Great video! I would only say please don't use as washing up liquid as it is toxic if consumed. 🙂

I also grind it coarsely and use is as a gentle scrubbing agent for cleaning the bathtub. I dried putting small chunks into my Yojung soj milk maker and got a nice cleaning cream out of it and stored it in the fridge.

Your very welcome. I'm amazed how nice the washing comes out. So fresh. I haven't tested it on oily clothes yet though.

You said you could boil it three times by adding more water. But should you add more water, or remove the old water first, then add the new water? You weren't clear on that.

I’ve missed this years conkers but I shall be out there promptly next season. I’ve got a few questions if you’d be so kind! Say you manage to collect a really good haul. You can’t keep them indefinitely in this state can you? So..what are my options for having a good supply of dish washing/ laundry liquid to last me a long time? Doe s the resulting soap liquid keep for a long time? Does it have to stay in the fridge. ANd the pulverised dried chestnuts...how long can I keep them? I’ve heard tales of good results but I’d like t gather sufficient for the year and keep it all safe to store...is that possible? Thanks for a lovely video, I’ve only just found your channel through searching for natural soap recipes! New subscriber.

Hi there. Lovely to meet you. Right. Once properly dehydrated if driedvstore then should be shelf stable for a good year. You can freeze or refrigerate excess. I'm considering adding citric acid as a ingredient to extend life. As a nut I think they should last well I'm going to try making some after a year. You can use this for hair. Body. Dishes and clothes.

Lynn CeeCee & Scarlet Peate: You can vacuum this very easily. It’ll cost you absolutely zero if you Happened to enjoy carbonated water or soda pop. Save your bottle and the cap. Washer bottle out with Luke warm water and a little dish detergent. Rinse and let air dry. If it were for food purposes, I’d tell you to put a spoonful of bleach in the rinse water. But I think we can skip that here. Cut up and dry your conkers; put the pieces or powder into the pop bottle. Consider throwing in a moisture absorber like the ones you get in a medicine bottle or a Shoebox. Tap the product down in the bottom so that it is densely packed.Leave enough space in the bottle so that you can squeeze the air out. Squeeze the bottle to expel most of the residual air volume in the top of the jar, and then put on the cover. When you release the bottle, there should be a little dent in the side at the very least, to indicate that you’ve created vacuum in the bottle. Congratulations vacuum sealed and dry product at no charge to yourself, and it should certainly be preserved to last until the next conkers season. :)

