Wonder how we can make an object disappear into a puff of smoke in DaVinci Resolve? Well, that's exactly what we are going to look at in today's Fusion particle tutorial. I have seen this effect used a lot in commercials lately. Ideally, we would want 2 videos, one with just the background and the other with the object that we want to transform to smoke, but we can still do it with just 1 video. This will also be a good tutorial to watch if you are interested in learning more about particles in Fusion. So, without further ado, let's get started!
Key Takeaways:
00:00 Effect Preview & Video Setup
01:10 Masking
02:21 Fill the Void Background and Blend
04:00 Create Smoke Effect
08:18 Continue Experimenting with Parameters

Hey VEC, i really enjoy the way you teach! You make it short although you explain the reasoning behind the notes which is one of the essential factors for people who really want to learn something beyond the specific effect. You definetly have my sub! One (hardly related) question tho. What setup/PCspecs do you use? Idk if you timelapsed the rendering parts for example but they seemed flawlessly fast (in comparison to my fusion workflow). Diving into fusion (even tho I'm used to 3D programms) really brings up the old age of my setup especially given fusions inefficiency when it comes to hardware usage.

thank you very much for the kind words and providing your feedback! i'm very happy to hear that! great question, so full disclosure, i don't have top notch specs for my Mac and the rendering part is timelapsed for the sake of the viewing experience. i have 16 GB of RAM and 8GB of graphics memory and if you are curious, there are pages on premiumbeat/blackmagicdesign/motionarray that explain the system requirements for DaVinci Resolve 18. i'd say make do with what you have until it starts to hinder your ability to do creative work. lightning fast rendering is nearly impossible especially as the flow gets complicated, so slowness is expected in many cases.

heavy effects like these require a powerful gpu, so something like an rtx 3080 or higher, rtx gpus in particular are great for these effects because of their tensor and optical flow accelerators (and their raw power too but yea)@@gorillakingmedia

thank you so much! and this is a great question, it will come with experience and time. fusion is indeed very complex, and i myself is still a novice compared to compositing artists out there. it is a lot of tutorial watching and experimenting. like you said, have fun! enjoy the process and you will know soon how to build effects yourself 👍 plus you have platforms and channels like mine where you can reach out for questions. we are all in this together.

Hey, thanks for the tutorial, this is really useful! How would you do the reverse of this? I mean have an effect where someone forms from smoke?
@videoeditingcentral
@videoeditingcentral Жыл бұрын
that's a fantastic question. well, assuming the footage remains the same, i would still the smoke first based on the subject and then manipulate the smoke effect heavily, have the viewers see that first instead, and then bring out the subjects like how the smoke was brought up in the video, so you'd pretty much still have to create the smoke first but go one step further to bring out the subject again.

Great video! I've been using Resolve for about 2 years now after switching over from Adobe for 8 years. Anyways, I'm trying to achieve this same effect in a video I'm doing but I'm very new to fusion. I've watched Casey Faris' video on intro to particles video and yours here. I need some more help even though I'm googling things along the way. I want to make a still non-moving subject disappear into smoke like this. So I feel like there are a lot of nodes you used I probably won't have to... but not sure which ones. How do I get in touch with you?
@videoeditingcentral
@videoeditingcentral 15 күн бұрын
hi, thank you! actually in your case, it'd be much simpler. instead of using the video footage, you can just replace that with your still image, or non moving subject, the rest of the nodes are the same. so basically everything up until the 4 minute mark doesn't quite apply to you : )

The tutorial is great, but what happens if there is no static image to work with? In your case, the woman is moving, but the background is the same throughout the whole video, no camera movement etc. In cases where both move, and we also don't have a clean plate of the background (person is always in front of it), how do we manage it?
@videoeditingcentral

hi, if you are experimenting with 4k 60 fps, i'd say not much change is warranted, the time of the keyframes may need to change but other than that, it's mostly the subject in the video that you want to turn into smoke.

@@videoeditingcentral interesting, spent 5 hours with no success, reinstalled davinci, could never shake the lag that happens at 5:20 ... yours plays smoothly, mine plays at 1fps per minute and shuts down the software. Using a 4 second clip at 4k , 30 fps, with a monster computer. Any suggestions?
@videoeditingcentral
@videoeditingcentral Жыл бұрын
@@Ant02496- that is very bizarre considering how powerful your computer is. well, it sounds like it has more to do with playback speed, so perhaps change the resolution to something much much lower, also when doing playback in fusion, perhaps try turning of high quality, motion blur as well, all these could potentially help with playback speed.

@videoeditingcentral
@videoeditingcentral 7 ай бұрын
hi, thank you! and that is a great question. I'd say in that case, ideally you'd want to have 2 clips, 1 with just the background and 1 with the subject. To accelerate the puff, the key would be to play with the settings in the emitter nodes. the flow itself can stay but you'd adjust the settings to fit your needds.

I made a short film "Wizard's Tales" and applied this effect ( you can see it on my channel, at the end of the film; film is 1 min.) and it looks pretty good☺. I've tried this a dozen times, and watched each piece of the video numerous times and it STILL DOESN"T WORK. If there's someone out there who can help talk through a couple of the sticking points I would love to hear where you had problems following the video. I'm a smart guy (I thought I was) and follow directions well. I've written thousands of tutorials on tech things in my career and know there's always some unintentional ambiguity or assumptions. I think there are some missing settings in this video. His settings are obviously correct (because it all works for him) and it looks like the video is one main, live take---but there might be other dependencies that were left out or assumed. For instance, I had to set the polygon node to be inverted to get a piece of it to work and I'm not sure how you'd be able to tell if the Ctrl + T to set something to the background was actually achieved or not (is that an on-off toggle). This is such a cool effect, I'd love to make this work. Can anyone help?
