Love that you got an older and younger generation to try your dishes. You didn’t just use your children and husband. Granted, your Aunts and Mom might not always be available to participate. The energy between you and your brother was great. I’m estranged from my family and I miss when we use to do things like this together when I was growing up. You tell family stories and I am riveted by your recipes. You all are amazing and I am glad I found you. Today, from this video, I believe I can make a true gumbo. Will be excited to try my hand at it. Thank you for doing your videos and being yourself.

I am born, raised and live in Louisiana. When I first saw "perfect gumbo", I laughed thinking okay....... they are not in Louisiana so this is going to be hysterical. As soon as you informed me of your Louisiana roots, I knew it would be good!

You're so lucky to have a good relationship with your brother. I recently lost my brother and we didn't always have a good relationship, but watching you two really brings up a lot of emotions. My brother and I were probably on the best terms before he died. And I'm forever grateful for that.

I'm in Mississippi, so Steven's variation is probably what would be more preferred here. I'm allergic to anything aquatic, and normally I prefer the less than traditional things people like here... And I was born and raised here 😂

I don't have a single Cajun root in my tree but I love some gumbo! I had made some tonight for dinner before I saw this video. I'm glad I didn't see it first, though because you have me wanting to add some crabmeat to it. Hilarious that your mom and one aunt said yours wasn't even gumbo. What a great and fun family you have! My brother is finally moving back to the east coast next summer and I cannot wait to have these kinds of fun times again!

I'm from Houston but my husband is from Lafayette. If he was watching this he would say "first ya make a roux....". He uses oil and flour to make a roux for gumbo. I use oil and flour to make cream gravy for chicken fried steak.

I'm born and raised in South Louisiana and gumbo is a staple here. Not saying yours is wrong but we've never combined seafood with chicken and sausage in our gumbo. It's one or the other, the taste of each should remain separate 😀. But will say they both looked delish.

Okay for the prize, here's what we used to do for a card game at family Reunion. We would take a giant rawhide dog bone and each year write the winner's names on the bone for the card tournament. You could do something like that each time you cook have an ability to write the winner and the date on your prize and then just use the same prize every year!

First let me say that making gumbo for people that have been making it for years AND then have them critic it is pretty brave. Second, your brother is adorable and I will be checking out his channel. My Grandmaw is Cajun, grew up in Crowley LA, and we don't use celery in most things. We use onions and green bell pepera still in gumbo. She also uses garlic and parsley in a lot of her recipes.

I always love your spunky attitude but I do love the sibling videos. I'm a tad louisiana outlaw with our gumbo we do smoked sausage and we love file in ours. And 100 percent agree always taste test! And yes uncle toneys is a staple in our home as well!!

You have to sear the sausage too! And filè is a must! And this might not be traditional but I add spam to it. It gives it that perfect salty bite to the gumbo.

Loved this video. I’m from outside of New Orleans and both versions were authentic. My husband grills his smoked sausage before adding it to the gumbo…… same idea as your brother browning the chicken thighs. I liked your idea of pureeing the oysters. If left whole they are very temperamental, easy to make them too squishy or too chewy. BTW, I knew you had a South Louisiana connection when I saw some Richard’s sausage on your counter in one episode.

My mothers side of the family is from New Orleans and her mothers side is Cajun. I grew up with Gumbo, Red Beans and Rice and BBQ Shrimp. My family always did a seafood gumbo with okra!