Scarlet Peate self-sufficiency: Hi, Scarlet! Thanks much for your video! So it’s been a couple years since you made this video.… Have you continued to make your own soap from conquers, and if so, what has been the longterm result? Reason that I’m asking, it’s not only the times, but also because st least one KZfaqr gave this a shot, and found that she ended up with laundry that after six months, that her clothes wasn’t really clean. So i’d like to troubleshoot it if I can, As it seems to be a really good-base product to begin with; and heaven knows that the price is certainly right. My thoughts are along the lines of a couple of ideas: many years ago, my family actually had a consult with a manufacturer of laundry detergent. We had noticed that in certain places, detergent that work well in one place did not work well in another period and we also noticed a variation in the effectiveness of the detergent for time of year. She had some really useful insights: • The pH of the water counts. Detergents are designed to work within a specific pH. Outside of that, not so much. This was really useful, as it put us in a position to use simple pH testing strips to help determine the best detergent to use for the water in our area, and if it seemed like the detergent wasn’t really doing his job anymore, he gave us a very clear path to retest and reevaluate. •. Detergents can be a bit like shampoo and conditioner in a way. That is to say, summer formulated to work well with others. When you mix a match, that can work against a person. Because there can be ingredients in one product that can undermine the effectiveness of an ingredient in the other. Now, that information was particularly useful for shampoo and conditioner, because the same manufacturer that makes the shampoo usually makes it conditioner to go with it, and with a wide range of properties within their range of products. But it’s not quite so simple for laundry detergent. This also suggests a clear path to figure out. But if you take a little time, to sit down and examine formulations with a consideration for all the ingredients in each. That’s assuming that a person uses fabric softener. • she probably said lots of other things, but I don’t remember a lot of those. Right now, it seems to me that it’s possible if there’s a residual product from the plant itself left behind, that can build up overtime. But it will take a little more feedback from more people before I get the idea about that. Everybody seems to feel that it leaves a nice smell, and everybody seems to agree that it actually removes dirt and stains. But the ones that report for the laundry is not clean for six months, are the ones that lead me to think that perhaps the residue is the issue. This also suggests an easy fix, depending on what is in the actual residue. Given the times that we’re in, and the fact that I’m on a local committee to help our poorest people to have the supplies that they need in life, going forward, this is one of many avenues that are well worth chasing down. I sincerely hope that you’ll get back to me and let me know what your findings are. If there turns out to be a big disparity in experience that people have been using this natural form of soap, I may ask about the area in which a person lives, so I can compare the local water, And I may ask some questions about how the person is using the product. I would be willing to set up a dedicated email address for that so that anybody who chose to help me out with this little bit of research would not have any personally identifying information posted online. Full disclosure: I’m not being paid for this, and will be sharing the results freely with anybody who asks afterwards. While I do have a KZfaq channel, I don’t actually post any videos myself. I no interest in doing that, and would only do it if it became necessary to get certain kinds of information together that’s not otherwise readily available online. Basically, my intention is to figure out the ends and outs before recommend it to people, because if turns out to be a really good thing, then I’ll recommend it to everyone in our group, but if it turns out to ruin clothes, it just wouldn’t be responsible of me too share it with people who would likely not be in a position to replace clothes that are ruined. My intention is to use this myself, as I don’t believe in recommending practises that I would not personally undertake. It’ll be another month or so before the chestnuts are ripe enough to use locally, so this is a good time to do the gathering of information. How would you advise me, please?

@@scarletpeate : So sorry to hear that you’re going through this. I hope you’ve got something that does a great job of getting rid of the migraine quickly for you. It used to be my job to do the neuro- rehabilitation in a specialty clinic; pretty much all the patients who sought treatment there suffered from debilitating migraine, so that was one of the first issues that we normally helped address, since it affected every other parameter of their lives, and affected how well they were able to participate in other forms of rehabilitation. About migraine, You may already know about these things, but just in case, I hope you don’t mind if I offer up a couple of ideas in the interest of making your life easier: not everybody knows that the first stage of a migraine is actually not painful. And because there’s such a big gap between the first symptoms and the onset of the headache, they don’t often even realize that they’re having one at that point. The first signs can be as many as even 24 hours or more before the actual headache hits. This phase is called the prodrome, and the three most common ways that I’ve heard people express the experience is that s/he woke up in the morning with a sense of impending doom that was pervasive and which s/he could not seem to shake; s/he woke up in the morning totally depressed with no discernable reason; and lastly: at any time of the day, s/he suddenly started having to pee a lot, without having had much or even anything at all to drink. The urine colour may be off in a very specific way. It would seem like s/he’d only just come back from taking a whiz, and no time later s/he’d have to go take another one, and another…. There’s a progression of things that happens between waking up in the morning and possibly already having the symptoms, to the onset of the actual headache, assuming that’s the expression your migraines take (because a lot of them for some people or body migraines or silent migraines). The last one in the progression is often the one where the five senses are affected; when these happen, you can regard that as a last warning to take your meds or remedies before the pain hits, in the hopes of a aborting the migraine completely or at the very least mitigating the symptoms in terms of intensity, duration, and severity. And if you can do that in time, it’s possible to not only abort the migraine before the headache phase can form, but also not have to deal with the days’ worth of postdromal “hangover“. You’re probably familiar with at least some of the five-senses involvement. The visual disturbances are the ones that seem to make the strongest impressions on people, and they can range from strange light patterns in the vision, to extremely enhanced vision with higher resolution and colours, temporary loss of useable vision or vision at all. That’s usually in the last 20 minutes or less before the headache hits. Before that, scents can become magnified. Food smells can become so strong that they can be nauseating. Walking past somebody who has outworked his/her deodorant can be almost traumatizing. Around the same time as the olfaction symptoms happen, sound likewise becomes amplified. And it’s not just your imagination. You can hear conversations being held on the other side of the house, insects walking across the floor… You’ll never do a better job of tuning an instrument then you will at this moment, because your hearing is so nuanced. Some people feel that “pins And needles” sensation. When the smells and sounds become really amplified, sometimes it’ll actually turn your stomach. That’s when nausea and intestinal upset can occur. In terms of usefulness, my thinking is that if you know that these things could happen and you’re watching for it, and can recognize it for what it is; that puts you in a position to take your treatment that you’ve worked out with your MD/ND/pharmacist, while it’s possible to abort the migraine before it forms. The other thing, and you may already know this as well, is that there are 13 identified triggers of migraine, and many of them are addressed in the migraine protocol that a person usually gets at the hospital, assuming a non-opioid approach: Usually the hospital replenishes treats a migraineur/-euse with fluids and electrolytes, adding Benedryl (aka diphenhydramine, in case you don’t live in an area where that’s a common brand name for a specific histamine H-1 antagonist), and Gravol/Dramamine (dimenhydrinate) to the IV infusion. Which suggest preventative measures, too. This ran a bit long, but these are things that I wish somebody had told me early on; a whole lot of years of misery could have been a lot more functional. Feel better soon.❤️

