Let’s try out the low-poly modelling software Blockbench! This is an information-rich tutorial for beginners (of which I am one!), because I wanted to explore the fundamentals before revisiting Blockbench for some more ambitious work in the future!

hey, nice to see you try out blockbench! just wanted to add a quick tip from someone that has used blockbench often: You can hold shift for .25 increments, and hold both ctrl/cmd and shift for .025 increments
@BJGpixel

Ooh thanks for the tip! Wow that gets to some incredibly small increments! :o
@_Guigui

@@BJGpixel yup; i mean, it's just combining both! Also might as well add: for cuboids, you can just create a normal cube then scale it to any size you want with the button next to the "create mesh" diamond (also if you right click, you can later convert it to a mesh, if needed!)

7:44 - The reason the gird didn't look pixel perfect is because the old UV map was showing, you crunched a 5 pixel tall wall into a 2 pixel tall space (when making one half of the pokeball at 3:19). When you create a new texture, the texture density is recalculated via smart UV-ing but doesn't automatically update the grid on screen which might actually be a bug.
@BJGpixel
@BJGpixel Жыл бұрын
Ah interesting, that makes a lot of sense - thanks for the insight! I'll have to keep an eye on that, and the other thing I realized later (which I didn't try yet!) was to also adjust the coordinates of the mapped faces on the UV map if I wanted to change the mapping

More than a bug it kind of make sanse too you know? Imagine one of that satisfying slime videos where the slime has a stamped image in it, if the slime gets squished or stretched the stamped image will stretch/squish with the object so, take the image as the mesh representation.

Are you referring to the flickering of certain parts of the model? It looks like a case of the phenomenon called "Z fighting" and definitely adds to the retro aesthetic!
@stevethepocket

Looks like Z-fighting to me. Which is weird since I'm pretty sure none of the pieces are overlapping, unless he accidentally duplicated those buttons and then only painted one of them properly.

Awesome introduction to Block Bench, I've never heard of this one before but it looks really nice, I like how modern the UI looks! Coming from a small Blender background, it looks like it has all the tools you'd need for making the assets it specializes in. It's incredible how great software like this are made available for free (and open source too!!) I really wish more industries with expensive software solutions would follow. 😌 The Pokeball & Dex came out looking great too! The detail with the sphere & tube is a very cool addition indeed! Also, the wireframe looked pretty crazy on the CRT! Was that the same clip earlier in the video? 😱

Thanks dude! Yeah I was impressed with how accessible this was - and fills an interesting space between picoCAD and Blender :D And yeah, that was the same animation sequence - the wireframe version has really thin lines and ended up with artifacting from filming - I was hoping to recover more detail in post-processing but really ended up being a cool effect either way!
