@drjustinleedpt 4 жыл бұрын
Sabrina Basile whats up Sabrina! Yeah, actually I was thinking about starting a segment on lifting/personal training and how it ties in with PT. I’m noticing there are a lot more people like myself in this world! Lol I would HIGHLY recommend you get your cert. not only will you make income while being in school, but it will teach you how to strength train, something PT school doesn’t really teach you. There are soooooooo many skills I learned with my training that is sooooo valuable that PT school DID NOT teach me. I have my cert through NASM. it’s a dope company, but also ACSM is a great one too. Probably the top 2 I would recommend

@@drjustinleedpt I think a personal training/PT segment would be pretty interesting so I'm all for it. And thank you for your reply!! I'm definitely gonna consider those two certs. Having finished my undergrad in a really general topic, (bio) that could be really bland at times, I'm SO excited to be going on for physical therapy which is closer aligned to my values and interests. Adding personal training to that sphere is just like a recipe for amazing, so I'm really looking forward to it. (Also I did see that video! I think I watched it right after this one actually. Sabrina Basile awesome!! That’s good feedback and definitely something I’m interested in talking about/making videos. So maybe in the near future 🙌 yeah.... I mean bio is a good major to select for undergrad because it helps you Cirilo your prerequisite faster but honestly.... it doesn’t provide applicable life skills to the PT profession, unlike kinesiology or exercise science. BUT, it’s great that you’re taking those actions steps to pursue your personal training cert and also go down the PT road. You know I’m all for it, believe in it, and supportive of it! @drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 4 жыл бұрын
Cliff Chung thank you my man! You can still make a great living off of personal training even without the greatest GPA LOL but since you’re going back for PT school, you will have double income baby!! I think having an extra certification can help you be more marketable, but I found in my practice has a personal trainer, that having a lot of Certs doesn’t make in extreme difference. It is great to market yourself as a performance enhancement specialist, or a correct of exercise specialist (I did that) but I didn’t really find a lot of difference is when I market myself that way. It could’ve been that my marketing sucked too LOL I would also say that having additional certifications can help you stand out a little bit in the PT school application, but it is also very common to have personal training certifications as a DPT applicant What might help you stand out more or certifications that are more recognized in the physical therapy world, like the CSCS or the FMS

My plan is becoming a ACSM CPT and after my bachelor's in exercise science, I'm going for the ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification. Then save up money for DPT school, so I was wondering how clinical exercise physiology would prepare me for DPT school compared to just CPT. Also how much time or years at most should I study beforehand before I start DPT school
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 3 жыл бұрын
I think that’s an excellent idea. If you think you need time to boost your application and save money, I think having that certification can help a ton! Exercise physiology is actually covered only a little bit in pt school, but honestly you will utilize those concepts so much more in the real world. I ALWAYS consider exercise physiology when prescribing therapeutic exercise to patients. For example, if a patient is an endurance athlete, I would choose similar exercise doses to match the sport; like 3-5 sets of 15-30 reps with minimal rest vs 3 sets of 10 with a lot of recovery time. This is just one example!

But to answer it here for now, it is very common to have that certification as a TPT. And I think it is so common that a lot of employers do not really honor it as much as you think it would! This is at least from what I observed. I’m sure you can definitely use that as a vantage point to make you more desirable. If it’s possible, I would definitely try to get it during PT school because you can use your classroom units to help you in your continuing education. If this is confusing, I will go over this concept in the video to come!

DPT school is definitely demanding and will require most of your time, no doubt about that. For some students, the workload of DPT school is a big enough commitment for them. And there is nothing wrong with that. Once you start that DPT program, you’re making sure that is your number 1 priority. Personally for me, I’ve proven to myself that I am able to juggle a lot at a time while I was in undergrad. I was pushing 17 units at a time (which included 1-2 pre-reqs) and working about 15-20 hours a week, plus weekend errands. I managed to get mostly As my academics and excel in my workplace. That to me was enough to build the confidence of managing dpt school and a part time job. I took it one semester at a time and said if my grades fall, I would drop everything and focus on school. But they never dropped so I just kept adding to my plate. But one of the biggest lessons I learned while juggling all of the above was to make sure I had my priorities straight. DPT = #1. That’s the foundation. If that wasn’t strong, then all this would be for nothing. So I would say make sure you have a good grasp on your academics before starting anything. But honestly... you’ll find that you will have more time than you think haha get back to me and see if this is true for you when you start! I’m curious lol And thank you! I know you can do it!!!!
