New video demonstrating a Guar Gum recipe: • How to Make Giant Bubb...
I had more fun making this video than any I can remember in the recent past. Making giant bubbles may turn into an ongoing hobby. Some of my younger cousins have certainly enjoyed it as well! The bubbles seen in this video all used the three part bubble mix that I show being made.
24 oz Dishwashing Liquid
1 tbsp J-Lube (The most important part for giant bubbles)
3 US gal Water
After filming all the shots used in this video I started experimenting with baking powder and found that 3 tbsp added to the above mix improves the longevity and durability of the bubbles significantly. The ones in the video may have been large, but I have since been able to make them much larger! As I mention at the end of the video, the size increases greatly as you learn.
Here is a source for J-Lube as promised (one bottle makes hundreds of gallons of bubble mix): www.amazon.com/One-10-oz-bottl...
For those outside of the USA it may be difficult to find J-Lube. An alternative giant bubble mix uses Guar Gum instead, and quite effectively. Guar Gum is common worldwide. More info about bubble mixes using Guar Gum and where it is usually available for purchase can be found here: soapbubble.wikia.com/wiki/Reci...
For my bubble wand I use two fishing poles similar to this model: www.amazon.com/Shakespeare-Fou...
The fishing poles come in four sections, but I removed the last section because it was too flimsy to support the heavy wet rope. The tri string loop is attached to the end of the third section of each pole. As shown in the video, I use carabiners as an easy way of taking loops on and off, though a loop could just as easily be taped directly to the pole.
The rope I use for my tri string loop is 100% cotton clothes line with the core removed as demonstrated. Removing the core allows the rope to absorb significantly more bubble mix which allows much larger bubbles to be made. For more information about making a tri string wand (it's not a difficult thing to figure out on your own) you can do more reading here (there are also listed a number of other wand types that may be of interest): soapbubble.wikia.com/wiki/Gett...
Thank you for being one of the proud few who read video descriptions! If you would really like to help me out I would love it if you would share this video on Facebook, Twitter, or whatever else the kids are using these days. Thanks for watching! #NightHawkInLight

Right..I just spent last 2 weeks hiding my bubble lab from my kid experimenting trying to get the perfect solution and I finally did it and boy oh boy I'm soooo happy so excited to show my kid today. I made 2 5 gallon buckets filled with it too so this should last a while. Granted I did fail another 10gallons in my experiments, lol. Ingredients are fragile and you have to add precise amounts, only thing that doesn't totally ruin it with too much is the dawn soap. Anything else, completely destroys entire bubble solution if you add too much.

This worked so well and a huge hit for kids and adults! Used the baking soda. Made some large adult ones with broom sticks and small ones for the kids with 2 foot dowels and 7 feet rope. Had some rope burn pulling the nylon from 125 feet of rope. Made hours of fun camping. Adult sticks bubbles popped quickly when it became a hot 30 degrees Celsius outside. Used up all 6 gallons of mixture in a day.

I made a quick stand with the bubble mix at the top with a hole in it. Out of the hole I had 2 strings that were constantly making bubbles without the need to dip it. It was so easy to use that I had some kids play with it and it was great fun for them. I will make a video soon about how I made it. I have a short video now on my channel that shows it in action. Thanks for the inspiration. Let me know what you think of it.

i share this on your INSTRUCTABLES page but noticed that there have no comments in 10 months...so i am posting this comment here in the hopes that you see it... you, and your willingness to share this, have inspired me, but more importantly, my daughter! and that means everything to me! i wanted to share a story about my 7yr old daughter, myself and our dear friend, peter, who after a day of blowing bubbles and watching mayah innocently destroy them, screamed out "STOP!!!! (he is in his 80's) please, there is a whole world in there. and you're killing them all!" he showed her how to get right up under them and gently blow on them to see how long she could keep them floating...it was an exercise in slowing down, and it worked! so a few weeks later, she and i were camping, deep in the woods but with plenty of little clearings for the sunlight to peak through the trees. this time, she was the bubble blower and it was i who stood under them and blew gently to try and keep them from crashing down...right at that moment i noticed something quite extraordinary that i had overlooked most of my life. it was right then that peter's voice flooded my memory, "there is a whole world in there!" and indeed there was! our reflected planet was being seen, for the first time, by my eyes, in every single bubble that was blown from that point on! after seeing your video and showing it to my little girl, we were both brought back to a beautiful summer we shared with our friend peter! so thank you!

