Here's a tip: if it's gonna be a stencil you want to re use (like your own band's logo) make it out of that thin, clear laminating plastic stuff, that way it won't bleed because it doesn't have pores, and it won't rip easily

Hey guys, I just want to say thank you for all of the love on this video. I never thought at all it would get this many views, I never intended it to. I have a lot of people asking me to make more, so I just want to say something. I don't usually make videos unless I'm super into it, and only if it's something I do. I don't want to make a half-assed video of something I don't really know just for the sake of making a video. I hope that makes sense. I am working on a new vest, so I might see about doing something with that. Much love guys and gals, thank you for all your support. Glad you all enjoyed it.

hey i have a question: do the patches survive the washer if you do it with normal acrylic paint? nice vid btw
@nickbagelboy
@nickbagelboy 8 жыл бұрын
jasperfolks 2000 Don't fully rely on my word for it, because it can be different for everyone, BUT, I've thrown my coat in the washer a few times and all the patches on it came out just fine. I've not noticed any fading in them or anything. But if you're really hesitant about it, best bet is to just throw some paint on a piece of cloth (a good amount of paint) and safety pin it on a piece of clothing and throw that in the washer. Always use cold water, too.

When I make my patches I use a spray adhesive on the back of the stencil. You don't need much. Just sprays light coat of it then put it on the fabric and press it down. It stops bleeding and gives you a very crisp look. I advise you use it outside and be careful about it getting everywhere. Once you are done let it sit for a couple minutes then pull it off. Works every time.

Hey! If you print the image onto the paper side of freezer paper then you can iron the waxy side to the cloth. The wax forms a seal that prevents bleeding.

OK - 2 things.. 11:53 - the reason why ur ink is bleeding is ur not using a *screen* (or tightened headscarf around a frame, piece of old silk curtain in a needlepoint ring, etc..) w/a *squeegee*(or ur plastic letter stencil 'ruler') - look up silk screening/printing for specifics on that.. & 14:52 - its much easier to just *'snip & rip'* to get a straight perimeter to ur patch that won't fray down the road nearly as bad(also slightly burning the edges on some thicker materials works great against fraying - *MAKE SURE TO TEST THIS FIRST ON A PIECE YOU WONT USE* ).. ... ..& *certain wax &/or spit* can do AMAZING waterproofing!! ;) ... & 19:06 - to fix ur jacket's stud symmetry problem'?? - spaced out *circled* studs... ...but it looks fine as it is :) Hope that helps!! :D *edit: included to look up silk screening/printing & burning edges to stop fraying

When I have something really nice I want to make a patch out of, I like to embroider instead of use a stencil and paint. It may take a while, but the quality is way higher and it has a satisfying texture/3d look to it. It takes some practice though, so don't expect to get it right your first time.

Keep it alive man!! I know this is a few years old but this vid was dope. Def change up the paper, use like a wax paper and make sure edges are taped down on the shirt, i dig the weird blob-ness of it though, you can def go over and define it with black fabric ink. Also, DENTAL FLOSS!! Learned that from some train hoppers // in crust we trust

heya, in your vid you asked if anyone had tricks to make your stencilling go easier. my tips are: instead of using a roller use a sponge cos it tends to not get pushed under the stencil so much, also it is possible to stick down the stencil with a spray on textile glue which helps with the same thing, don't use too much paint, use old x-rays or similar thin plastic sheets and print the design straight on to it so you don't have to cut it out twice. good work though, keep it up.

tape your picture to some styrofoam, and trace the non-black parts with a wooden stick (sharp for tiny details). put paint on it (with a roller) and press it on to the fabric. (this was a technique I did in art class and it turned out well. hopefully, it'll work well on fabric.)

You can definitely use white paint on black fabric. Just make sure the paint isnt too watered down and make sure you put on multiple layers, letting the previous ones to dry

I LOVE this video! when i was younger i tried doing patches the way you did them in this video by tracing and cutting the image out of cardstock or thick paper of some sort, it wasnt working and as the paper got wet with paint it ended up ripping, i was so annoyed with that and the outcome of the project after. thats when i discovered Freezer paper!!!!! honestly it works wonders on everything!!!! i trace the image out onto the paper and then cut it out and iron it onto the fabric, then paint ontop of it and peel off the paper. it gives you super crisp lines and the paint doesnt bleed through. one side of the paper has this super thin kind of waxy coating on it but when you peel the paper theres no wax on your design. you can buy big rolls of it by the tin foil and plastic wrap section of walmart or any grocery store for super cheap and it lasts a long time and you can make real big peices with it. i would definetly consider freezer paper especially if you want really crisp lines and if your a perfectionist like i am and i want my designs to be the exact way i see them like band logos or pictures like you said in the video. hope that helped

Awesome video man! I was gonna say if you don't want that bleed through from the stencil try using freezer paper. Iron it on your piece of fabric and the plastic side will bond and create a barrier between your stencil and the fabric. It works awesome for bleach designs too. Thanks for the vid man!

