I’ve been sewing for years, with no training, no tips. Loved your machines, and your simple finishing tips. Very professional looking bags. I have an old singer 403 special. Bags at the store are no longer provided in Colorado. I purchased 2 that looked more durable, but they fell apart quickly. I’m about to make a couple bags, with fabric leftover from a chair seat i recovered. I’m also going to line them, as it’s a 3 hour drive round trip to the grocery store. I enjoyed your tutorial.

Oh, your videos are just what I've been looking for! I just acquired almost a hundred pieces of new upholstery fabrics and want to make something useful from them. Your directions are perfect for me and I already have the webbing. You made it 'sew' easy! Also, I subscribed to all your videos because I don't want to miss a one of them. I wish I could work a nap into my busy schedule but I don't think my employer would allow it right now. I've been sewing for over fifty-seven years and hope to retire from my day job in a few months. That's when I'll do nothing but sew and nap all I want. 😄 Thanks, Brenda

Oh this is good! Im now teaching a 17 year old couple, boy and girl. Im so glad they were inspired to learn. I sell jean bags and remade shirts etc. at a tiny market in a town of 2,000. Motst jobs here are retail part time for the tourist industry. In only 2 lessons they are catching on fast. Introducing them to the sewing machine first. I was looking for a very simple bag tutorial to not confuse them with extra details. This one will help!

I will be very glad when/if they outlaw those single use, plastic market bags here in Kentucky. The recycle center will not accept them. Someone could earn a good living making reusable, repairable, and washable market bags (if there was a market for them). After a wind storm, it is strange how many of those bags appear out of nowhere. It doesn't take long to pick them up; but, most people will not. Every now and then, my purchases are put in a brown paper bag. I hang on to that bag (because there are so many uses for them).

Hi Christine love all your videos, long time watcher first time I’m going to make some bags. I just recently got some samples but they are more like a velvety texture do you use this type of sample? Also I have an overlocker but am usually scared of it as I have trouble threading it. Do you have any videos to show this? I also get a bit lost as I’m a patchworker for over 15 years and usually sew with quarter inch seams, I don’t know where to look if I’m not doing straight work, do you have any tips you could add to your videos. For example especially on an overlocker not sure where the seam is. I know how to use the guides on the sewing machine but you can’t always see the guide. Do you ever visit Melbourne? Let me know I can put you onto a few good places to shop for fabric. Also what measurements do you use for your differential feed for the overlocker with the thicker fabrics. Learnt the hard way about this when sewing thinner slippery fabric and machine chewed it up. Was left in that state ever since… Cheers Jodie
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 5 ай бұрын
Hi Jodie. Yes, I visit mum in Cranbourne, and my boys in the west. Should be going in the next week or so. Differential feed depends on the fabric I'm sewing, but as most of it is woven fabric, I generally leave it where it was when I got it. If I need to change the feed, I'll test it out on scrap fabric of the same type, and make adjustments as needed. I do plan on some overlocker videos, but just haven't found the time yet. I'm also a patchworker for about 15 years (had a quilt store for some time). I'd use the velvety material the same way I use the upholstery fabric samples that I have, but would use some kind of stabiliser to help the bags sit up better.😀

Hi Christine, great video. Any chance you can go through shipping? There’s not many shipping videos relating to Australia. That’s the main reason I put off selling online, working out the weights, etc. or do you just have a flat shipping rate? I’d also love to know if you’ve ever sold on Etsy and if so, how it compares to Made It. I don’t ask for much do I 😆
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 9 ай бұрын
I don't really have a formula for shipping Leigh. I try to package everything as lightly and cost effectively as I can. My website has software built in that works out the shipping costs, but that's based on the weight of the item😁

Just a question, wouldn’t it be quicker to fold up the bottom of the bag instead of making the pointed corners to get a flat bottom?. Wouldn’t the results be pretty much the same. ( obviously I haven’t done this method, but I’ve watched several videos, so that make me an armchair expert🫣)
@ChristinesHomeAffairs

Hi Christine, I am very new to sewing and I used to have a singer machine that actually had a built-in surgery and was amazing. I now have a juki that I love but it does not have a built-in serger nor do I have a serger. When you say you can use a zigzag stitch instead I’m a bit confused and embarrassed and feel dumb because this is probably a ridiculous question, but am I putting the front and the back pieces together and using the zigzag stitch to combine them or am I literally using a zigzag stitch to stop freeing or something else and juststitching each piece at a time? Is this too confusing lol.

Hi Stephanie. Never be afraid to ask questions, or think they're dumb. We've all been new to things at some stage in our lives, and we learn from asking questions and making mistakes. I make plenty. You don't have to serge the edges, but on your regular machine, you can just sew the seam as you normally would, and then, if you have a zigzag on your machine, go over those side seams again with a short but wide zig zag. This will help prevent edges from fraying. Hope this has helped😊

Hi Christine, do you pre-wash your upholstery fabric before you make your bags? your videos are great, love your approach

Hi Stephanie. No, I don't prewash any fabric unless it's something to be worn or if it smells bad. The bags are washable though😀

Is there a link for this exact same bag but with a liner fabric? I have a LOT of quilting fabric (I just like buying fabric) and I usually make just a zipper pouch or two from whatever I buy. Quilting cotton is not sturdy so I’d like to make it with a liner and fusible fleece stabilizer. I have a LOT of these materials. I love your channel. You’re easy to listen to and learn from. I thank you, from Tennessee. 😊

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs oh my thank you! I did a search after I commented and found it and I made my first lined tote bag! My first tote bag ever actually. Thank you!! I added fusible fleece on the outer fabric and even though I am just a novice sewer, it turned out perfect! I was amazed! It literally looked store quality. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your talent. It’s a blessing to be able to learn from youtube. I would not be able to do this (sew) without people like you.

Love your videos but a bit confused about your fabric for this bag. I wanted to make some for a craft show. Upholstery fabric is there more than one kind? The kind I’ve seen is woven and constantly fray yours doesn’t seem to do that. I would love to hear your thought on this so I can get the right kind of fabric. Thank you in advance.

Hi Marlen. There are loads of different types of upholstery/furnishing fabrics available. This is more like what you would find for a sofa, or their cushions. I can make these bas with any fabric, but for something sturdy, you could use denim, duck, drill, or anything else that is heavy duty. I do occasionally get some that fray quite a bit, but make sure I overlock/serge them well😀

Love the video, but can you tell me what kind of cotton thread you use to sew the bag together with. People talk about the material but not the thread. I have some cotton material and cotton thread, do I need to buy say quilters cotton thread any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 8 ай бұрын
Sylvia, cotton thread is good for quilters that use only cotton fabric in their quilts. I use gutterman sew all thread. It's a polyester thread. Just regular weight. If I feel it needs more strength, I double stitch. Cotton thread will break down too quickly

I recently received 2 totes of upholstery fabric. Some is vinyl. Do you think this could be used for the straps in lieu of the webbing? I'm concerned it will stretch or warp.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 7 ай бұрын
Sally, I'd probably use the same fabric for the handles instead. I've done vinyl handles befores, and some twist and stretch, but that would have been incorrect sewing too🤣

I just wanted to ask why not serge and cut the corners?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 6 ай бұрын
When I first made these, they were intended as a replacement for plastic shopping bags. I wanted to keep as much strength in the bags as possible as they carry a lot of weight. Cutting and serging would cause the corners to bulge outward, and then weaken the seams😊
