Making spices from scratch was something I didn’t even realise was possible! Turns out that not only is it possible but it’s also incredibly easy and you don’t even need fancy equipment! In this tutorial I’ll show you how to dehydrate fresh herbs and vegetables in a regular oven!
But just because you can make powdered spices from fresh ingredients, is it even worth the effort? ABSOLUTELY!
Regular herbs and spices you can buy from the supermarket are complete weak sauce in comparison to homemade spices & seasonings. Once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever seasoned your food without it!
Not to mention, you’re not limited to standard seasonings and spice blends - if you can dehydrate it, in theory you can make almost any food into a powdered spice! Using this basic technique you can learn how to make your own powdered seasoning out of pretty much anything.
Including scotch bonnet pepper! Seriously this stuff is lethal but oh so good, especially if you’re a lover of spice.
So here’s how to make your own spices from scratch!

You can dehydrate them outdoors in hot countries. Leave them on a tray, under the sun for a few days.

Next time try onion, carrot and celery. I have a quart-sized jar that I use to add to so many of my recipes! It adds such depth and richness to sauces and soups! And it makes the house smell delicious! :-)

Thank you for this, beloved sister. I've been finding ways to make everything from scratch. It saves a TON of money and it's WAY healthier. I've been looking for a way to make my own spices now that i have a dehydrator. Big thumbs up for this one.

Brilliant!!! I'm definitely going to try this. Can you make powdered beetroot using the same method?
@WholeElise
@WholeElise 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I'd cut the beetroot into pretty small piece - around the same size as the peppers because it's a denser vegetable so it'll take longer to dehydrate but it'll work just as well! 😊

How long do these spices last? I want to make it in large quantities.
@WholeElise
@WholeElise 4 жыл бұрын
Great, I'm glad you'll give it a try! If they're fully dehydrated, they'll last as long as regular spices - usually around 2 - 3 years, although I usually run out before I get to that point! 😅 If you store them away from sunlight in a tightly sealed jar it'll prolong their shelf life.

@WholeElise
@WholeElise 3 жыл бұрын
They should last as long as any store bought spices (between 2 - 3 years), as long as you manage to completely dehydrate the spices you shouldn't have any problem with the shelf life. Although I've always run out before then lol. Thanks for watching 😊