Just came across this video. You asked for responce in regards to stencils. Try a pouncing brush. Its thick dence stiff brissels and round allow to give you more control. Also you can purchase liquid paint medium at craft stores in the craft paint section ,will keep acrylic from washing out .Just dip or pounce straight up and straight down. Remove the paint on dry clean paper towel by pouncing straight up and down quickly and light pressure. Then go directly to your stencil and pounce up and down. Do not brush side to side or it will leach or bleed under stencil. Great tutorial and thanks for sharing.

Good informative video, i usually print with a screen but i was looking for a quick and easy backup for when i want to just print 1 or 2 patches without burning a screen. This does the trick. Btw, I think white ink for faces doesn't look right because shadows on faces are generally darker and that is what usually 'shapes' the face. I've done a lot of figure drawing and it would make sense that it wouldn't look as great because people always associate darker-shadows and lighter-highlights. Thanks for the tip!

Have tryed putting clear tape like tape on the back of the stencil and use an adhesive to stick it the the patch so it doesn't bleed through paper or the edges of the stencil
@nyannayn80
@nyannayn80 8 жыл бұрын
The way I avoid bleeding is by using freezer paper, may take longer because you can't keep the freezer paper stencil (it will take an extra reapplication step for every new patch). Make sure each coat is pretty dry before you apply the next one. I am an impatient person so I put a blow dryer on cold setting and help the paint dry.

I actually learned that a good way to prevent paint from going under the stencil is to use spray adhesive on the stencil before you put it on the fabric! You spray it on in a well-ventilated area (preferably outside), wait for it to dry about halfway (until it's tacky), and then rub it onto the fabric until it's stuck on. It should peel off suuuper easily, and none of the paint will go under the stencil!

hey a really good way to make it not bleed less close to none us freezer paper! they sell it in big rolls at grocery stores, it has plastic/wax stuff on one side, and all you need to do is cut out your stencil an place it wax side down, then with a clothing iron with no water in it, iron it on! the stencil will stick on and when I've used it i put lots of layers and it still didn't bleed. you just have to make sure its really stuck on to the fabric, then it just comes off nice, the only down side is you can't re-use it after

If you wanted to stop bleeding and get sharper edges you need to tape the stencil down or clamps ect there's a lot of movement going on that's why it's happening . Another thing that would help it's doing a base paint (undercoat) so it doesn't soak into the fabric and blead that way

whoa, this' way awesome!! i've actually found that the only way to make non-bleed-y patches is to either screen print them or to use freezer paper. unfortunately with freezer paper you can only reuse the stencil a couple times before it craps out, but if you don't mind that it's a pretty solid method. as for screen printing, i know it can be expensive but Threadbanger has a good tutorial on how to make your own screen. or you could even attach the paper stencil to the bottom of the screen so you don't have to make a new screen every time! (if that makes sense haha) again, really awesome video!

I use really small and thin pieces of masking tape on the edges of the stencil to avoid bleeding. This has worked very well for me and I've been able to create very detailed patches. I paint them with a paintbrush, and I try to paint away from the egdes of the stencil, so the paint doesn't get under it. ps. I use regular printer paper for the stencils I make, so I'm not sure if the masking tape will work with other materials.

I hear freezer paper works really well. I guess you can iron it onto your fabric, the only problem is I think it is a one use thing.

so it doesny blead through, put double sided tape all around the design so it doesnt move and then paint it (i use a brush and acrylic paint) and start painting the edges. start on top of the sctual stencil and then onto the fabric (idk how else to say it) this also works with circles so you dont have to do the military thing style.

I used to do that in my younger days. It worked out perfectly. Younger days = Mid to late '80's. I'm 55 now and still appreciate people's DIY stencil projects/art/fashion.

If you would use some more expensive paint for fabric, one cote of paint is already enough so the stencil doesnt move while doing several cotes

hey man. I have a question. so I have a grey vest and I made a couple patches not to long ago and I used acrylic paint on some old cut off t shirts. but my question is If I put my jacket in washer will the paint wear off?
@nickbagelboy
@nickbagelboy 8 жыл бұрын
+Rayne C Honestly, I don't think so. It might fade a tad, but it won't completely run off. I've used acrylic with most of my patches and T-Shirts and I throw my shirts in the washer constantly. They've faded a bit, that's normal, and a few cracks here, but I couldn't imagine something as small as a patch would have much effect from it. I'm no expert, I'm just going from what I have personally done, so don't quote me 100%. But one thing, if it does fade a bit, you can always re-paint it. Just don't use any bleach in the washer. :)

+✌Little✌Dircetioner✌ Haha possibly, dude(t)!! If I find something else to make I might make a vid on it depending on how well I can do it. And (wo)man, I always try to respond to each comment. I like all genres, actually. Not a big metal fan, but I can definitely fuck with it and respect it. And in terms of rock, if I had to pick, I'd pick some Rock N Roll from the 50's era.

hey, just wondering, does the poppy on your denim jacket symbolise anything to you? it's just that here in the UK they are a symbol of remembrance for those who've died in wars, and I was wondering if other countries have the same thing.
