In this video, I use different materials to create different surfaces for pastel. Materials: Illustration board (or wood panel); clear gesso, regular gesso, fine pumice gel, and pastel ground. You also need some tape and brushes.
Enjoy!

SUMMARY Green = acrylic color base, once dry then layered with clear gesso pastel red = regular gesso + acrylic color mixed, then paint using the mix dark brown = fine pumice gel mixed with acrylic color, then paint using the mix light brown = pastel ground mixed with acrylic color, then paint using the mix Result green: works really well with soft pastels and pastel pencils! pastel red: smoother, still workable but not as good as green. pastel pencil = not bad dark brown: nice for soft pastels, pastel pencil works but not as enjoyable as green light brown: very nice for soft pastels even better than green, very good for pastel pencil So far boxes no 4 and 1 are much preferred box no 2 will do good if perhaps mixed with a little bit of pumice gel

Thank you once again Cuong, very useful information for those of us who like to work in both soft pastel and pastel pencils. Would love to see one of your portraits drawn on the the two you chose as your favourites. We are more used to seeing you draw on Senellier Grey paper.

I've used watercolor paper, then acrylic paint and then clear gesso before for my pastel paintings but I didn't like the surface. It was too gritty for me. I tried many different techniques for applying the clear gesso to try to get the right texture. I even sanded it a tiny bit but I never could get the texture the way I wanted it. So now I just use Uart 500 grit sanded paper. lol

Thank you very much for this video, appreciate it very much. As a total beginner this is very helpful. I started off with some local papers that are labelled as Pastel paper but it was very frustrating to use pastel on that. And Pastelmat is expensive for learning. Have one silly question, do we get to use some amount of water? Pastel ground, Is that advisable?

@@CuongNguyenArt I think this is not only good for people who can't find good pastel paper, but also people who are new to pastels and just needs time to practice. Hard to justify the cost of the good paper when you are just starting out and need to practice. This is a very economical way to create pastel surfaces. Thanks.

Thanks for this but why did you do the clear gesso and regular gesso differently? You put the color separately from the clear gesso but you mixed the regular gesso with the paint. Does it matter? Will it have the same result?

I have the acrylic ground in a golden tester set but they all dried out to a thick almost solid substance. Do you know if it can become liquid again with paint thinner or something like that? Great demonstration btw. I think I'll get clear gesso as its most affordable :)

Not really. Acrylics is basically plastic. Once is set, that's basically it. Make sure the container is tightly sealed.

I made a small research in wet canvas and they said about the properties of baking soda (it is alkaline) so it is not stable to use as a priming for oil painting (good surface but it probably will crack) because of the acid properties of the oil, so I think it's better not use it as a primer (gonna make the experiment anyway, if something happens... well, someday I'll say what) But in pastels the main binder is arabig gum so it might not be a problem. The surface is just like fine to medium grain sandpaper but more irregular, it will depend of how much baking soda you add, but in same proportions (gesso + baking soda) the mixture is grainy, but in the paper when dries some dust fall apart, so I added more gesso (about 75/25) and it feels like I mentioned before, sandpaper. I never used a good quality paper for pastels, but in comparison with canson mi-teintes it is a lot better (I primed a cheap fabriano ingres paper 160 gsm) it accept layers so well (I used Rembrandt's and Conte's hard and soft pastels) they doesn't smear between them nor mix between layers. They blend ok, the grain is irregular but it works well, I fully recommend to try it Btw, sorry for the grammatical issues, yo hablo mexicano ¡Saludos!
