My grandpa and grandpa never bought a single bar of soap from a store. My grandpa made Lie soap. First, you need to leach lie from wood stove ash. The American ash tree makes the best ash for this purpose, which is why it's called the "Ash" tree. Any fat will work. My grandpa always saved, and used, opossum fat. He said opossum fat made the best soap. My grandma's laundry came-out snow while using home-mad lie soap. It had no odor (smell) at all. My grandfather use it to whip-up shaving cream in a cup. He also told me that groundhog hide made the longest lasting shoe strings. An important prepper item, that is seldom mentioned, is a couple of pairs of new shoes.

This side of prepping is absolutely essential and it's great that you're putting this material out with your large audience. Most people just imagine themselves in some disaster movie and don't think about day-to-day life going forward after "you win" and survive then whatever calamity passes. The old ways can never die.

My Spanish mother in law made new soap from used olive oil, wood ash and used leftover scraps of commercialy manufactured soap - she would melt it all down together, strain and filter it through course cloth and put it to set in stone trays - this could then be cut into bars or flaked to use for clothes washing - clothes came out super clean - someone commented wouldn't the lard/tallow be better used for food - but saved fat from cooking that no longer tastes good can be recycled like this and becomes refreshed in the process. Hope this helps someone.

In terms of SHTF, you have to consider that your scent may actually make it easier to notice your presence in an area and hunt you down. We are used to these scents now because of the market and bathing norms but the chemical smell of soap, especially store-bought stuff will be very noticeable when you're trying to be discrete. Neutral-smelling soap is best.

It is a good skill to know, but you are absolutely right about stocking up. Soap stores longer than the fat you make it out of, and said fat is likely to have many competing uses (food, cooking, fuel, lubrication, lighting...), so it makes sense to stock up on cheap soap now to save valuable fat later. It is ALWAYS best to know how to make something you need, for obvious reasons, but soap is going to be much more expensive (in terms of scarce inputs) later than now.

Plant 2 fruit trees of what is possible to grow in your region(apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, etc) and berry bushes(blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, gooseberry, etc). Plant herbs and green onions around your home or property border😊Raise your own 🐓 for eggs and meat & 🐑 You only need ¼ of an acre to sustain a family of 5. God Bless and Good luck🌹

According to Roman legend, soap was named after Mount Sapo, an ancient site of animal sacrifices. After an animal sacrifice, rain would wash animal fat and ash, that collected under the ceremonial altars, down to the banks of the Tiber River. Women washing clothes in the river noticed that if they washed their clothes in certain sudsy parts of the river after a heavy rainfall their clothes were much cleaner. Thus the emergence of the first soap - or at least the first use of soap as the legend goes.

To clean fat covered skin - rub ash from your campfire on the fat, and scrub in (if available) running water. It will naturally foam up and form soap. Be sure to thoroughly rinse off before the caustic effect takes place.

I make my own soap, sold a lot, but also wound up with a lot of not-so-pretty bars, and cut ends, etc. I have enough soap for a couple of years. Washing with soap and warm water is better than antibacterial. With soap, you actually wash the dirt off, where with antibacterial, it may or may not kill everything, and it is still on your skin, unless you wash it off, in which case you might as well just use soap. Over use of antibacterial gel is hard on skin and also kills the good bacteria, which lowers your immunity.

I have been making my own soap for about 15 years. The recipe amounts are very precise, as far as the total fats/oils and amount of lye and water in the lye solution. What the total fats/oils is composed of is very flexible. I have scaled a recipe to fill my molds which makes about 45 bars after cutting. Some things I have made were heavy on lard, some tallow, some rendered deer fat. All of my recipes include some amounts of coconut oil and olive oil. Saving and rendering the fat from the whitetail deer I process has been a game changer. Deer fat is fairly unpalatable for cooking means, but makes the standout best soap. I try to include at least 1lb of roughly 7.5lbs of fats/oils in my recipe.

That Oklahoma barge was nearly empty, and does raise some questions as far as their approach angle. as for Baltimore, the Physics and fluid dynamics are consistent with it being a terrible accident, as well as the time of day it happened, BUT I do not rule out foul play yet as there is still much more to this story consideirng a number of NAVY ships are stuck in the harbor until it is cleared. PLUS, the FSK bridge IS the only easy way tomove hazardous materials out of and into that area; and these are not allowed in the area tunnels.

You could learn the old fashioned way of making your own lye from wood ash and rain water if you really wanted to. I prefer to just stock up on lye crystals. I make soap which does go rancid after a few years depending on the oil/fat, but it is still ok to use though it doesn't smell great. Freezing home made soap will help it keep longer. Regarding soft skills, consider mini lessons on: washing dishes with almost no water, doing laundry with little water and no electricity, including soap and stain removal, types of cheap shades you can use to visually close off your house to the outside, how to keep marauders from stealing your crops, issues starting MAGS as once you approach a few people, even if they are not interested or think you are crazy, they now know you are ahead of the crowd in the regard of prepping and if an emergency arises, your house will be one of the first they look to for food, etc. there are many more soft skills that one needs to survive, along with the hard skills. And regarding people who have solar panels attached to their roofs and solar generators, issues with that is neighbors know you have possible power AND that solar generator might not survive an EMP. How does one prepare for that. Again, great video and it’s wonderful you are starting to look at soft skills. One last thing about soap making. as for the aluminum, lye just eats it up. and old camping trick is to mix the campfire ash with water to make a crude soap to clean your mess kits, but only if they are steel or titanium (or cast iron if you're going true pioneering and messed up your seasoning and need to start over) . Never with aluminum.

Have been making soaps, shampoos, laundry soap and lotions etc. for my whole family for 25 years. I was brought up that way. My Mom would even make her own lye. We used the fats from our own butchered animals . Now I use more conventional fats i.e.. coconut oil, olive oil, mango butter, shea and purchase my lye.

I highly recommend “Encyclopedia of country living” by Carla Emery. It is my go-to reference book for homesteading/farming/simple living. She has a breakdown on setting up a barrel and using hardwood ash to create and collect lye. I make soap from our pigs lard. Nothing goes to waste. Triple wet rendered lard, poured into glass mason jars will be shelf stable for at least a year. I’ve had it last 2 years then it starts to go off. When that happens, I will turn it into soap before it starts to smell. The soap can be grated and used for laundry too.

I've been making my own soap for about 20 years now, using saved fat drained from the meat I cook (another no-waste thing). My soap is a mix of pork and beef fat, filtered water (could be rain water) and lye. Never had a failed batch yet. I also grate my soap bars to make dish washing gel.

Soap is also useful for your clothes. Clean clothing will last longer and stay warmer, as well as being good from a hygiene perspective. Note that the "lye" you get from wood ash will be potassium carbonate, not the sodium hydroxide that you are buying from the store. It's a weaker base, and since it's attached to potassium rather than sodium you will get soft rather than hard soap.

You don't want to use scented soap! The Enemy can smell you for a long way. In Nam the enemy use to eat a fish sauce and you could smell them from a lone way. Charley never learned. We washed our cloth in paddy water. No Smoking -shaving-our bathing before we went out on patrol.THINK BEFORE YOU GOT OUT AROUND THE ENEMY HOW YOU SNELL! Gman
