Here you go •6 cups (1500ml) icing sugar •3/4 cups (190ml) butter •3/4 cups (190ml) milk •1 tsp vanilla extract Sorry we didn't include it in the video. It's something that we're making sure doesn't happen again! Hope your icing goes well!

It is quite a sweet icing. If you prefer your icing less sugary add a bit less icing sugar. If you gradually add the butter and sugar you can build up the thickness and taste of the icing until you get your preferred way. Hope this helps.

I make my butter cream icing like this all the time. to me a thick creamy consistency makes wonderful flowers and makes icing your cake or cupcakes much easier.

Hi. You can lessen the sweetness by starting with a bit less butter and icing sugar and then adding a bit of both to build up the frosting until it's the right level of sweetness. Or try adding some vanilla extract to add an extra level of flavour to it. Hope this helps!

It should be fine in room temperature for an hour or two. It might start melting if it's very hot though. To prevent it from melting add quite a bit of sugar to a crust develops on the icing. Hope this helps

You can indeed. Just add a few drops to start with and then build on the colour until it's the shade you want. Wait until the ingredients are all blended together and then add the food colouring right at the end.

It is indeed sweet. Just how we like our buttercream. If you don't want it quite as sweet just add less icing sugar. Add it in gradually to the butter until you reach your ideal sweetness.

Put the icing sugar, butter and milk in the bowl of an electric mixer. The butter should be slightly softened. Stir the mixture together gently with the paddle before turning the mixer on. Cream the mixture on a medium-high speed for a few minutes. Add more icing sugar to thicken the mixture, using a half cup at a time, mixing by hand. Mix for a final minute on a medium-high speed, until the colour begins to lighten. Finally, add a teaspoon of flavouring, such as vanilla.

Using butter thats soft will just make it easy to mix with the icing sugar. If it's a hard block it's going to take longer and more effort to get all the ingredients combined. If your icing looked more like butter then it sounds like you need to add more icing sugar. Keep checking the butter cream and adding more icing sugar until you get the right taste for you. Mixing it for a while will also make the icing more paler.

You need to use powdered sugar as granulated sugar will make your icing really gritty. It will also not combine as well with the butter. You should be able to pick up powdered sugar in most large supermarkets.

Go for it dominka. If it's a bit liquidy you can always add a sprinkle more of icing sugar.

This is best to make with icing sugar but if you don't have any you can indeed make up the icing with granulated sugar. Check out our video "How to make buttercream with granulated sugar" to find out how!

One tip we've found is that you can try slapping the icing on the side of the bowl which will help get rid of some of the bubbles. So as you stir flick it onto the side of the bowl. Let us know if it works.

You could use almond milk or soya milk if you're can't have dairy. Or you might be able to leave this bit out if you don't mind your icing being a little bit thick.

Hi. Yes to make cherry butter cream icing just make up the recipe in the video and then add 3-4 tbsp of maraschino cherry juice and a few drops of red food colouring. Hope this helps. Let us know how the cake turns out.

Hi Kerri, I think this is just one of those things that happens with all mixers. The best way seems to be just to stop the mixer and give it a scrap when needed. If we find out any different we'll let you know!

This looks great but I need to confirm something. The video says 3/4 lb of softened butter. In the comments below you provide the recipe written out as 3/4 cup of butter (or 190g). 190g is less than .5 lbs. Other research I've done shows that 1 cup of butter is 8oz which makes 2 cups = 16oz = 1lb. This would make 3/4 lb of butter = 1.5 cups. Considering the pile of butter on your parchment paper, this seems more likely than the 3/4 cup (190g) being posted. Can you please confirm?

Royal icing sets solid and has a shiny gloss where as this is a soft buttery icing. Give it a go and let us know how you get on!

If you could taste more butter than icing than just keep adding more icing sugar. Keep tasting as you're making it so you get the right level of butter and icing. Hope it goes better next time!

Thank you for sharing your lessons with us. What is the secret to the frosting so that when I try to make a rose on the nail, it doesn't fall or melt. That's what I'm having a problem with as a biginner .

You can indeed half the recipe to make smaller amounts. The higher the fat content of the milk you use the creamier it will taste but it will still be totally good to eat and enjoy whether you use full fat or skimmed.

You can indeed use margarine although butter will of course give the icing a more buttery, rich flavour. Let us know how you get on!

Hi. Unsalted butter is best for this recipe. Take it out of the fridge a while before you want to make the icing so it's not too solid. Let us know how you get on!

Hi Renato. To make up some delicious butter cream you will need 140g/5oz butter, softened 280g/10oz icing sugar 1-2 tbsp milk Let us know how your icing comes out. Hope you enjoy!

it will work better with icing sugar as normal caster sugar will be very grainy and a bit bitty.

The milk just helps to control the texture. If you want a stiffer frosting you don't need to add any, where as if you want it more smooth than add a little bit of milk. Good luck with the icing. Let us know how you get on!

Yes, I was waiting to hear that from someone but I guess when these mixers first came out I was so stuck on having the "super" mixer that I had imagined it did things outside of "reality" such as scraping the bowl, although the new one comes with a "bowl scraper" on the side, I guess it might make it difficult if they invented a mixer to do that on the bottom. Laziness, maybe lol...but more like expectation. Thanks!

Best recipe I've seen yet. others suggest vanilla extract and/.or almond extract to be added to this. Does it work with this recipe as well?

But they are using about 3 sticks of butter. Normally buttercream, in smaller batches, use 1 stick of butter for 2 cups of powder sugar. The amount of powdered sugar you add is to your preference of sweetness.

You can use any kind of cow's milk for this icing. Full fat will give it a creamier taste but you can use fat free if you're trying to be a bit healthier.

thrice? you have to put the granulated sugar in the blender but since you need 6 cups you might have to use 10-12 cups of granulated sugar and blend it for a while.

if unsalted butter is unavailable then it give the same texture with salted butter.nd can v use normal sugar powder or is it different.nd one thing more can v add colour in it after beating or need to put in while beating.plz must reply...

Hi there, great clear video, I hope you can help me as I'm a bit confused ! My son has recently been watching Amazing Wedding Cakes on TV, and I was interested to see that they use buttercream to cover their sponge cakes before covering with sugar paste/fondant. I have to make an Art Deco cake for a friend and as I'm not very experienced I wondered if your recipe would be suitable to use for this method, as it seems to provide a smooth surface, also, how long would the buttercream last? Thanks
