This is an amazing vegan hot dog recipe that I lightly adapted from a 2018 edition of VegNews. I've made 'em countless times, and they always turn out great! RECIPE BELOW or more info here: thatvegannephew.com/vegan-cor...
1 (14-ounce) package extra-firm tofu, pressed for 30 minutes and crumbled
¼ heaping cup masa harina or finely ground yellow cornmeal
½ heaping cup vital wheat gluten flour
1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
2 tablespoons olive oil or safflower oil
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1 ½ tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ tablespoons sugar
1 ½ teaspoons salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
1½ teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon ground mace or nutmeg
½ teaspoon mustard powder
1. After pressing the tofu for 30 minutes, crumble it up into a food processor (with a dough blade attachment if you have one), add everything else to it, and process until it forms a sturdy dough.
2. Form the dough into an oval and portion it into 8 equal pieces. Roll the pieces into 4-inch hot dogs.
3. Cut eight 6×8-inch strips (or strips big enough to fit the dogs) of both parchment paper and aluminum foil. Next, wrap the hot dogs first in parchment paper strip, then in foil strip, twisting the ends in the same direction you rolled the hot dog to create a tight seal.
Tip: You can cut off a bit of the excess twisted end with scissors, to help fit in the steamer.
4. Add some water to a steamer, and then get it boiling. Once boiling, add the wrapped tofu dogs to the steam basket, cover with a lid, and steam for 45 minutes, until firm to the touch.
Remove the tofu dogs from the steamer, and let them cool for 10 minutes before unwrapping.
Eat right away, or save for later to grill.

Is the wheat gluten part absolutely necessary for it to turn out right? Is there a gluten free replacement that could be used?

The vital wheat gluten is very sticky, and so it holds everything together. I have been experimenting with trying to make meat substitutes without it, but I haven't yet found a good replacement. When I do, I'll let you and all the gluten-free people know!

I avoid cooking with aluminum foil, so what would happen if I skipped wrapping in aluminum foil and instead tied up the parchment ends with twine?

That very well might work. I'd also use a bit more parchment than is shown here, just so you ensure it holds up during the steaming process. Let me know how it goes if you decide to try it !

The Parchment keeps your food from contact with he actual Aluminum foil..

You can try wrapping it in banana leaf. There's traditional Vietnamese and thai sausage made wrapped in banana leaf

Hi, great vid on vegan hotdogs... Is there anyway possible you could write the ingredients in the comment section or you community tab... Some of the ingredients I couldn't make out because of the white letters... Sorry my eyes act funny looking at words online... 😊

Not sure exactly. Might be more costly making it for the first time because you gotta buy some unusual ingredients most people don't have in their pantries (like the vital wheat gluten, masa harina, and perhaps some spices). But times after that, you could probably make them 3 - 4 more times without having to buy much more than the tofu. :)

Hilarious how much time went into breaking up the tofu before putting in the food processor. Good result but lot of wasted foil.

Well, it is kind of important to make sure to crumble the tofu into the processor before adding the spices, so you don't get lumps of unseasoned tofu. That said, probably should've made it more concise in the edit lol. Also, you can always save & reuse the foil - or, don't use foil at all. Many of the comments here discuss ways to make this without foil.

@@harrypottersucks12 Thanks, haha! I think people are just wary of ingesting aluminum, but the parchment in between should protect the hotdog from contact with it.

A lot of people stop eating meat due to the cruel treatment of animals in the industry, not the taste of meat itself.
