Glühwein is the name of the German mulled wine that one can buy at the Christmas markets. Its name means "glow wine" and it really makes you feel like you are glowing from the inside. Here is the Glühwein recipe and you will find more information and variations in my blog post.

I was stationed with NATO in Heidelberg. We went to the field with my fellow German soldiers. It was my first time drinking Gluhwein It is very good in the winter.

Just a tip that I would do is to warm up the grape juice prior to adding it to the caramelized sugar.

My mom made her version of this every year for Christmas Eve, wonderful memory. We drank it in a glass that fit into a silver holder. The holder looked like the bottom of a silver mug. ( I hope that made sense) that was our tradition and the only thing we drank out of those glasses. ❤️💕

We have a wonderful Christkindl markt here in Cincinnati and it's so perfect to walk around the square with a mug of glühwein while the kids ice skate and the snow is falling! Can't wait to try this recipe

Обожаю глинтвейн. Когда мы встречаем праздник на природе и вокруг мороз,то я кладу все специи и фрукты в термос и заливаю их подогретым вином.В таком виде глинтвейн настаивается и долго остаётся горячим. Спасибо за рассказ.

I used Bordeaux Supérieur 2016 wine. It suits also very nice. I bought the electronic thermometer lately just to keep the right temperature. Your recipe is delicious. Glühwein smells beautiful. Thank you.

I make this all winter. I never thought about caramelizing the sugar and will try this next time. I find if the citrus peel is left in for too long (30-40 minutes max) it will make it bitter. I usually make mine with apple juice (Apfelsaft) Also can be bottled and kept in refrigerator for later. Lecker!

Love this compared to so many silly versions of mulled wine on KZfaq. What separates this is traditional wisdom. A fan of the use of Juniper as well.

I was in the US Army in Gießen in 2001. A girl who was very special to me told me about Glühwein. Christmas time is always the best with Glühwein!

I tried this recipe last week, I could not find juniper berries so I substituted 5 or 6 cardamom pods instead. It turned out great but I’m thinking the fragrance would have been even better with those juniper berries. I need to keep my eyes open for them…thanks for making this video!

Sounds delicious...my first experience with glühwein was at the Christkindlemarkt in Nuremberg...as I was blowing on the hot liquid to cool it a bit...when I made the mistake of inhaling the spicy vapors...WOW! Wishing you Fröhliche Weihnachten!

I’d melt the sugar at a much lower temp, to reduce the risk of burning. And adding in the grape/apple juice very slowly. 👍🏻

You really can’t beat home grown fruit, none of the under ripe picking and cold storage that’s necessary for commercial sale. It means sweeter, often juicier depending upon the seasons weather. One of the best fruits I’ve ever had were my blood plums and apricots eaten immediately upon picking from my own grown tree. Sadly I don’t live on that property anymore. I grew 17 different fruits.

To get more aroma from spices I would boil them in plain water first and then add that 💧 with spices in mixture and boil,, fresh ginger is a demo addition

You can have them serve you your gluhwein in a terracotta or other mug to keep, extra money of course. Mine says “frohe weihnachten”

😆 You’re supposed to bring that mug back and get your money back then. It’s called “pfand”. But of course you can also keep it for that amount.

I tried your recipe and it's really good in terms of sweetness. What I found not so good was heaviness, not sure how to explain it. It was too heavy to drink, is there advice on how to make this drink more light?

Do you mean heavy in terms of the alcohol? Then maybe chose a wine with less % or you could substitute some of it with more juice.

@@MyGermanRecipes I've read your advice about percents, ours was 13.5%. Maybe it just wasn't good?.. By heaviness I mean that it is difficult to drink, it wasn't easy to drink. Next time I will try to use lower alcohol

Can I use non-organic 🍋 and 🍊? Also, what about other ingredients? Are they organic or normal ones? Is it "cosher" to mix organic ingredients with normal ones? These questions are super important to me, and I'm so confused! 🤯

I don‘t mind you asking 😀. Yes, I have lost weight ... after first gaining it. I had some injuries which kept me from exercising properly for a year and now I am basically back to my former normal.

This is a recipe I think I requested at some point, so thank you very much 😊 is the grape juice a way to extend it and reduce the level of alcohol or is it traditionally made this way? I think juniper berries are used in making gin? Might be difficult to track down here in Australia but may be available from brewing shops.

It's traditionally made with grape juice. You can leave the juniper berries out if you don't get them at your spice section. I don't think it will make too much of a difference.

I can't find juniper berries. Is there a substitute you suggest, or just leave them out? I also usually add brandy or some other alcohol like that. Thoughts?

Just leave them out. If you add strong alcohol other than wine then it’s called punch. Go for it if you can handle it and don’t need to drive 🤷‍♀️

After making this, can it be stored for another day, since I wouldn't likely be able to finish a bottle of wine in one night? Or perhaps just use half the recipe?

If you put a lid on it, I think it should be ok. Just don't reheat it too often.

I wouldn’t make it more than 1 or max 2 days in advance. Otherwise it will give you a headache.

Das kann man sicher machen aber dann ist es offiziell kein Glühwein mehr sondern ein Punsch. Ich erwähne die Möglichkeit im Blog Post, tu aber in meinen Glühwein keinen zusätzlichen Alkohol.