Believe it or not, the bubbles in this video are tiny compared to what I've been able to make since filming it. Making bubbles at night when it's cool and humid especially can yield some real giants. I may have to get some lights outside so I can show the real potential. As the weather cools down as we get into fall we'll see if I can achieve the same size in daylight!

My wife bought me a Klutz brand bubble maker many years ago that had a bubble recipe that included glycerine. It worked fantastically and I entertained the kids in the neighborhood many evenings in the summertime. My favorite thing to do was make a bubble just as a thermal was forming, close it off and let it float upward with the kids counting for how long it lasted. I will have to try getting the contraption out and making the mixture with J-lube instead.

I spent a couple of hours watching your various videos. This one was absolutely the most fun! I will be gathering the materials to create these giant bubbles for the grandkids. Thank you for the videos lil brother.

I made enough of these bubbles last year for the last day of school for 3 classrooms of kids and they worked perfectly!!! What a fun year-end activity! I'm going to a big Italian Club picnic tomorrow and thought I'd make another batch. I'm a bit worried they might not work this time, though (I tried the 1/2 in. puddle left in the bottom of the bucket after I filled my jugs). Here's what I noticed this time: - white sediment on bottom of bucket after letting sit overnight (maybe it was there last time, but I didn't notice) - I tried remixing this sediment into the bubble solution before filling the jugs (does it need to re-settle again in the jugs?) - before remixing the sediment, the solution seemed slimy (J-Lube seems to have mixed in), so I think it might have been the baking powder that settled at the bottom - when using the wand (same wands as first time), the pre-bubble seems weaker (breaks more easily before becoming a bubble), but it does not seem "too" watery (still slimy) - I can't seem to open the wands as widely without the pre-bubble breaking - I'm able to make large"ish" bubbles with great care, but not the giant ones like last time - it was hot outside (about 29ºC) with a gentle breeze.... calling for 30ºC tomorrow when I want to use this solution Questions: (1) Is the white sediment normal (baking powder old?)? (2) Should the sediment be mixed back in (as it will likely settle again now that the solution is in jugs)? (3) Is there anything I should/can do, or just hope for the best at the picnic? Thank you SO much for sharing this recipe! Sandra

The sediment is corn starch from the baking powder which is normal. It should not be mixed back in. It's hard to make giant bubbles when it's so hot out.

Did the bubbles at the family pig roast last night. It worked like a charm and entertained kids and adults alike for hours until all 3 gallons were gone. Got the cotton line from Tractor Supply and had to remove the nylon core. J-Lube from Amazon. Used the 3 tbsp of baking soda recommended. Connected the line ends with a random knot and put it at the bottom of the loop. Used overhand knots on a bight and zip ties to connect the line to the fishing poles. Got some good 20' long bubbles going as well as a lot of 3-4' roundish ones. I used Dawn (non anti-bacterial).

Very cool! Yeah you can go through three gallons pretty quickly. Next time try baking powder instead of baking soda, that's what I use. They're similar but not altogether the same.

You're right, I meant baking powder. My brother mixed up another batch Saturday for a graduation party. Giant bubbles are a winner. Too bad I left all my stripped rope in Ohio. For the rope, I used small crochet hooks to pull the nylon out in a few spots along the way and then cut and pulled smaller sections of nylon leaving the cotton rope in tact.

J-Lube or guar gum. One or the other is necessary for bubbles this large or larger. If all you want are small bubbles there are other mixes you can use, but nothing else for this size.

BEST BUBBLES EVER !!! The children had sooooo much fun.... That the adults couldn't stand it any longer, and had to join in !! Put bubble mix on their arms, allowing them to carry bubbles, and to put their arms inside the bubbles.
