I have a wisteria I bought when pregnant with my son. He’ll be 21 in July & we’ve yet to see even one bloom! I’ve never pruned it, it’s climbed waaaaay up into a maple tree, so I’ll try my best. I have been hours trying to find a video like yours. Not many discuss pruning. I wonder if you might give me some pointers on how to successfully propagate wisteria. Thanks for your enquiry. I have been fortunate because I have never had to feed my Wisteria. If it needed a feed, I would give blood fish and bone meal in the spring. I would avoid high nitrogen feeds which stimulate growth, which the Wisteria does well on its own being a vigorous plant, better potash based feeds to encourage flowering. I would feed wisteria if it failed to flower. Good luck, Wisteria are one of our most lovely climbing plants to grow.

Hi Jody Wisteria grows best on fertile well-drained soil, but they are quite tough and vigorous which means they will tolerate most soil types although you will need to add some drainage to heavy clay. More important is to plant them where there is plenty of sun, west or south facing.

I would start to prune it as soon as it puts on growth so that you can get into shape and the twice yearly routine of pruning to encourage it to flower. When it first grows as a new plant, cut back the leader shoot to a bud and remove the laterals in the summer. In the following winter cut back leader shoot again , not so harshly and leave on some of the new growth so the leader shoot is longer. Cut back laterals by about a third and start to train laterals into the shape you want to plant to become which usually means training laterals horizontally along supports with one upward lateral, but you may have a different design and shape involved. As the Wisteria is now getting under way you can start to prune it as per the video winter and summer. I hope this helps.

Hi Susie, thank you for sharing your video. I bought a wisteria about 3 years ago, it wasn't in flower, and it hasn't really dine very much until this year. All of a sudden it has put on some new growth and is almost to the top of my pergola. Some of the new shoots are dying and the new growth looks a yellow and unhealthy. Should I cut back this new growth? Not had any flowers but I was expecting it to get a bit bigger first. If I cut back it will be back to the size it was last year.

This is one of the most informative videos I have come across regarding pruning wisteria. Thank you! I have some major wisteria overgrowth due to my recently purchased property being largely unoccupied for the last 20 years. The base is large enough that I'm guessing it is between 60 and 100 years old. How far back can I hard tune it in order to retrain this massive beast? I don't want to kill it, but I also need to get it out of my trees so I don't lose them!
@TheTsundaygardener

Hi I am so pleased to read you enjoyed the video. Renovating an overgrown Wisteria is not easy. You may want to consider pruning it back over two seasons and also, as you are no doubt aware, pruning now may interrupt the flowering cycle. I would start by removing anything which looks dead or diseased. You may want to revisit this once it has put on some leaves as you may then see more bare branches which can be removed. If you think about the shape you want to finish with, as in a single trunk with lateral branches running off at intervals you want to prune to achieve this removing excess branches and pruning it back to fit the space/wall it is growing over. I would not prune into the main trunk you may risk causing major damage/death. Given how mature it is and wanting to preserve it I would definitely consider this a project for over 2/3 years. You can remove all the dead parts now, but over the 2/3 years prune off more of the unwanted growth taking stock each year to see how the mature plant is responds to the prune. If laterals are growing from the base I would remove those. Hope this helps.

To quote from an old expert gardener friend (sadly deceased): "Wisteria, a damned rogue of a plant, just like a pretty woman (or a handsome man), wonderful for two weeks of the year, and a bloody nuisance for the rest of the year." !! I agree! I have a 100 y.o. Wisteria, very temperamental, flowering varies from year to year, I am still learning how to get the best flowers. Prune in August, remove long shoots as you say; prune in February - remember the number 2, cut new growth back to 2 buds, not 3, or 4, but 2. I have also read recently that the plant flowers best under stress, poor soil, low watering. 3 years ago, it had gotten out of control, so it got a hard pruning, it sulked for a year (just like a temperamental partner!), and put on a reasonable display last April. I've just pruned it (almost August), and there are plenty of flowering spurs for next year. Mine is West facing, but the best W's face South & like the HEAT. I've seen some magnificent specimens in N Thailand in the height of the hot / dry season. The quality of the original plant is also important, some great modern hybrids which don't go so far out of control. I live in hope for 2021. Nice vid BTW, thank you.

Hi Madhu Thanks for your question and I can understand why you ask it. I can only say that Wisteria is commonly grown against south facing house walls all over the country, it is a very common sight at this time of the year and I have not heard of complaints about it disturbing the foundations. I am not a surveyor, and if you had concerns, you would need advice from surveyor but if it worries you plant elsewhere to put your mind at rest.

Hi - it is not unusual for a Wisteria to fail to flower but very unusual for it to fail to grow as its a vigorous plant. The fact that it has only grown 2 meters in 10 years suggests the plant is either planted in an unsuitable position or more likely it is a poor plant. I would wait until spring next year , dig it out and buy a replacement, and buy a Wisteria which is in flower at the time of purchase, so you know it can flower, and it should thrive. I think you have a dud plant, which means, unfortunately, the only solution is to replace it.

