Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

This is probably (in my opinion) the most important landscape tutorial that you've done. To include problem solving, decision making and seeing a process through to the conclusion really establishes a system that supports success. Thank you.

I think this is one of the BEST videos you’ve made yet. Your sketches are little gems on their own! You put a lot of helpful ideas here which are very good. The composition methodology is very helpful too. One of the masters said something like - nature is perfect, but things are never in the perfect spot. Editing and rearranging is always needed. I just got a sketchbook like that but don’t know why - now I do! Thanks for posting these videos. And yes, a podcast is a great idea!

I would like to have a tutorial where you are seen making your colors and tones on your palette while you paint a landscape or a portrait. These kinds of videos are not often shown. I love following you! Thank you! I learned to paint thanks to two artists-paintings on KZfaq and you are one of them. France

This was by far the most useful video you’ve provided us! By going over several iterations of of the aspects of light/dark, the path your eye takes, and the “star” value of the elements gave us the questions we should be asking ourselves. Outstanding video!

Really interesting to hear you talk they the whole process. I would’ve been tempted to put the fence and tree in the foreground too. I liked your finished product though and it’s cool to see how all your thumbnails and color studies lended to that final effect. Dude to be honest it would be really cool if you started a podcast. Chris, I'm glad I'm not the only person who has aggressed a canvas, haha. I might suggest using the remains of old Amazon boxes as a handy sketch pad as well. Just add a bit of white gesso and bam! Instant practice material. I will have to start doing this multi version of workup for a painting. You really reduce potential errors

One of the things that struck me was at the end how my eyes got stuck on the water in the best way. I've been to places like this and this brought immediate memories of how incredibly beautiful the color of those lakes can be. My eyes then followed the composition the way you intended but I had to laugh a little when I realized how a memory or the emotions a viewer brings to the painting can change everything. Overall a FANTASTIC video and I cannot believe how much I learned and how packed my little brain got with ideas and frankly respect. I've always considered landscapes lovely but a bit boring but I will be appreciating them more from now on. And what a fun added bonus that besides all the technical learning, I also got that emotional learning I mentioned in the beginning! All around one of the best things I've watched on KZfaq as a whole. 10/10

one of the ways to save a canvas with deformations and not throw it away. This is to write something very pasty on it, without sparing paint, then no deformations of the fibers will appear;)

This was a great video. It helped so much going through your process and constant re-evaluations. It really paid off in the final painting. I love how you changed the values and kept changing and simplifying the basic shapes to support the point of interest you had selected. I personally need to go further in working out these problems. After all, why settle for mediocre when you can achieve a really good one with a little more thought?. Thank you!

Hi Chris: Do you use glazing towards the end of your paintings to create a harmonized look if you have a lot of colours going on? I just heard about it recently and tried it today on part of an acrylic 6 x 6 painting I am working on. Apparently you can glaze sections of your painting, and leave others alone. I have read that the old masters used glazing all the time.
