How to make watercolour bookmarks - line and wash flowers

I said in last week's film that making watercolour bookmarks can be quite addictive! Well loads of people must share that addiction as over 25,000 people watched it in a week. How crazy is that?
Why are they so good? They're quick to do, so perfect if you are short of time. They are excellent for experimenting with new techniques or trying out new colours in a more imaginative way than simply swatching. They make great presents/gifts. If something works on a bookmark it can be scaled up into a painting. You can use them as a gentle introduction to mixed media. It's a super way of practicing your line and wash mark making. And who doesn't like a tassel?
In this film we will do a loose watercolour background, then add some flowers and leaves. I will show you a simple and effective flower and also a few more complicated ones. I then add a little opaque acrylic, but you could use gouache or other pens. Then it's time to seal them with wax to make sure they don't mark the book and of course, add the tassel.
Tassels can be found here (affiliate link) amzn.to/3KFXI5M
These are links to the pens I am using and Ohuhu have just offered 10% off if you use the code LizChader10 ( until 14 July 2024)
The Ohuhu watercolor markers: bit.ly/3wxFr7w
The arylic pens: bit.ly/4bhOtEP
The fineliners: bit.ly/3UV0YAh
The ideal size is 5.5x20cm which is 2.2 x 7.9 ins
They should be sealed before use to prevent any paint getting on your book should you spill some water. I like to wax them using Dorland's wax, but you could use any clear wax medium or even wax designed to go over chalk paint. You can also use an acrylic varnish.
You can find the Ohuhu acrylic markers here: www.eu.ohuhu.com - they are great and here is a full review I did after this film: • How good are these Ohu... .
Every like and comment tells KZfaq to show this to more people, so please jump in and share with your creative friends. If you really, really like this content and want to support me you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at: ko-fi.com/lizchadertonartist

Gorgeous colors. I may have to add some Rosa Gallery to my stash. They're amazing 😊 Great little art projects! The black 🖤 line on the reds ♥ is a great combo. Priceless tip on the wax sealers. I have been considering sealing my watercolor postcards. Now I know exactly what I need. Blessings from across the pond 🌎 🙏🏽

I am SO enjoying this series! (Is two considered a series?) Anyway I'd love to see more-maybe birds? Until my wax comes in, I thought these would make a great spread in an art journal. Just divide the page up with masking tape. I was thinking maybe choose 2 or 3 colors to have them all coordinate, just all done with a bit different mix of colors and line work. Maybe a set of the seasons, and now I foresee some sets of flowers. I'm always looking for simple things to do in my journal, and I think this idea is perfect! Thanks so much for sharing!

My experience: Using Dorland's Wax I also used my fingers. It is really a challenge to remove the wax from your hands. Caution: Use rubber gloves and apply with a rolled-up paper towel or small brush dedicated to the wax. A very thin coat works best. (Soap does NOT remove this from your hands.) Great product! Great results!

Hullo Liz, I do enjoy watching your videos and seeing your bookmark videos are especially fun! I love using Dorlands wax for postcards! I am hesitant about using it on my bookmark as I have had one melt onto a book page and so it rather ruined my book. I am happy to report that it was not a first edition or like that! Yes I read my books they are not just for collecting! So I have decided that I am only going to use silk bookmarks with my more expensive books! I live at the top of the Sacramento valley and we get high temperatures in the 100 & teens in the summer! That’s how my bookmark melted. So now I use a UV spray to protect them for use in my general book collections. You know Harry Potter & Percy Jackson, etc.
@LizChadertonArt

gosh, I have never had Dorlands melt, even leaving painting in a hot car. Yes a uv spray or a coat of mat gel medium is another alternative. Yikes, that’s hot!

It is a cold wax medium which contains beeswax and Damar resin. You might be able to substitute a clear furniture wax, as long as it won’t go yellow or crack

@@LizChadertonArtI make bookmarks and used Dorlands wax in the beginning, but I found some people don't like the feel of it. And I certainly didn't like the strain on my arm lol. So I looked for an alternative and discovered Crafter's Companion (that's an Aladdin's Cave all by itself!), and their spray varnishes - I chose the clear pearlescent/light glitter, and really like the subtle 'sparkle' it gives to the bookmarks. The only downside for me, is having to make sure I cover everything with a sheet, before I begin. And having to leave them to dry before turning them over, to spray the other side. Oh and it's the only time I ever don a mask! I love your bookmarks, and I think I'm going to be investing in the round corner punch.
