How To Make Old Fashioned Lye Soap
In this video, I demonstrate how to make old fashioned lye soap. I just love making homemade soap and it’s really pretty easy. I’m showing you the basic way to make it, but it’s possible to make lye soap with different kinds of oils and scents. I even get artistic with a lot of my soap and add lots of pretty designs.
In this video, I talk about where to buy lye, what I use for molds, the difference between lard, tallow and some other oils, why distilled water works better than tap water and a lot more. I’m making cold process soap in this video, which needs to be left to dry and harden, but in future videos, I will show you other methods that are faster.
You have to be really careful with the lye, especially to make sure you never get it in your eyes. I do discuss a little about safety, but I also show you what happens if you get it on your hand - You do need to wash it off because it will burn, but it doesn’t melt your hand off right away and you can simply wash it off, but you don’t have to be afraid of it.

Also do not pour this into an aluminum pan . The lye and the aluminum will have a chemical reaction and start to get hot and boil and melt the aluminum pan . I was glad my first batch was poured up outside or I would have had a horrible mess in the house . My second batch was fine and made great soap !

I made this soap yesterday using your recipe in the link. 24 hours later it looks wonderful and has a slight soap smell. I can't wait for it to cure so I can use it. This was my first time making soap I looked and looked for a Lard lye soap recipe and yours was the simplest. I thought I would have a problem because my digital scale wouldn't weigh 3.31 it weighs 3.3 so I used the 3.3 and it seems fine. Thanks so much for this video and link!

Very controversial I know, but I would rather not have gloves or sleeves. That way if I get it on me I can step over to the sink, quickly wash it off, dry and go back to work. If it soaked in a sleeve, you have to change. If it runs down in a glove, you smear it trying to take the glove off. Goggles are a good idea.

The problem with homemade lye is you don't know the strength. I just read a book published in 1829 called The American Fugal Housewife. She explains how to tell the strength of your lye. You can read for free online. ~ Heidi

Can't see why it wouldn't. Maybe get yourself some litmus paper to keep an eye on the alkali strength. At least that's what I would do.
@bencrawshaw1227
@bencrawshaw1227 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not to sure but I think the longer you leave the ashes to soak the stronger the solution you get. So that's why I suggested that you use litmus paper to test. You could perhaps buy and test shop bought lye to give you an idea of the strength you are looking for.

@kelloggkirsten
@kelloggkirsten 4 жыл бұрын
I think you have to use a different kind of lye for liquid soap; that's what I've found from my research to make liquid castile soap. It's the "pot ash" or potassium hydroxide versus sodium hydroxide which is what is shows in this video. Unless you want the hard bard of castile soap, then use the sodium hydroxide lye.

You're probably having a reaction to the sulfate detergents found in most retail "soap" products nowadays. Look for a coconut oil soap recipe (no olive oil) with 0% superfat. Here's one for laundry soap, but it'll work as a dishwashing soap if you skip adding any scented or essential oils: thenerdyfarmwife.com/coconut-laundry-soap-stain-stick-laundry-detergent-recipe/
@kovona
@kovona 4 жыл бұрын
@serendipidus1 A properly made lye soap should have no lye remaining after the saponification process, and should have a pH around 9-10. Adding superfat helps make the soap more moisturizing and less harsh. So-call "no lye" soap or melt-and-pour soap are just soap components (like glycerin and stearic acid) that has been made beforehand through the same saponification process as lye soap, and dissolved in alcohol or propylene glycol with some extra surfactants.

(Very hard tap water can make your soap slimy, so distilled works best.) Lard - 24 oz. essential oil 1-2 oz. (optional) She has it link in the description.

Ok I will try you. No one else is answering me. I have attempted 3 times to make lye soap. The first one was still squishy after 2 days. It send to be getting harder but very slowly. The second one erupted like a volcano. After watching your video's I thought I knew what I did wrong. The first one I think I didn't use enough lye. The second I think my lye was like 40° hotter than my oil. My 3rd one seemed to be doing well my lye water and oil were both 110°. Give or take a few degrees. The mixing went well and seemed to be holding up. I went outside to do yard work for a few hrs. When I checked on it again it had cracked all the way down the center and is pretty hot again. Any clue what is going on??????
@LivingOnADime
@LivingOnADime 4 ай бұрын
Your lye and oils are too hot. Try bringing the temp down to 80 for both and then sees what happens. If it volcanos that ok. Just pour it back in the bowl and keep stirring it until it turns to soap and cools down....about 5-10 mins. or so. It's still just fine to use after it cures for 30 days.

Lard is just cheaper than olive. If you want big lather, use about 5% castor oil in the recipe.

+Jasminn Navarroo Yes, you can use olive oil, coconut oil or any combination of vegetable oils you want. You can just look up some recipes and pretty much any will work.

Once it goes through saponification the lye is changed/used up, it's just soap. Ivory soap is plain old lye soap ☺️

That's the unsaponified soap. It burns like crazy if it gets on your skin. Once it hardens, it has gone through a chemical change. Now the lye is no longer lye.

Anyone watching this-DO NOT USE SOAP IN YOUR LAUNDRY!! Unless you physically scrub your clothes like they did in the olden days it will gunk your clothes and they will never get clean!
