In this video, This Old House carpenter Nathan Gilbert helps a pair of homeowners provide safe passage to the backyard for their children by replacing a double window with a sliding patio door and building a beautiful, low-maintenance deck.

What good is a beautiful backyard if you don’t have a way to get into it? That’s what a pair of homeowners faced when they called the Ask This Old House team for help. Their beautiful home has a fenced-in backyard, but to gain access, the couple’s children would have to walk out the front of the home and through a garden gate.
Carpenter Nathan Gilbert Knew just how to help. He located a double window on the backside of the house that would be perfect for converting to a door. With the couple’s help, Nathan removed the old windows, wall paneling, and even some framing to make way so he could install a new sliding patio door. Here’s how he did it.
Difficulty: ⅗
Time: Several days
Cost: Around $1,500
Where to find it?
To remove the windows Nathan starts by scoring the paint around the window stops with a utility knife [homedepot.sjv.io/g1LKRr]. Then he uses a pry bar [homedepot.sjv.io/oqGvRg] and hammer [homedepot.sjv.io/ZQmzbR] to pull off the window stops.
After removing the stops, remove the window sashes and the frame. Score along the paint line of the window trim with a utility knife. Use a pry bar and hammer to remove the window trim and the wall paneling under the window.
To remove the jamb, use a combination of prying tools and a reciprocating saw [homedepot.sjv.io/QydA56].
Self-adhesive flashing tape [homedepot.sjv.io/vN6QA3] provides an added layer of protection to the rough opening. Create a water-resistant seal by putting a layer of silicone sealant [homedepot.sjv.io/ZQjLgK] along the edge of the flashing tape.
After fitting the door in place, support, and level the door with shims [homedepot.sjv.io/ba1Png]. After checking that the door is level use screws [homedepot.sjv.io/daJkm2] to secure it. Add flashing tape around the exterior border of the door with a ¼” overhang. Add Self-adhesive flashing tape to the exterior header.
If you have questions about your DIY door and window projects, speak with a The Home Depot associate through the Home Depot’s Millwork Virtual Apron program [homedepot.sjv.io/6eMnEQ] for expert help and advice.

I replaced some windows by myself for the first-time last fall. I was absolutely blown away by how easy they come out or maybe I should say how little was holding them in. Now I want to do them all just for peace of mind!

I love how the contractor shows up, looks at the job, and gets right to work. No measuring, no checking for structural issues, no permits. This show makes it look like everything happens really quick.

I know side projects become frustrating for sure when you do them. A 3-4 day job here was wrapped up in 15 minutes. Then you go to do it, make mistakes, forget something from the hardware store, etc. It gets irritating when yours isn't as fast, lol.

Obviously there was a lot of prior planning and prep. Building permit had been issued and slider of course wasn't chosen and picked up on day of install let alone all the misc supplies Nathan wouldn't necessarily have off hand. Header size is typically determined by a structural engineer at time of building permit application and review... The install was quick but that happens because of his experience and proper planning. A lot of detail can't be shown due to video time constraints. Always good work from the TOH team. Great to see Nathan a part of the group, Mark, and Jen with sadly our long time TOH experts nearing retirement.

I have no idea how they can wear safety glasses and a dust mask at the same time without the glasses fogging up in about 10 seconds. I've tried every kind of anti fog glasses, all the sprays and wipes. Nothing works. I think its because anti fog coatings just dont like to stick to plastic. I've even tried swimming goggles and the moisture from my eyes fogs them up!

I know it's a nit, but the video ignored how the new header was aligned with and joined to the stud ends above the window opening. Did they cut the original load-bearing stud at exactly the right place so that each of the old studs hit the top of the new header? Were the bottom of those studs screwed or nailed into the top of the new header? I know these guys are professionals, but I've done enough work like this to wonder whether installing that header was really as easy as the video made it seem.

My only gripe is why is she wearing a dress and working on the house? My wife and I remodeled a house in our 20’s during the pandemic and sold it. I taught her to run a saw, both circular and miter, nail gun, lay flooring, cut trim, set toilets, run water lines and HVAC and she loved every minute of it. But she wore pants and PPE. Otherwise great job guys. Love TOH. My philosophy is to teach her enough that if I were gone tomorrow she wouldn’t need me.
