Hi Marie, thanks so much for keeping things updated and fun for us, I really appreciate all your hard work :). I have a question related to surfactant active matter allowed in shampoo bars. I read that in shampoo bars the general rule is to use 10-15% so I went and calculated the recipe and turns out the active matter percentage is quite high so I am now confused by this info, can you please explain the concept to me? If I have a high active matter it would damage my hair and skin or how should I interpret this info? is it allowed to have a high percentage of surfactants in shampoo bars or should we find fillers and stick to this general rule of thumb? with love, from Romania :D
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ioana! ASM recommendations are really just recommendations. They are one piece of the gigantic "it depends" puzzle that is formulating with surfactants. Imagine I told you cakes should only ever contain 10-15% sweetener. What kind of sweetener? Applesauce vs. white sugar vs. stevia would yield very different results. What if the cake contains a lot of something very bitter or sour? How sweet do you want the cake to be? 10-15% will not always be suitable, and the same is true with surfactant products. That said, I have never seen a shampoo bar formulation with just 10-15% ASM, and that includes formulations from books, suppliers, ingredient manufacturers, and my course work with Formula Botanica. That's incredibly low, even for a liquid shampoo, let alone a solid one. I would be wary of the recommendations from that source. Happy making!

Interesting how you don’t have to melt down the surfactants. I use a recipe that I love for these, but I will try this. One less step (no melting) is great. Plus, then you don’t have to wait for it to cool to add the preservative. Thank you!
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 3 жыл бұрын
I stopped melting surfactants right around the time I shared the original mango shampoo bar (~2 years ago) and OH MY GOODNESS it's 1000x better. Faster, less mess, less sticky fighting and smooshing, and the bars are harder to boot. It's the bestest 😄 Also, side note... I know I took that mango shampoo bar to Australia with me in early 2018. Why didn't I share it until March 2019?! Past me made some weird calls. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Marie, have you ever tried using Polyquaternium 10 instead of 7?
@lizcademy4809
@lizcademy4809 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting recipe ... I make melted shampoo bars with the same surfactants. This method does look a lot neater! How do you make sure the preservative is thoroughly mixed with everything? I would worry that it's not evenly mixed. And, can you use a different conditioning agent? I love BTMS. I read the blog post and know why you didn't use it. Can a different liquid conditioning agent could be used instead of the polyquat 7?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 3 жыл бұрын
If the colour is evenly distributed you can be confident everything else you added at that time is as well :) It's also worth remembering that these bars are very likely self-preserving due to the low pH, low water content, and high surfactant content-I included a preservative because I didn't test for long enough to swear to self-preservation, but I don't think the preservative is super super necessary. You are certainly welcome to experiment with different conditioning agents. Try it :)

As this is a free formulation, I hope you can appreciate that I did not seek out people with all different hair types (which could easily be upwards of 20!) to test this bar. That said, I do not think there is any broad hair type that it definitely wouldn't work for. My hair is fairly normal on the oily/dry scale and is type 1b and it works well for me :)

What is the substitute material for AS 90
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! You'll find the answer to your question + lots of formula-specific and more general information about substitutions and alternative ingredients in both the partner blog post for this formulation (linked in the description box below) and the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/). I'd recommend starting off with the big "Substitutions" list at the end of the partner blog post, but please also take the time to read through the Humblebee & Me Encyclopedia posts for each ingredient as well. There is a TON of information in the encyclopedia to help you understand what an ingredient is, why it's used, the job it's performing in any given formulation, and what ingredient(s) you might be able to use instead. If, after looking through all of those resources, you still can't assemble a collection of ingredients that will allow you to make some version of the formulation, then I'm afraid that formulation may not be for you. It's an unfortunate reality that not all ingredients are available in all parts of the world. I have shared over 1200 formulations on Humblebee & Me since launching in 2011, so I would recommend looking for something similar that uses ingredients you can get. Please use the main menu on the website (www.humblebeeandme.com/) or search for more general terms (for example, "lip balm" rather than "sticky coconut lip balm") at www.humblebeeandme.com/search/. Good luck & happy making!

Hello Marie, I wasn't sure where to ask this i.e. here on KZfaq or in your Hive forum, but I noticed that there is not a lot of activity on the forum in over a year (my posts there still unanswered after a year), so thought I'd ask you here and hope that you see these posts. (Not sure if you have staff answering your social media for you or not). So, my question is that if most people who DIY do so to avoid the detergents and surfactants and get a more natural product, do you have any receipes for bar shampoo that don't require using any of the surfactants and detergents?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 3 жыл бұрын
Hi MJ! I have zero staff-everything is just me, and I'm sure you can understand that 100k people to one means I can't get back to everyone all the time :) I'd encourage you to read these articles: www.humblebeeandme.com/lets-talk-natural/ www.humblebeeandme.com/natural-efficacy-fallacy-natural-shaming/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/whats-the-point-of-diy-if-youre-using-all-these-chemicals/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/is-x-ingredient-a-chemical/ I don't have any shampoos that don't use surfactants-even my old soap-style shampoo bars don't qualify because soap is a surfactant :) Surfactants are almost always what make a formulation cleansing, and they can come from a wide variety of sources. Non-soap surfactants have the benefit of being able to be acidic, which is very important for healthy haircare. Learn more here: science-yhairblog.blogspot.com/2013/07/ph-and-your-hair-little-redox-to-make.html. Happy making!

I always link all the ingredients for any given formulation in the blog post, which is linked in the description box below the video (that's one of the many reasons I highly suggest reading the blog post as well as watching the video! If you're not sure what I mean by the "description box", read this: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/whats-the-description-box-on-youtube/.). Sometimes those links break because they're always off-site links, or sometimes the store I've linked to isn't in your country. That's why I also have a giant page of places to shop all over the world, which you can find here: www.humblebeeandme.com/resources/. It doesn't have every country in the world, but it does contain all the online stores I know about. If your country isn't listed, that's because I don't know about any online stores in your country. You could try looking for a local Facebook group for people who like making soap & other cosmetics-they may be able to recommend places to shop. And for some more discussion on ingredients, I recommend these FAQs: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/why-dont-you-only-use-ingredients-that-are-easily-available-globally/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/what-ingredients-should-i-purchase-when-getting-started/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/is-there-one-place-i-can-buy-everything/ www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/why-do-you-use-so-many-new-fancy-hard-to-get-ingredients/