Hello there at last I'm feeling better and found your comment again so I cam answer you.. I've been considering your points.. Firstly I use various things to wash with.. I make soap ... so I also use grated soap and other items added to create a washing powder .. its great I love using these horse chestnuts to wash with They leave the washing clean and fresh... i will add vinegar to dirty loads iwill use high temperature too and I use the sun's action to bleach and refresh the clothes.. I do not have tons of whites to wash as my water on the farm is contaminated with iron bacteria so my water sysins the whites... I find using sunshine vinegar and temperatures dependant on what I need from my wash.. I still highly recommend these nuts to wash with .. I hope that helps .. thankyou for your patience . X

@@scarletpeate : i’m glad you’re past that migraine. Those things are vicious. Thank you so much for getting back to me, Scarlet. Your help is invaluable. Especially now, since the chestnuts just ripened a month early and have started to fall from the trees. It seems that everything here did ripen that a month early. But it means that the month that I would have spent figuring things out, to be ready to start testing, is not there. I also make my own soap, (My absolute favourite every day soap is the Zenda’s soap that I found online long ago) but I may have to modify the formula if I’m going to use any of it in this application, because of the fact that I superfat it and add oat flour to it, for dry skin. I don’t want to defeat the saponification properties of the chestnut powder/flakes By putting together two products that are pretty much gonna cost one do you wanna do the work of the other. Lol. I’d appreciate it if you would give me an idea as to the type of soap formulation that you find to be most practical with this. I’ve probably already missed you for the day, so I may try a load with sunlight hand soap, as it’s been around for a dogs’ age and is pretty much ubiquitous. If it works, that will make the idea easy to pass along. This is very encouraging indeed, because it also tells me that it may be possible to use the chestnut flakes to cut detergent. That might do a good job of reducing the expense greatly. It may be a good idea to involve a couple more committee members on this, so that I’ve got a few people working on a along side of me, applying your ideas, to see if we can get the formulation correct while the chestnuts are fresh and available for people to collect. So the formula that you use generally speaking, is maybe 50-50 soap greetings and Chestnut Bits? I found some chestnuts ripened two nights ago, so I took the first few that night and cut them into little bitty bits, I put them in the dehydration unit. They were done yesterday, so I’m hoping (optimistically) today to put on my first load of laundry. :D
