How to make required fields in Trello

Because nobody listens when you politely ask them to update info before moving a card to the next list.
Although Trello Custom Fields (and other core components) don't actually come with a built in way to mandate or require them to be filled out before going to the next stage of the workflow, with some automation you make it happen. Just do what I do and create a rule so that any card that moves into a list and is missing a field value gets moved back to the old list, warning labels added to it, and the person who moved it gets a nice ping saying "please fix this" 😊.
UPDATE: Figured out the OR part if you want to require more than one custom field! Just use this trigger and swap out "two" and "three" with your field names, and put the whole regex:/.*(two|three).*/ (no quotes) in the custom field section.
When a card without custom fields "regex:/.*(two|three).*/" completed is added to list "Doing" ... (then add whatever actions you want.)

Hey Brittany, Do you know how to create a card as a template card when a new card is added to the board? for ex, whenever I add a card to-do list I need it to be added as a template card automatically.

You can use automation rules to say that when a new card is added to the board do the things to the card that you would on a template card. For instance, when a new card is added to the board, assign x members, add x checklist(s), etc

Yeah! Trello actually made an update since i created this video. If you click the filter button on "when a card is moved to list" trigger, you'll see in the Fields section there first action is "with all custom fields completed" (you can change with to without).

Hello Brittany - do you know how to send an email (containing a few custom fields) and then trello picks them up using wildcards?

Yes! You can do this in a couple of different ways. You can use Trello automation to create an action for sending an email, and then you can reference custom fields like this {{%Start Date}} - more details here: support.atlassian.com/trello/docs/working-with-custom-fields/#custom-field-variables You could also use something like Zapier to send an email! This is a good topic for a video, so I might actually make one dedicated to just this very topic! Will try to make it over the weekend and send you a link soon!

That would be ace? So I am trying to send an email to Trello. And before I send it I would like to add my opinion on what Strategic time ‘Horizon’ the concept in the email falls into - my drop down custom fields are Now, 3 years, 7 years. These are the custom fields in trello. I have tried using various formulas in automation, but just keep failing! It would be amazing if you could solve this!

@@graemecopestake894 ohhhh sending an email TO trello, or FROM trello? If you mean TO, that's still possible but a different video than i was thinking 😂 How do you want the custom fields populated? walk me through a scenario... you get an email, and you want to create a new card in trello with that email and the custom field "horizon" should be what?

@@britt_joiner 😀 so. A client or colleague send me an idea on email. I then think I need to develop that thought so I email it to my board. This is where I want add the ‘Horizon’ of Now, 3 years, 7 years. So I add that in the body of the email somewhere before I forward to my unique trello address So when the ‘card’ is created in Trello (when it arrives) it has my custom fields ready to go. Does that help?

@@graemecopestake894 yes that does!! i will think on this and make a video. one more question - do you want to be able to do this on mobile as well? Or if i could find a solution to do it with a chrome extension in your browser would that be enough? I have a couple ideas, but the simplest i can think of us a quick extension with PixieBrix, but i might be able to come up with something with Zapier. Possibly can do it with native trello automation, but i think it will be tough. Willl play around with it, but just want to make sure i come up with a solution that works for sending emails from your phone as well if you need that!
