Learn how to make #stroopwafels, delicious #Dutch cookies filled with a delectable syrup. This stroopwafel recipe is one of my most requested recipes, and I have made a easy version. Enjoy a warm stroopwaffle with a hot cup of coffee or tea, or just by itself. The syrup with just a hint of cinnamon is perfectly kept between two deliciously thin waffles! They can be found anywhere, but none are better than fresh homemade stroopwafels.
As a kid, I loved going to "de markt" (think of it as a traveling farmer's market), because I'd get the chance to eat a fresh stroopwafel from one of the local vendors. These stroopwaffles were twice as large as the storebought ones, warm, and with ooey-gooey syrup! It was a bit messy to eat, but I absolutely loved it. To this day, stroopwafels from "de markt" are the gold standard when it comes to these syrup waffles. So when I started developing this recipe, I wanted them to taste just like I remember those fresh ones, and I think I have come very close.
Because you do need a somewhat specialty waffle iron, I have found a less expensive option that works pretty darn well!

I live in Sweden and work with 2 dutch guys, the first time they brought stroopwafels to work and introduced me to them, I put one on top of my mug as soon as they had poured up my coffee, and they said "oh, so you've had these before?" because they said that that's what dutch people usually do. one of them are from the north part and the other the south part. so probably not a local thing.

We never heated them up on top of our tea cup, we ate it while drinking the tea. And you are right, in the last 10 years they have become popular (and expensive) in the U.S. Thank you so much for sharing your videos, I am a very visual learner, so these help me so much and bring back so many memories.

I made them and they taste so good! Stroopwafels are awesome. Ever since we had hot stroopwafels in Amsterdam I've been trying out different recipes. This is a keeper! I also find when slicing them I wait till they cool down a bit and then they don't fall apart on me lol! That's probably the hardest part in making them 😊 Thanks so much for sharing this!

Though I sometimes wish we didn't move back to the states, making and enjoying some of my favorite Dutch treats every fall and winter since returning has helped the Netherlands feel a little closer. I hope to be back someday, but for now we will rely on oliebollen, krentenbollen, and now stroopwafels using your recipe. Fantastically thorough and concise tutorial. Heel erg bedankt!

Thank you for the recipe, i love these. Living in sweden i'm lucky there are shops that sell them in 10 packs (i have to stop myself buying them as much as i'd like to). Looking forward to trying to make my own though. Funny about the warming up, i never knew that that was a thing at all, until i flew with KLM in october (they fly from my home town) and decided to buy some with my coffee on the flight and then reading the package of the waffles, it said to put them on top of your warm drink to warm them up. so i tried, was okay, didn't make much difference. i suppose a tiny little cup of airline coffee wasn't warm enough :P but it's funny to hear this wasn't a thing in the netherlands in the past, and now it's printed instructions on the stroopwafel package (in dutch and english).

Good day to you! Being an American and not well traveled, I'd never heard of these before today. A generous neighbor gave us many oranges from their orchard. I want to do something to show appreciation for her generosity and her husband said she loves Dutch food, as she's Dutch & Stroopwafels were here favorite. I would love to be able to make this for her as a thank you so I searched online for recipes. Your video was so informative and easy - hee he - to follow. I appreciate how you show us the actual mixing process. I hope I can succeed at making them for her. My town was founded by Dutch folks, hence, I have many Dutch neighbors and our community is very generous. I'm going to reach out to the town to see if anyone has a Palmer waffle maker they wouldn't mind loaning me. I really hope to do these right. Thank you again for sharing and I will let you know how they come out. :)

Nice recipe. Thanks . I found the KZfaq video on My Dutch Heritage Facebook page. I like alot of cinnamon so I added a bit more. Found out that I was a bit short on golden syrup so it go a bit more treacle. Next time will have the right amount of ingredients required. I used a cheap waffle iron that I got off ebay in Australia. About 1 minute was the cook time . Great fun to make . Ps. Tried to post this comment on the website but it kept failing. I think that putting the stroopwafel on top of a tea or coffee mug is new. I asked my almos 90 year old mom and she never saw this in NL before. I suspect that the 2 large Dutch industrial manufacturers have used this idea to open into new markets. Here in Spain they are called “tapatés” which translates into tea covers. They have become incredibly popular now everywhere and I think it’s just a great marketing job by distinguishing this cookie from all the others.

Few questions: - Make sure they are completely cooled off before storing them in an airtight container. - Store them in a cool, dry place. - Make sure the syrup isn't too thin when putting it on the waffle. - Make sure you add enough syrup when putting it on the waffle.

The heating over a cup of coffee is probably geographical feature. My friend who spent quite some time in Groningen told me already 20 years ago that this is the right way to do it. When I was in Nijmegen, can't say quite the same area, this was also seen as traditional. So, I don't know. :) As to the iron, every time I was in the Netherlands I just could not find a normal, gas-heated double-sided waffle maker, with which you don't even have to cut - just snap it open really quickly and the waffle splits from the steam inside - just seal them with the syrup, as the legend has it the original scenario was, and then scrape off when they cooled down a bit.. Saw these used once in a Christmas Market in Prague, prepared by the Dutch guy from Driebergen (?), smiled and joked all the way through but refused to sell one at the end, and he had like five :))

@@ToinesKitchen it could be that the Dutch almond extract has a bitter almond in the batch. Something that is supposed to be mandatory in making almondspijs and I just do not like it.

If your making them at scale - do you have to spread the syrup immediately individually after cutting them in half or can you do it all at once when they’re all cut open and spread syrup for the whole yield.

Yes, but you probably should not close it all the way, because it would be too thin

Hi Toine, I'm from Denmark and I have some problems finding the brown sugar. I have tried to use Danish brown farin sugar but it wasn't good. Do you know if the light brown muscovado sugar can be used instead of brown sugar?

Goedendag.

It helps to split them. Some people make them without yeast, and then just stack two waffles on top of each other with syrup in between.

My mother is Dutch and never lived in the US but she would always warm up her Stroopwafels over her tea, i thought it was a Dutch common thing to do 😂

In the US we differentiate between syrup and caramel. Syrup is always liquid enough to be poured.

I personally would not use treacle as it has a strong sulfurous nature which I do not associate with waffelstroop. Groetjes van California. Ist gen American-Dutch.
