How To Make Suspended Garage Storage Shelves for Under $200 || DIY Storage Project

Garage storage shelves are a great addition to any garage allowing you to organize your things in bins. I this video i go step by step and show you guys how i made suspended garage shelves out of 2x4 to store up to 18 storage bins for under $200. I also have a full cost breakdown and links to the materials to help you build storage shelves just like i did.

Your idea to use the angle brackets and the slotted flat bars is by far the best and the easiest method I've seen.

This is very well done. Same angle iron and bars that I use to hang HVAC equipment. The size of the cuts really minimizes wood waste. Super thoughtful build, with excellent points made throughout ("this is essentially a wall being built horizontally, with 16" on-center framing"). If I didn't already buy safe racks, I'd totally do this.

Under £200 is amazing for me as a single mum, but I think I may be able to get it under £100 (challenge accepted 😉😂 - things are more cheaper here in the UK). If i am successful, this will have saved me over £1,000 from a loft conversion!!! 😁 wish me luck 🤞🏾

Really good video as always Bart. Great look and thrifty too. I used the old boring Rubbermaid bins on mine because a painters pole fits snug enough in the handle i don’t have to use a ladder to shuffle them or get them down. The bins you have are bigger....and less expensive. Such good content , keep it up !

I used chains to lag hooks in rafters for support to the ceiling. Much easier. Still holding things up 25years later. Great video.

I use fleximounts less than 200 (always on sale)for a 4x8 they have three mounts per unit. That holds 600 lbs. 5 years later still solid

I built the same type of storage shelf at my last place..and like yours, most of the weight is held up by the ceiling brace 2x4. The problem is, depending on how much weight you add to it, it will start to stress that wall a LOT!! Come winter, I started hearing pops, and creaks, etc..it drove me crazy..that house never made those sounds before. As this was ALL I added to the place that summer..I put a basement jack stand under it about half way across..screwed it up until it was level once again..never heard another squeak or pop for the next 20 years!! Still hanging there as far as I know. Just in the lumber alone there is more weight there than one thinks. Just a suggestion, but I would put a brace jack under it bro. Great job!! Good luck!! 😁👌👍✌

Nice job. I'd caution your viewers that the integrity of this assembly rests on the shear strength of those hex bolts and lag screws, so substituting anything less is a really bad idea. As for 10 bucks a sheet for 1/2" strand board (osb), that is over. Depending on where you live you might expect to pay twice that today. The way you put the deck together is great, so 3/8 ply would do fine. 3/8 ply is a little cheaper (where I live) and weighs 18 lbs less per sheet than 1/2" osb. Cheers.

Nice I have a Modified I-Beam system(that holds the top of the container when slid in) above my garage door using those same bins. It's out of sight when not used I love it. wish i had the height to double stack like you did and i like that bike rack that is the biggest issue I have now.

Komar Project sweet fyi this is where I got my idea from years ago. Except I used 2x3’s and 1x4’s to make the bottom “I beam” then used 2 8foot 1x4’s to tie them all together and bolt it to the ceiling. www.familyhandyman.com/garage/storage/create-a-sliding-storage-system-on-the-garage-ceiling/

Vardashde he has to get allergy shots every month. He is allergic to so many things and we can’t figure out what. So he get a shot each month to keep it under control

@@KomarProject Oh..If you ever try to prepare the food for your dog, I do that with our dog because she also reacted to something allergic, now she gets boiled vegetables with potatoes and fresh ground beef, the meat in proportion to potatoes and vegetables should be 70%.

You could have actually attached the angle iron to the rafter trusses instead of 2x4”s. Would have made a cleaner look. Still like the idea and plan to use it in our garage.

Mike Hoffman my joists we’re going the other way. I though about it but the angle iron would run the wrong way for what I was trying to do. But if you have rafters that’s go the opposite way it would work perfect

Dang I wish the prices were like this nowadays haha. It's about $3-$4 per 2x4x8 around here in midwest US. 1/2 OSB is about $12 each. So the price is a bit more than this, probably over $200 or so. But either way, still cheaper than buying something like this from Amazon or something. I'll add this to my playlist haha.
