Hi Jim, thanks for this video. I'm having a struggle not getting lumps when I make it. I'm even putting it into a strainer and gently sprinkling a litttttle bit in at a time. I know you mixed it for a lot longer than the video shows but it seems once lumps have formed stirring won't help. Do you have any hints you could share?

Hi Marci, Many people strain the paste after it sits for a day or they strain it before they use it. I should probably make a video show how to do that. In my classroom, I used to keep several 1 gallon or 5 gallon paint strainers on hand. You can use some fine fabric if you have some. Preferably nylon. I buy paint strainers at any hardware store that sells paint. You can search on KZfaq for "How to strain the chunks and debris out of house paint." That is what I suggest. You can reach me directly if you have questions. Try Jim.Escalante @ gmail.com. I hope this helps.

Thank you @JimEscalante for posting this video. For those interested, here are some of my experiences so far having mixed a couple of batches for use as a neri substitute. First Batch: I made a half sized recipe from the video and wow did it thicken up quickly, not in seconds, but minutes, and within 2 hours it went from very thin to very thick, I was able to drip it from the spoon and have it make layers. Then over the next few hours it got even thicker, like past slime consistency to approaching a molten rubber-like consistency. Then after about 6 hours I had a very squishy, very slippery hockey puck! I then left this uncovered overnight and the consistency didn't change much, just the top portion dried a little. I tried adding more water to it, but this was cold water and I later learned that doing this can actually cause the mass to dry out, so the outer most portions remain slick, but the center begins to dry out. The next morning I tried adding hot water to my squishy, slimy, hockey puck to thin it out and it just sat in the 120F water and laughed at me!!! Lesson learned, a very little Methyl Cellulose goes a very long way!!! Second batch: I mixed 1.5 teaspoons with at first 200ml of a mixture of cold tap water and boiling hot water right from the kettle and the Methyl Cellulose mixed fairly easily. I found that it's easier to sort of sprinkle it on the surface, then wait for any clumps to disperse before stirring, if you get clumps, you can cause them to break up by drizzling a little of the liquid over them and they will spread out and dissolve evenly. Once mixed this too began to thicken quickly, so I then added another 100ml of 50/50 cold/hot water and mixed this and all seemed well for a moment, then that too began to be way too thick, so I added in another 100ml (the volume on the beaker is showing 400ml) and now as the beaker is cooling the mixture is the consistency of a thick syrup, which I assume will get even thicker over the next few hours... This time I will cover it.

@@deepdiver849 hi! maybe you bought the cosmetic grade cmc like I did on my first attempt. That mixture will not be gel even after a week. After several attempts, I got rid of that and bought a pack of food grade cmc(used in baking) which is 4x-5x the cost of cosmetic grade but you will notice that it will become gel almost instantly upon contact with water. The remaining lumps of powder will eventually vanish just after few hrs. I will also be using them on the back side of my leather, both cmc solutions that I tested seems to work, the only downside of using cosmetic grade is being so runny.

Hello Mohamed Alshishani. Thanks for the question. PVA is a white adhesive. Often people refer to it as white glue. PVA is an abbreviation for Polyvinyl acetate. Book binders often refer to it by brand name. Brands that I use are Jade, Norbond by Demco and Lenco also sells a PVA. I can also use a brand called SOBO that is sold in large craft stores. In this country schools use a white glue . But often schools use a PVA that has a higher water ratio and is not as strong. Hope this helps. -Jim

You probably eat this every day. I'm truly baffled by people that watch a video on youtube then are too lazy to do a quick search on the computer or phone they are watching the video on but would take the time to post a stupid question. "In the film Ghostbusters, the gooey substance the supernatural entities used to "slime" the Ghostbusters was mostly a thick water solution of methyl cellulose. The Aliens ooze and drip a great deal of methyl cellulose-especially the queen." "Methyl cellulose (or methylcellulose) is a chemical compound derived from cellulose. It is sold under a variety of trade names and is used as a thickener and emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products, and also as a bulk-forming laxative. Like cellulose, it is not digestible, not toxic, and not an allergen."
