Too many customers do not have a positive charging experience the first few visits to Electrify America. In this video, Principal Bob shows his method of making sure that EA works every-time, along with some tips on efficient charging and charging etiquette when using an EA station.

I’m 66 and also have a newfound appreciation for more frequent stops. Aside from the fact that trying to race across the country and wracking up 350+ miles between stops was going to kill me (literally, staying awake and alert is more difficult for the older me), regular bathroom breaks is more of a requirement now than a convenience!

Just wanted to say that I really appreciate this video. As someone who’s going to be purchasing an EV in the next couple of years, it’s great to know where the current technology is so we can see the progress over time.

I did a 7700 mile road-trip from CA to MI and FL and back with over 50 DC fast charging stops in my 2020 Chevy Bolt almost entirely on EA. It’s a great way to travel!

For every kWh you get 3 miles. Remember, kW is power and kWh is energy.

Interesting video. We just returned from a 2800 mile trip with our Kona EV....easy peasy trip, no range anxiety at all. We used EA most of the time but all the chargers worked pretty well regardless of brand. We have had the car since August and we have done 8500 miles and the car has been great and yes we do not really want to travel with our ICE vehicles. You are absolutely correct it adds time to your trip...we would travel between 500 and 600 miles per day and our days where between 9 and 10 hours (in an ICE vehicle that would have been 7 to 8 hours). No big deal at all and the breaks where appreciated. Charging costs worked out to 1/3 of our Toyota Rav4. EV's are not for everyone, I still have a pickup truck as well as the Rav4 (along with a couple old MGB's) but the vehicle we enjoy the most is the Kona EV. Thanks for the video. Oh and actually DCFC are not considered Level 3. There is just Level 1 and 2 and then DCFC....not that it really matters too much just not a recognized term. Mike 🇨🇦

EVGO has AutoRecharge, plugnplay...even though some cars doesn't even support it. i think this issue mainly on EA's part. Eventually both manufacturers and charging stations need proper protocol to work universally.

Increase in speed is due to increase in pack voltage. Battery does not warm up instantly.

Good info, but I don't even do any of that. I have the EA app in my Apple Wallet. So I just plug the car (Polestar 2) in, hold my iPhone next to the symbol that looks like a hand holding a credit card in a circle and after the digital hand shake charging starts right up.

Thanks for the video. One correction: Level 3 charging doesn't exist. These are DC Fast Chargers. You can verify by googling "Level 3 charging doesn't exist"

I initiate the charge via the same app, but on the CarPlay integration.

I use my Apple wallet and tap on my pass then after plugging in I tap rfid space next to card reader. No need to open app or look for a number

@@Badgerpat83 your model most probably will not improve the charging speed because of the battery chemistry. But the 2023 VW ID4 has 170 KW charging speed, at least they said this...

If you had a Tesla instead of a POS VW... you can use the related application on your phone or the screen in the car to condition the battery for rapid charging. Greatly increasing the charging speed/efficiency.

I get 200 miles range at Tesla Supercharger in less than 15 minutes. My 3,200 mile trip was every bit as fast as gassing up. With a 405 mile range, the trip was flawless and fast.

For the 2021 ID.4 (e.g., 1st Edition), I’d like to see a comparison between the original charging curve and the charging curve post-3.1 update. I understand that hardware improvements since 2021 mean we won’t see the fast charging newer models get, but I thought the software update was supposed to increase max charging from 125 to 135 kw on earlier models. I am planning a 5,000 miles road trip in the not-too-distant future and would like to know what kind of impact the software update might have on a trip with 30 or more 0:02 charging stops. For instance, 10 minutes saved per stop is 300 minutes off the trip. that’s 5 hours!

I’d also like to know which OTA software updates we can expect here in the US (now that we have 3.1) and when they might start rolling those out. Europe is way ahead of us in updates.

I hope that the Electrify America charging network is or becomes profitable soon (despite 3-year free charging incentives for VW EVs). This would help to better maintain the stations.

Actually, the EA network was never intended to be "profitable", at least not to VW. It's essentially a penalty network. However, in any case.... They have a dilemma. With Tesla proposing adoption of their connector (and maybe charger construction?) as the US standard, while being plug and play, reliable (without a required procedure) in greater numbers, with greater fleet share, a fast modular deployment system ready to implement and being according to reports, 20% of the price per unit, A Government wishing for a fast expansion while using public funds responsibly might be inclined to choose that option? 🤔 . Opening of the design patent to others has or course provided opportunity for vehicle and charger manufacturers to produce their own cloned versions and benefit from the grants on offer?

Any truth to the fact you can buy an id4 cheaper in Tennessee or even if you live in Chattanooga? Do they give discounts to Tennessee residents?

Typically (and I was told this by VW when I ordered my ID.4 1st Ed. and demand was leading some dealerships to charge premiums, sales price is determined by the dealership), VW only provides a “suggested” retail price; although, VW might try to incentivize sales at some point. But I believe it will be a classic capitalist supply/demand/maximum profitability question. On the other hand, with Tennesseans being a little reluctant to adopt the “green” technology (can’t give the “left” a win, you know), discounts may be needed to bring in converts.

Please call them DCFC, not Level 3, as there are many different types of DCFC stations, and people will be confused.

Hot battery (above ~30 C) is bad for my e-Golf charging speed because car must derate charge speed to limit pack heating. Your advice is not applicable to BEVs without battery pack cooling system.

Plug&Charge with ID.4 is taking too long. Taycan has it, Mach-e has it, F-150 Lightning has it, as do other BEVs. What is taking VW so long?

I agree. The ID.4 is a wonderful car, but VW has to make the software equal to the car.

@@electricprincipal543 Bad news on the VW software suite. They just confirmed they will be pursuing the "Porsche/ Audi" version of the two options previously in development that those two companies will get the new product in about 2026(?) filtering down to other brands later. Likewise, the next generation "Trinity" platform has been delayed several years (2028?) . Herbert will no doubt be frustrated, but not surprised.

wow you people who don't live in california are so lucky with your totally empty EA stations. Usually jam packed outside of graveyard hours anywhere in california due to the insane home KWH prices forcing people to need to save 10$ by charging for free at EA

i mean, i save up to 20 when i go to charge at night, so it adds up. I drive for uber so 20 dollars a day of savings helps a lot.

I don’t understand why you would take a the spot of a 350kw charger when your car can’t use more then a 150kw can produce. You’re breaking the educate rule in your video

No one was at any chargers when I pulled in. Only one 150kW charger in the lot. That is also the the CHAdeMO charger. In this case, I would leave the 150 open. Thanks for the question.

How much fossil fuel was used to make your battery?

How much fossil fuel was used to drill for the crude oil used to make your gasoline? How much fossil fuel was used to transport that crude oil to the refinery? How much fossil fuel was used at the refinery to turn that crude oil into gasoline? How much fossil fuel was used to transport that gasoline from the refinery to your local gas station? How much fossil fuel are you using? I'd say a hell of a lot more than this guy charging his electric vehicle!

Very good question. If you want to educate yourself on the answer, there are a lot of videos that cite research for when in an EVs life it overcomes an ICE vehicle with net emissions. If you're not really interested in the science, and just want to throw grenades, I'd suggest joining the Army.
