perlite is not styrofoam and his mix is awfully thin for hypertufa which is the mix he is using. Normally you just make it thick enough to take form when squeezed so you can form it. You don’t use concrete - it is portland cement. Cement is plain cement, concrete has sand/rocks i.e. aggregates already in the mix. Perlite It is a mined product that is expanded with heat and it comes in several sizes. Horticulture is the smallest. A #4 is called sponge rock used by orchid growers. You can carved a stamp and stamp into the pot when just unformed. See Guy Wolf pots with his neat stamps. Look for white portland cement too if you want to add cement/concrete colorants. Everyone also puts them in the shade especially if you are in hot zones - the long it goes through cure process the better.. Why he calls them faux concrete I don’t know if using concrete mix. 1 second ago

The mixture most use - see Fine Gardening magazine article is 1 part portland cement, 1 1/2 parts perlite and 1 1/2 parts garden peat moss. I have seen it bumped to 2 parts on perlite and peat. Depends on the texture you want. You can add in per recipe a handful of reinforcing mesh fibers from a concrete supply store. See my other comment for difference in concrete and cement. And you can use white portland cement for white pots or if you want to add colorants. He didn’t mention texturizing it after unforming to round out and make it more natural. Keep thickness consistent when hand forming which he isn’t doing. Also you can add in shredded paper or sphagnum moss strands in the mix to eventually drop out or I have pressed them in right after unforming (be gentle) using tweezers to push in. Without concrete on these, they will drop out sooner or can be burned out to give nooks and crevices. I have placed on the backside as I’m pressing the mix to the form. Because you have sprayed your mold with oil or mold release - the paper/spag nor the mix will stick to form. But you can also use plastic to line forms.

All ingredients appear to occupy an equal volume in the mixing tray. I think it would be safe to assume he used equal parts of each ingredient(1/3 of each) I watched another tutorial where the quantities recommended were 1 part cement and two parts moss. Basically he just replaced one part of the moss with Perlite.

WHAT A GREAT PROJECT. I like the idea, definitely giving this a try since concrete pots are very expensive here. These will be lighter, I found out that they are called Hypertufa Pots and are used for succulents.

Why can't people giving instructions on concrete and hypertufa understand the difference from cement and concrete? The moment they say "concrete" instead of "cement" they lose credibility for me. H needed to weigh down the inner mold, but he didn't. Also, his mix looked too wet, so pots will soon crack.

Nice. You can paint them, too. Chicago Botanic Garden posted a video in 2010 showing how to make really big ones, and they said it only takes 12 hours to set. They made reusable molds.

The entire point of these is they are porous. No need for drainage holes. Depending on your plants of course and how often you water.

My comment was because she asked the same question I would ask. "What are the proportions of raw material.... " You didn't answer and actually laughed when asked specifics. The title says how to make, not how to mold. You obviously should be commended for pursing an idea. I viewed you video based on the title containing the word "How". Delete my comments, they aren't worth your aggravation and was posted out of the moments frustration seeking information. My bad

Yeah the Hypertufa mix that I make is 2 parts Perlite and Peat Moss to 1 part Concrete. If you do the same parts of all the ingredients the actual pot gets heavier, but you can get that "polished" look. You also want the consistency to be a bit less water, kind of like crunchy peanut butter, But you are right, I was looking for something else to spark my interest and he literally doesn't offer any information at all. :( Hope this helps!

I noticed that some pots are darker colored and some are light? How do you get the different shades of color?
@helenshowtocreate
@helenshowtocreate 8 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I put more cement than the other two ingredients. This makes them darker. I also have tried the cement liquid color, however when I have added the liquid color they seem to take longer to dry. I've tried red, black and beige. Thank you for watching.

He said "Perlite" which is correct. www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-2-cu-ft-Perlite-Soil-Amendment-100521091/205655210 Perlite and cement mixes great! Vermiculite is the WORST thing to use. It expands when heated.
