I wrapped a brick in fabric. 😂😂😂 --Seriously you can buy a flat paver for like 4$ at the hardware store. I just used a brick out of my backyard.

I use large washers I stole from work (not really, they're just laying around) and I also use an antique iron, plus my tape dispenser, my phone, old paperweights, just whatever is handy.

I love the washers! Pattern weights are on my to do list this year so these are great ideas. A friend of mine used scrap fabric to make some small bags that she filled with rice. They work well and last a long time
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 6 ай бұрын
Bags with rice is a great idea. You really want to keep in mind the weight of the weights. You need something at least a few pounds to really hold your pattern and fabric down. That is why we used pennies for the bag. Send pics when you make your weights :)

I have a huge selection of cast iron irons, from a half pound one which is so so small, I also use pickle jar weights (glass) they are used to keep any food pickles in the brine, they have now become glass pattern weights, I also have some bought ones which were gifts, a selection of weights in the shape of buttons and all in a hand made leather case, some weighted wooden cotton reels, and a large selection of brass balance scale weights, hugely pleasing to use. The only thing is I keep them in a large wooden box, which cannot be lifted as its all to heavy… but i really do love all of my weights. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on pattern weights.

You crack me up 🤣! But seriously is there anything cuter than a baby pig…..with wings???? I am a cat lover too! So you tapped my happy buttons today! Sewing, flying pigs, cats, great ideas, a musical T shirt lol! Anyway, I refused to spend the amount of money required for pattern weights. So I bought a large bag of colorful children’s bean bags for around $9.00 US from Amazon. Granted I used a lot of them, but they did the job. No pins and the patterns didn’t move at all. I had been having trouble with pinning properly (I’m new to sewing), so I was having to repin in places. And sometimes come back and trim spots that weren’t lining up correctly. But the bean bags have worked out well for me. Yeah! I really like the washer idea though. So I think I will stop by the local hardware store and see what I can find. Thanks so much for the tips 🦋

I have been looking for something to put down on my ruler when I make cuts with my rotary cutter, to keep it from shifting. My resolution this year is to make sure my fabric cuts are precision straight. I seem to have trouble with that and it shows in my projects. I really want to get better and I think those antique irons would be ideal. Your covered washers were adorable, too. Thank you for the fun video.

Cool and educational video, thank you. You spoke to weight, it sounds like you want about 3-4 lbs, but what about shape? Do your professional rectangular ones work better than say the round washers? Which do you reach for, and why?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 4 ай бұрын
It depends on the size of the piece you are cutting out. I generally go for the irons or the flat rectangles. I prefer the heavy weights so things do not move around.

How heavy should a fabric weight be to be effective? You said 2.5lb, which is roughly 1kg? There are many tutorials for sewing custom weights which involves stuffing rice, but I feel like there's no way one weight can reach 1kg.

Correct. Those weights are not heavy enough.
