In this video I show you how I made reusable draw string produce bags for buying loose veg plastic free. I used 1m by 1.5m calico (100% cotton - semi-processed undyed and unbleached), cotton string, a wool needle, cotton thread, fabric scissors, pinking shears and my John Lewis JL110SE sewing machine. I made 2 longer narrower bags for celery/cucumber/leaks etc, 2 medium square bags and 2 small square bags.

Waste Less thanks! I love it so much! I got it from John Lewis with tokens that the Samaritans gave my husband (who volunteered on their phones) and I for our wedding - it is so pretty! Xx

I'm starting the zero waste lifestyle and I'd like to know what measurements did you use for your different size bags. Thank you kindly :)

Hi Martha - that’s a good question but I didn’t measure I just cut out pieces of different sizes - I would guess that the largest was from a piece of fabric about 24 inches by 8 inches (60cm x 20cm) and the smallest was probably 6 inches by 12 inches (15cm x 30cm) - I would measure the things you normally buy - for example the type of bread would make a difference (long thin baguette or wide round loaf), or cucumbers/leeks/celery etc - I hope that helps! Xx

Where in the UK do you live Lizzie? It’s great finding other British zero wasters. I’m in Lincolnshire.

Lizzie Dean Makes ooh I’m in Oxfordshire too! Can I ask where you tend to buy your groceries? I’m struggling to find stuff without plastic...

I found the West Oxford Food Coop - I did a video on that a while back - and a plastic free shop in Stroud called Loose which I visit periodically, I also use www.zero-waste-club.com online. On top of that I shop at my local town market for fruit/veg and bread. Everything else I shop around between the supermarkets. My technique worked well while I was able bodied and had time - it isn’t suitable now I am disabled, and wouldn’t work for people with limited time to shop, or who have to drive far between shops (in my town we have three big supermarkets all within 100m of each other so you can walk/cycle). Good luck! Xx

Hi Abdul, thanks for reaching out - I don’t make them for sale I’m afraid - but I am sure a local seamstress would be able to make them for you. Thanks for watching! Xx

I love the vid but too much talking. Edit it down to at least 10 minutes or so.

Thanks for the comment Steff. I do try and edit my videos as short as possible without losing the message - but it is harder for me than for most as I suffer with a chronic illness with a symptom called transient aphasia (which makes it very hard for me to string a sentence together) - if you notice me taking lots of pauses in between words or “um”ing a lot that is what is happening. Unfortunately it is quite hard to edit my slow speech out so sometimes I seem to talk for ages without saying very much. I will try and script my videos a bit more to keep them concise - but if you could also bear with me I would appreciate it so much! Xx
