A DIY Milwaukee packout video is much needed in today's day and age. $300+ dollars for plastic boxes... unbelievable.

Great video and project. I made this a few months back. I modified to fit in a milk crate to store in my work van. I plan on making a few more sets. These are great for organizing and separating all the different parts I use from job to job. I like that one tray can fit my 1/2" parts, another tray can fit my 3/4" parts etc. I am constantly trying to find better ways to organize my van and shop for optimal storage. Thanks John.

As I've said over and over, I'm not responsible for what anyone else will do, or teaching them how to use the equipment - these videos are not about that. I'm not going to alter the way I do something to make it look "safer" (or, what most guys who don't know the difference think is safer). Everything I've done in this video is well within most experienced woodworkers comfort zone - I rip 3" wide strips without a push stick, always have, always will.

The best place to find free wood is to ask the site supervisor of a residential construction site if you can go in and "clean it up" for him. If you target rich people houses you will find a bounty of lumber and plywood cutoffs during the framing stage. Cutoffs are great for small projects like this. Go back during the finishing stage for nice pieces of hardwood which is usually found in the form of trim, casing, baseboard, stair components and fancy wall panel. Just cut off the shaped parts.

If you bring coffee or beer to a friendly construction site supervisor he may even let you take full leftovers which are worth hundreds of dollars. Target custom home builders for the highest quality materials. You can also find lots of other stuff in the disposal bin for small projects and hobby work like PVC pipe, sheet metal, nails and screws, wire, shingles, hay bales, glass, stone, tile and insulation. I've found it all in dumpster bins before they get hauled away to landfill.

Very nice. And similar ones can be used for lots of applications - sewing/knitting; herbs; seeds; toys; and many others. It's a matter of using various sizes and assemblies as needed. Thanks for sharing.

Add some latches to the sides to fasten each tray together and you can carry all the trays with the top most handle.

If you were to add some eye bolt and hook fasteners to each of the boxes you could attach the boxes together and carry them all at once when stacked. Really cool project.

Good idea! One thing to remember is that these get really heavy when they are filled, so you may not want to carry more than one at a time.

Commercial wood shops are another great source of free wood. Again it's usually in the form of cutoffs but you are only limited by your imagination. High end places will stack the best cutoffs on a pallet and sell it when full to local woodworkers for a nominal amount. I found a shop on craigslist selling their premium cutoffs in pallet bundles for $40. Small price to pay for what turned out to be about $400 worth of quality hardwood and even some exotics.

If you're willing to do some really hard work you can also get wood from local arborists if you're willing to pick it up and saw/mill it yourself. Talk to them first so they don't cut it into firewood. This can be back breaking work and you may not have an Alaskan mill on hand or a truck to transport it. Also, the homeowner may be in a rush which might not give you enough time and you'll have a big mess to clean up after or the arborist will hear it from the homeowner and never call you again.

John, Excellent tutorial! Will be putting a few of these together this weekend. Please use a push stick next time - I cringed with every pass through the table saw - only takes one time (or ten, depending on how many missing fingers). Anyhoo, thanks for the great project!
@JohnHeisz
@JohnHeisz 9 жыл бұрын
Houston Firefox I've been using a table saw for 36 years, 36 of those before your warning. I still have all of my fingers and don't plan on losing any, so I use a push stick where it is appropriate. There are instances where it's more dangerous (due to increased chance of kickback) to use a push stick. That's something that many people that don't have as much experience simply don't know.
@houstonfirefox
@houstonfirefox 9 жыл бұрын
John Heisz Good point John. Of the times I've had a serious kickback, several of them were when using a push stick (wouldn't it be ironic for the emergency services to find me impaled with a safety device? ;). Here's to another 36 years of your videos - really enjoy the projects!
@Przykominku

That is a good point. But there's only one thing you could consider doing. Due to YT you might have followers with much less experience than yours. Maybe a word of warning on the safety might do? ANd it IS a great video. Thank you.

true... i think it's safer to control the pieces by hand through the cut in most cases instead of trying to aim it through a cut with some wobbly sticks... just as long as you pay attention to what you are doing.. I didn't a couple of weeks ago and my right hand ended up in a shaper... one amputated finger and three more useless... time to start training my left hand

Newbie question: I noticed that to make the handle hole, he used his table saw and went through the wood to get to it. My question is, does this have any advantage over using a hand jigsaw without cutting the side of the handle?
@MrLikeke
@MrLikeke 8 жыл бұрын
+MaghoxFr I think you mean bandsaw. The only advantage is not having to pick up another tool. But having done it as he had, there is the need to secure that cut whether by adhesive or fastener. BTW: I didn't intend to give you a thumbs down, I fumbled clicking on the wrong icon.

While I appreciate John's videos, a better design for this project would feature the handle of the bottom box being used to carry the whole stack. However, I do realize that is not his intent here because he doesn't want to lug the whole kit for every job. However the boxes can be carried separately but that feature could be used when convenient. As far as I know, the Dutch are masters of creativity in such practical applications. I have several trays made years ago.

Hi John i'm one of you fans, following all your vids, thanks for taking you time, and sharing your workshop and work with us ! Correct me if im wrong, but is it not the borblem with a kickback, that the movement of the wood, causes your hand to follow the wood in a dirrection you maybe did not entend to go, possible causing bamage to you fingers ?
