Making homemade elderberry syrup from fresh, frozen, or dried elderberries is quick, easy and very affordable. But staying healthy through seasonal ups and downs can be a real challenge. Did you know that elderberry is not only a delicious fruit, but it is considered one of the premier herbs for boosting and balancing the immune system AND fighting off viruses? Also, it's considered VERY safe AND delicious! Wow!
For the full written recipe, visit the blog post here: homesteadingfamily.com/homema...
You can use elderberries in elderberry tea, or an elderberry tincture, but the most delicious way to take it is in a honey syrup! In this simple tutorial, Caroyln shows the entire step-by-step process to making this natural cold and flu remedy, and even teaches you how to can it for long-term storage.
For those kiddos under 2 years of age, we also share our favorite substitutions for the raw honey so the little ones can still reap all the benefits of elderberry.

There was a time when my husband and i were both unemployed, we had two kids and were so worried they would get ill and we would need to take them to hospital, we had elderberry bushes in our yard i made elderberry juice with the flowers and elderberry syrup with the berries. My kids, husband and i never got sick while drinking it. It is truely an amazing plant and since then wherever we live, i grow elderberry bushes. Thanks for this recipe.

Elder used to be called the "Country mans medicine cabinet" because it has so many useful properties. The flowers make a delicious cordial and the berries make a nice syrup (high in vitamin C). When I was a boy, my mother gave us kids elder cordial/syrup all year long. Sadly, its not as readily available in stores now.

I find it very interesting that you don't bring the berries to a full boil like most others do, but just to a heated simmer. It is very smart what you are doing to preserve as much of the nutrients and benefits as possible. Thanks for the great video.

people bring it to a full boil bc studies show that if you don't boil for 20-30 min then your elberberries will contain the cyanide compound and it can cause dangerous toxicity. Preventing fly isn't helpful if you are giving your family cyanide poisoning.

I'm blown away by how much you know about nutrition, plants, healing, and healthful living. Why can't this stuff be taught in schools!?? I had Home Economics in high school in the 70's and loved it, but we sure didn't learn how to use plants as medicine or how many uses for cows milk there are. So glad I found your educational videos!

Elderberries grow wild here in MO. I bought some plants last year, they are beautiful plants, lovely flowers and pretty berries. In January you cut them back to 4,to 6 inches. Take the sticks that you pruned and poke them into the ground, or container. As long as you have 1 to 2 buds below the ground level and 2 to 2 above, they sprout and grow so easy! The flower heads smell so great.

Chaga mushrooms are an immune modulator. Cordyceps are an immune booster. You should get an immersion blender. I wouldn't waste any of the berry material. About a teaspoon of dried thyme might be a great addition to the elderberry syrup. It actually increases white cell counts. It makes a decent tea on its own, too.

Elderberries grow wild in the hedgerow here (England) - birds eat the fruit and deposit the seeds everywhere...so, they really are very common. My mum always insisted that we had elderberry syrup in the house each winter when I was a child (~50 years ago) but you can't buy it now. Lots of the old remedies have disappeared off the shelves and you just can't buy them anymore. As others have said: the elder is a really useful bush (it's called the country mans medecine cabinet for a reason). You can use the elferflower (around May/June) and the berry later in the year. It makes a very nice wine too!

I strained and mashed them, added them back to the pot and added another 2 cups of water and simmered another 8 min and added more seasoning before straining/mashing a second time. I returned all of the juice to the pot, added 1/4c lemon juice and 2 cups of maple syrup, brought to a boil, and waterbath canned for 10min. It sealed properly, but with the changes I made is my syrup still safe to consume? THanks!

I'm watching this as I make our third batch of elderberry syrup for this season. I started making it with the elderberries from St Fiacres Farm I got in the bulk deal from your "Herbal Medicine Cabinet: Colds" class. My family loves it! My toddler had a runny nose recently and the run of that little cold was far less severe and she got over it quicker than we're used to. The older ones in the family have been taking a daily dose of the elderberry with the fire water and are also feeling the benefits. I've been able to up my doses when I feel a tickle and ward off any virus so I can keep caring for my family. Last year we were paying for mass produced elderberry that did not taste very good. It wasn't that effective because I couldn't get anyone to take it! Thank you so much for these lessons you've been sharing. God bless you and your family!

Andy McCurdy MAKE double share that it’s elderberry plant. I thought we had them also, but they were not. I can’t remember the name of it now but they are poisonous.☠️

Kathy Barnes, hello! I just used my steam juicer for the first time with elderberries. What is your ratio of honey to the juice? Did you put cinnamon etc into steamer part with the berries?

Add 1/2 cup raw honey for every quart of juice (or to taste).@@doublekhobbyfarm I also use my steam juicer for elderberries. This is what I add to every quart of juice: 1" cinnamon stick 1 whole clove 2 thick slices lemon 2 tablespoons fresh grated ginger Simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes with lid on. Strain

Hi. I’m in the UK. Elderberries are abundant here. They feature in mainstream OTC medicines too as ‘Sambucol’ - a treatment for colds and flu.

I thought a syrup was much much thicker. This looks very thin as if it was just water. Do you not cook it down in order to save the medicinal properties?
