Mike, I came across an inglenook like plan for a dockside layout in an issue of the American Model Railroad Craftsman 1967 magazine. The interesting thing was a spur off the staging yard with a turntable.

Didn't realise you had 0 gauge. Regarding budget 0 gauge there are some brilliant layouts on the exhibition scene which are small shunting layouts or a shunting layout where you can bolt other modules to it. A layout I always see on the West Midlands Model Railway show scene is one called Reely Grate. This layout can be run on it's own with a fiddle yard for ignook shunting or it can have other box modules added to it to run the trains from one section to another. I like the idea of using HO scale couplings. Very clever.

Bachmann recently announced a new line of 0-16.5 locos and wagons in RTR format so 7mm scale could see a resurgence in the coming years. An O scale harbor inglenook layout with a narrow gauge line built in has always been appealing to me. Compact but extremely detailed given its scale.

I always enjoy O gauge at exhibitions. I did consider it years (maybe 15-20) ago and had three of those Atlas locos. I have a circle of SM32 instead now. The loco I have could be configured to 32mm or 45mm gauge, but when I saw the price of 45mm rail - aaaargh! Nice to see you getting there on a budget. Cheers

The Atlas made Plymouth 0-6-0 DH could do with some buffers fitted and a paint job. You have double the O guage locos that I have, plus considerably more wagons. I have a Smart Trains battery powered GWR Holden 0-4-0T "101" and a pair of Warflat bogie bolsters. I lay the track out on the back lawn sometimes, in the summer and sit in a deck chair with a beer whilst it trundles along.

Worth considering converting to rechargeable battery and radio or even switch control. Then the quality of the track becomes less of an issue as no pick up necessary.

How about an O to On30 transfer layout? OO mechanisms and chassis for the rolling stock. Smallbrook studios and Peco have some kits available as you know.

Excellent video as always, once again showing that model Railways can be done without spending loads of money. If you venture outdoors to the shed you will need to consider insulation and also be wary of dampness, but then again there is potential to have an O gauge layout around the garden? Regarding gauges have you considered Z or even T gauge? (might need to do a review of magnifying glasses as well!)

Another informative post, thank you. Maybe consider a garden set up of some kind with O. Film some trains running and have that as an additional feature for punters to view in addition to whatever you physically display.

Love the variety on the channel. For those with limited indoor space, but more outdoors like me, a similar approach is possible with G scale. My tip for bargains is the G Scale Society meets/shows. Stuff is usually in excellent condition and there's no postage to pay which is more of an issue in large scale. I've also had good luck buying scruffy "fixer upper" locos. They're easy to work on as they're so big and parts availability is good - wiring, pickups and gears are the things which tend to go rather than the motors themselves. In my view LGB (now owned by Märklin) is best quality-wise but most expensive. Piko a close second and Bachmann a distant third. For an idea of secondhand prices, an LGB 0-4-0 steeple cab was £60, a Piko 0-6-0 steam shunter £50 and a big Bachmann Wild West style American 4-6-0 £100. All can be converted to DCC with the Hornby "Sapphire" 1Amp decoder - £10 secondhand. Coaches and wagons from £20-30. Cosmetically awful track which has been outdoors for years generally cleans up well. Condition matters much more with points. Keep up the good work!

Great vid and love the ‘presence’ that ‘O’ has. Is it possible to buy just the motor units and 3D print the bodies in ‘O’ scale? You could definitely print the rolling stock and just get (or even print the wheels), and increase the amount of rolling stock and engines. Just my thoughts 😉

Good idea the use of HO couplers in your situation : near zero cost for you, a nice stockpile at your home, and easy to fiddle around to make them working. And, for free lance (or even prototypical if you want), you can easily manufacture your own rolling stock, including engines. Only the axles are to be bought in model shops, you can get anything else (gearing, motors...) elsewhere cheaper. The Peco O track is not only expansive, it's worthless if you are space constrained : minimum radius around 1200mm... Over half this value, it's over for me, zero room available for me.

I have similar problems so I've decided to go down the 7mm narrow guage route using 00 track and converting 040and 060 locos and 00 wagons.

Suggest you build it in a modular format from the start. That way you can have it in the loft but retain the option to move it elsewhere or to a show.

This might sound a little mad... Actually making your own track in 7mm can be ridiculously cheap, and IF you know how its done, a lot easier than most people would guess. And.... the cost becomes pocket money prices. Like I said, this probably sounds insane to most people, but its just a case of knowledge.

So the layout is a budget one. Isn't that what you do. You don't owe anyone an apology for building a layout on a budget.

By todays standard, those waggons are a little rough, how ever they did serve their purpose they are, after all, toys. I love your coupling idea it is brilliant and less obtrusive than the original O gauge coupling. If you find some plain chassis, you coul knock up some couvered waggons with some plastic card and a drawing. Another idea would be is to use HO track and make 2ft narrow gauge using HO chassies and locomotives and an o gauge scale.

Would "O16.5" using OO or HO wagon chassis and track, with 'budget' O gauge wagon bodies added, work?

If arthritis kicks in, how are you going to get up into the loft. I have severe arthritis in my hands, but I can still work in N. I just take my time on loco repairs, and avoid anything Dapol.

0 gauge like to have in the garden, the problem has always cost just to much. Thanks now just maybe able to make a start on 0 gauge. On my shed layout I use carpet tile underlay just cat to size glue down with uhu the uhu the track on it, works a treat. Mike the loft videos coming

Another mythbuster! You don't need a gymnasium to have an enjoyable layout in O Scale. Shunting cars using the inglenook scheme or following American practices will give you a great time. In the modern era, it takes a US switch crew between 20-30 minutes to pick up and deliver a single car. I saw a fellow make a shunting layout in O with no points, he used a sector plate to switch between tracks... It will be interesting watching this develop. Those Atlas Plymouths run smooth and look good...

While I applaud your wish to save money , I must comment on the 02 engine is it 3D printed because it hardly represents the true 02. The reason I say that is there is no definition etc on your model . Just my point of view . Otherwise a great video
