In this video I show you a super simple zero waste diy to make liquid soap from bar soap. My husband really missed having body wash in a bottle so I researched how to make shower gel - and it turns out it is really easy! For this project you will need a bar of soap, a cheese grater, a big bowl or pot to make the liquid soap in, a measuring jug, a set of kitchen scales to weigh your bar of soap (it may just say the weight on the packet - my bar was a 200g paper wrapped bar from Sainsbury’s), a funnel, a kettle, a wooden spoon and a clean empty container to put your liquid soap in to store, as well as a bottle to use in the shower. I put my liquid shower gel into a bathroom hand pump soap dispenser as we have two empty ones we were given, but you could just repurpose an old squeeze shower gel bottle from the recycling bin if you have one, or any plastic/glass jar or bottle.

I made liquid soap which started with a very thin palm sized bar from a hotel. It gave me a 1/2 gallon pickle jar full and it was very thick. When I used it it was "snot" like and we never enjoyed it like the store bought. When we finished that (1 year later) I got dr. Bronners liquid castile soap and put about 1/8 C to 12 oz water in a foaming soap pump for handwashing. No one seemed able to fix consistency of the homemade liquid soap.
@LizzieDeanMakes
@LizzieDeanMakes 6 жыл бұрын
So “snot like” I had at first when it was whipped but once it settled it was gel like in consistency. Apparently adding glycerin helps with consistency issues. Perhaps if you get a foaming soap dispenser that would be closer to what you were after? Xx

You can use any soap you like - SLS free soaps will work - have you looked up making your own cold process soap? Essentially it’s just oils (e.g. olive oil or coconut oil) which you mix with a lye and water solution to cause the chemical process of saponification which turns the oils into soap - you don’t need to add any sodium laurel sulphate (SLS) so it’s as natural as possible. You need to use gloves and a well ventilated area as lye is quite noxious - but there as some great online tutorials - it might be an idea for you if you want to make chemical free soaps in bulk xx

@LizzieDeanMakes
@LizzieDeanMakes 4 жыл бұрын
If you have a PH tester then you can use it to check that the PH is still alkaline (usually around 9-10) - in which case mould will not develop and you do not need a preservative, but if you do decide to use a preservative you can add vitamin E oil. I hope that helps xx

If the PH is acidic enough then it won’t mould - but as you are adding water its important to check that or the stagnant water can cause problems. I don’t know about it lasting more than a year - if it doesn’t appear to have any mould and the PH test is within the same range it was just after you made it then it may be fine - I couldn’t say 100% though xx

I don’t know - I think you have to be careful putting soaps in the washing machine as you can end up with a bubble explosion (like when people put fairy liquid in a water feature fountain) - but I know people make their own washing soda crystals From bicarbonate of soda - I think that you bake it in the oven to turn it into soda crystals - and you can use those to wash clothes and dishes in machines xx

how if add koh after finishing bar soap. to make it liquid
@LizzieDeanMakes
@LizzieDeanMakes 4 жыл бұрын
If you are making soap from scratch you would use KOH (which is essentially a type of lye) in order to produce the chemical reaction known as saponification. In this recipe you are using ready made bar soap which has already been through that process so you don’t need to add any lye - you simply dilute the bar soap with water xx

@LizzieDeanMakes 3 жыл бұрын
When making bar soap the oils will probably go through saponification but with this method that doesn’t happen so be sparing at first as it could end up greasy if you add too much, but yes you could add anything you like. If you get litmus paper and check the PH of the final liquid soap you will be able to tell if it’s ok - it should be between 9 and 10.5 ideally - and that helps preserve it and prevent mould etc from forming. Vitamin e will help preserve it too. Good luck! Xx

Intrigued by the shelf life being a year without a preservative added. Bar soap has moisture driven out through curing and usually has no preservatives. Any liquid where the major proportion is water should have a preservative added to avoid microbial activity. I would suggest that anyone doing this adds liquid germall plus to avoid any issues.
@LizzieDeanMakes
@LizzieDeanMakes 3 жыл бұрын
It’s actually down to PH and bacteria being unable to grow - liquid soap like this should have a PH between 9 and 10 so mould spores cannot thrive in it. As a result no additional preservative measures are required. If you want to test the PH of your finished liquid soap you can buy litmus test strips online which are very cheap, and if you want to add additional preservative measures you could add vitamin E oil. Xx

@@LizzieDeanMakes www.ultimatehpsoap.com/post/do-i-need-to-use-a-preservative-in-liquid-soap-learn-about-microbes-water-availability-and-more highly recommend a read of this. The only time a liquid soap is microbe safe is at the gel stage and not when water added. Even distilled. Yiu be added tap into this and this is a major constituent- it NEEDS a preservative or it’s dangerous. You could it sell this in the UK because of the risk and it’s important that anyone making it at home knows the risks. Also vitamin e only stops rancidity in oils and not in water. There are plant basted preservatives too.

Not personally but I can’t see any reason why not - just make sure you follow the advice on the EO bottle about how much to dilute it - and check the PH to make sure it doesn’t effect the longevity of the soap (by neutralising the PH and allowing mould to grow) or make it caustic or anything when used on the skin (soap normally has a PH of 9-10) xx

One thing I have found is that (and this is probably because we're using bar soap here and shower gel is intentionally formulated to be extra sudsy) but the soap slime doesn't lather very much. It still cleans but I used to use a rough mitt with shower gel before and the gel lather would buffer the roughness of the mitt. Now I can't. There's not enough lather and the mitt is too rough. So I use the slime to clean myself with my bare hands. Unfortunately as a result there's less scrubbing effect. There's always a trade-off. I'm also using a lot more volume of the slime than regular shower gel, so I don't know how long it will last. Still at 50 cents for 2 quarts of the slime vs. $6 for 1/2 quart of the gel, well you get the cost idea. Still I wish there were something I could add cheaply to make it suds more.
@LizzieDeanMakes
@LizzieDeanMakes 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve never tried it but apparently sugar helps get more lather in soap recipes using lye - so it could work with the liquid soap you have made too - might be worth experimenting with a small amount of the slime and adding a tiny amount of sugar and trying it again with the loofah. Xx

@vivocanada

OMG, I've made slime. We'll see if I can actually use this stuff in my shower. MIght I make a suggestion? You need to be more specific with your video. You need to tell people why you are doing something and give specific directions. One thing I would emphasize because of the very viscous nature of the end product is that they need to have both a large storage container and a smaller dispensing container. BOTH of these MUST be squeezable so that you can get the very viscous product from the large storage container into the dispensing container relatively easily, and then dispense it relatively easily. If the containers are hard, your product will not come out easily.
@LizzieDeanMakes
@LizzieDeanMakes 4 жыл бұрын
Some interesting points there, thank you. In terms of viscosity you might want to add more water next time to get a better texture. Each bar soap is different so the quantity of water required can vary. If it is too liquid you can add salt little by little to thicken the soap, and if it is too thick you can dilute with water - although you may need to use a food processor or blender to combine the water in, and then wait for any lather to subside. Xx
