes but the price tag..... Not made anything out of wood since school but a garage workbench that research deems me needing (wanting) to buy a circular saw. This was perfect for justifying my purchase so I can make doors myself. Veneered plywood, I didn't even know that was a thing. Opened my eyes to what I could do to make a door. Then just hang it. No rails to contend with my wonky floor. Great design, love it. One video, two problems resolved. I think i might actually be doing this. Eek. Thanks!

Nice build, I plan to make something similar. For keeping the door closed, how about rare earth magnet sunk into the drywall and backside of the door.

Hello, Excellent video. I'm considering doing something similar but I'm worried the weight of the doors might cause the 2x4 to sag with time. Have you noticed any dips/bending in the wood at the center of the track (where the 2 doors meet)?

I think you may be able to get away by installing some magnets on the upper left corner of the door that kept sliding. A little bit of force should be able to hold it in place after you close the door. Just a thought!

hi! loved the video! for me i would honestly be fine with just a plain wood door. i had previous doors but they broke and i still have the hardware in my wall. would i just need to attach the other corresponding hardware to the piece of wood?

Hi Evan - this is a lot better and simpler technique compared to what I have been seeing on other videos. I like the 1x2 frame on the edges that makes the building of the door so simple. I was just wondering how thick of plywood did you use in each layer? total of 2 plywood layers I believe, right? And did you use any track guide on the floor to avoid doors swinging into each other?
@evanandkristinpoole6707
@evanandkristinpoole6707 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The decorative layer is .5” and the back layer is .75”. The hardware kit I bought didn’t come with a floor mounted track and I believe it’s not necessary so I did not install a track on the floor. The doors are designed to overlap each other by a couple inches when fully closed this prevents them from running into one another.
@MariaGaliotosTX
@MariaGaliotosTX 2 жыл бұрын
So, the size of the 2 doors is the same, and the track is made in such a way as to have the doors overlap?

Those are beautiful! I've been looking for something like this wanting to create a pantry along the wall of my dining room but have had trouble finding things that fit the measurements. Can I ask what height of plywood did you get and what is the height of your ceilings? Did you choose the top mounted piece of wood afterwards in order to ensure it fit and doors weren't hanging too much?
@poolevideography1075

It was 4 x 8 foot plywood sheets . Our ceilings are 8 ft. The top mounted piece was a 2 x 4 and I accounted for it when making door. I did it to add stability when installing the track. I did not show in video but I installed a trim piece to cover the metal track and was able to nail straight into the 2 x 4 as well.

How do you prevent door warp? I would expect plywood that large to have a significant warping issue over time. Ive been building baltic birch cabinets for my entire house and avoid going over 2'x3'. Figuring out how to go big would be great.
@evanandkristinpoole6707
@evanandkristinpoole6707 4 жыл бұрын
I was concerned about the same thing. I have not had any issues yet. I’ll keep everyone posted. Often times warping is due to moisture levels changing and all the grain being in similar directions. I solved the moisture portion with polyurethane. By laminating diagonally the grains are off set by 45 degrees. This provides the doors with more rigidity which combats warping. Time will tell though lol but so far no isues

@evanandkristinpoole6707
@evanandkristinpoole6707 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Prior to screwing in the 2x4 to your ceiling just make sure it’s level using a level. If it’s level the doors will be stay shut. If it is not level use wood shims to shim the 2x4 so that it’s level and the doors will not roll to one side. I hope this helps!
@stephensarkany3577
@stephensarkany3577 Жыл бұрын
You could use door frame shims to level the 2x4 if you were covering the joint with a fascia or moulding trim.
