In this video, This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner turn a new closet into an organized storage station, complete with drawers, cubbies, and a coat rack.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.
General contractor Tom Silva takes us along as he helps a homeowner solve an all-too-common issue: coat and shoe storage. Rather than letting these items collect in the entryway, Tom and the homeowner build a set of built-in closet storage shelves, complete with shoe drawers, cubby holes, and a coat rack. Made from plywood, Tom uses box joints and dados to create strong cabinets and shows the homeowner how to scribe the shelf for a perfect fit.
Skill: ⅗
Cost: About $300
Time: A weekend

He made it look easy. It’s not. It looks it, but it’s not. Also, he had one of the squarest closets I’ve ever seen. Kudos to whoever built and dry-lined that.

I'd like to see the whole process on how they select certain people for their shows. Do people write in asking for help? how long does it take to be selected for the show? There's obviously a script written up and and it's obviously rehearsed. How long from start to finish? they'd have to come to the house and see the difficulty as well as if selected order all the parts for the job.

Assuming this is New England, I would have done metal mesh for the drawers and a rubber insert on the floor. The boots are going to have snow, water, mud, etc. They need to breath and be able to be cleaned easily. The wood drawers will get ruined quickly.
