How to Make Larger Than the Mat Projects with a Cricut

Did you know that you can make big projects with your Cricut machine? Today we are talking about how to make larger than the mat projects with a Cricut. This same technique will work on your Cricut Maker, Cricut Explore, or Cricut Joy. Divide a project up to mat sized pieces then assemble your project. I am using paper but this same technique will work for vinyl projects and so much more!

Helpful video! I have made larger-than-mat projects before. But a tip I learned from you today was to type in, in inches, the positions of the pieces on the mat-so the pieces butt together accurately with no overlap and no gap. Aha! Thanks kindly.

Google search 12” x 24” cardstock and a number of sites, to include Cricut, Boise, and American Crafts will pop up as well as sites that carry Cricut and American Crafts cardstocks, such as Amazon and Scrapbook.com. Warning! Can be pricey and colors may be limited, so 12x12 may be a better choice depending on what you are making! Hope this helps!

I keep having a issue with slicing , I select 2 peices yet it will not allow me to slice. I have tried this with the grinch svg for f -them kids grinch shirt. I don't know if I'm missing a step or what .

You probably have more than 2 picked and do not know it. Look in your layers panel. Are there several things in a group or attached together? You need to detach them or ungroup them before slicing.

Thanks for this! If my design is only 28 inX16 inches , can I cut the rectangles smaller or do I have to make them 11.5 x 23.5 inch rectangles ? Seems like wasting vinyl? Also any tips for using HTV for this vs regular vinyl so it pieces together exactly/

You would have to make them mat sizes. But you can use the rest of the vinyl for another project. Just cut it off after you cut the small piece you need.

Why do you need 3x24 squares since the first 2 cut, the third one is already done, right?

Yep. Technically it is. I usually do it to make sure the third fits.

uuhhh-I'm trying to do a vertical porch sign but cannot even get the "slice" option. I attached my wording, put it over the two boxes, select one box and the wording but no slice option. Any suggestions?

You can only slice if exactly two objects are picked. So are the letters each an individual shape? You will need to do one at a time.

@@AngieHolden I knew something wasn’t right because even after attaching the letters it still showed them as individual. I selected it then clicked weld. That worked so then I could select the box and wording to slice. It always gives me such trouble lol. (I didn’t realize my daughter was signed in when I commented above) loving all your videos, testing everything out-thank you so much!

I usually get mine from Cricut but yes there are other sources. 12x12 is way more common. But if you want to do this same technique for vinyl you would need to know how to do the 12x24 so I did both.

I actually just put the 12x12 pieces on the 12x24 mat and since it was already in half it worked out really well. I just attached when I removed from the mat

What did u mean by Y direction?

It says "Y" in the box I put it in on Cricut Design Space. It is a technical term but use the box labels as your guide.

The X and Y are for placing your project on the workspace, as opposed to length and width of your project itself. X refers to horizontal position, Y refers to vertical position, so if you make both X and Y equal to 4, the upper left corner of your project will be at 4” down from the top and 4” from the left of your workspace. X and Y are always where the upper left corner of your project will be on the screen, When you go to cut however, the mat will have the upper left corner at .25” and.25”. The Cricut forces a .25” margin on the mat, which although has a 12x12 grid will only cut 11.5x11.5. Hope this helps!