Hi Susie Thank you so much for your kind comments I am delighted that you enjoyed the video. I have not propagated Wisteria, as you point out they grow so vigorously that one is often enough. If you are worried about your Wisteria overgrowing its space prune it back harder in the summer prune taking off even more of the young growth. The best advice on propagating Wisteria I can offer is a link to the RHS web site on Wisteria www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=404 which I hope you find helpful. Your question is timely as now is a good time to taking cuttings for propagation of Wisteria and many other popular garden plants such as Clematis, passion flower, rosemary, lavender, thyme, and good luck with the cuttings.

@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Pumba - you can grow Wisteria in a container, and some gardeners do that to restrict its growth so that it is more vigorous. If you grow it in a container you will need to ensure it is a good size, and that you water during very dry spells. It can sometimes be tricky to get Wisteria to flower make sure you buy one in flower so you know it will flower. If later it ceases to flower, (as I have known to happen with container grown Wisteria, )you may need to replant in the ground. However, generally, Wisteria can be grown successfully in containers.

Hi I am not sure in which part of the world you are gardening. If you cut wisteria from now until when it flowers, which in the UK is mid April to end of May, because it is late in the year if you cut back too much you will reduce the flowering. The routine is to prune hard at the end of the summer, July/August, and then prune again in February. If you have not pruned this year I would leave the Wisteria until July and then you can prune hard to reduce size. Hope this helps

Hi. We have a young plant about 3.5ft. Bought from a nursery in April. When should I start pruning it as some websites say after 1 or 2 summers but it is confusing as most advice is for established plants
@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 4 жыл бұрын
In the first summer prune, tie in the leader vertically and pick out two good strong laterals and tie them in horizontally. Prune side shoots to around 15cms. In the winter, prune laterals by about 1/3. In the second and subsequent years, you can begin to prune as normal, often increasing the level of pruning with time as the plant will become more vigorous as it gets established and needs more pruning to contain it and to get it to flower. I hope this helps- Carol.

I live in Canada where we get snow up to May, and it's impossible to prune in February because all the soils are covered in 30+ cm of snow. Do you think my Wisteria still has a chance?
@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tima - I am sorry I cannot be definitive in my response as I am not familiar with growing conditions in Canada. What I can tell you that Wisteria is hardy to about -20C but long term it will not flower well without a prune in February. When you have snow in May, it should be in bloom, so I doubt it. I think the degree of cold will not be such a problem as the late snow. One sure-fire way to know is if nobody else is growing it in the locality, chances are it will not survive where you are.

I've had a wisteria planted here at the New Jersey shore (very sandy soil) for over 10 years. It is vigorous and only flowered once (very small showing), what would you suggest as a feeding to get flowers. Thank you.
@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 7 жыл бұрын
For flowers you need a feed high in potash and low in nitrogen, which promotes leaf growth. The fertiliser/feed container will list the proportions on on it; look for one with high P. I assume you are following the pruning regime as otherwise no amount of feeding will bring it into flower.

@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rima, Wisteria will grow in a pot provided it is a large pot placed in a sunny position. There are now a number of smaller varieties of Wisteria such as Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' which only grows to three meters. You can also grow wisteria as a standard which, if you do not have garden space, may be helpful. Best Wishes Carol

@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 2 жыл бұрын
If you did, you would have to wait a very long time for it to flower measured in years rather than months. The best advice is to buy a small Wisteria in flower, at this time of year, so you know it will flower, and then follow the pruning regime.

How long does it generally take wisteria to go into bloom? I planted some 15 yrs ago now, it has nice big trunks and healthy green foliage but no flowering. Is it possible that I planted a wisteria that just will not bloom? Thank you 🙏
@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 2 жыл бұрын
Well, it doesn't take 15 years so I am sorry you do not have any blooms. If it is planted in a sunny spot and has been pruned, but is still not flowering I think it is down to a poor plant. You will note I say in the video and on the website that it is best to buy a plant in May which is in flower, so you know it will flower. It is best to buy a wisteria which is a grafted plant or grown from a cutting, not from seed that may never flower. It may be best to start again, which you could do by buying a grafted plant, in April /May with flowers on it, plant in full sun, prune it per the advice July and February, and it will flower. Hope this helps

Oddly, one of my Wisterias grew rapidly but never flowered, although regularily pruned. Then I planted it to an old plum tree to climb up, didn't prune it since (2 years) and this year it has flowers for the first time in 8 years that I have it. Some individuals don't seem to know the rules.

Hi there, I feel your friend needs specialist advice there are too many factors to take into account- it hasn't done this where I am growing wisteria but then it depends on the variety, ground conditions, climate, lots of different factors come into play and I don't feel qualified to comment- sorry.

Hi Lesley. To get Wisteria to flower it does need to be pruned twice a year and the second summer prune is done around now in July .Have a look at my web page on growing and pruning Wisteria sundaygardener.co.uk/how_to_grow_wisteria.html and check out the video dealing with the summer prune and then I would prune the Wisteria as per the information. You are not cutting it back to original size; prune off the long whippy growth as it shows on the page and video and then prune again in February and with some luck it should flower next spring. In one of your comments you mention blood fish and bone. I wish they sold it here in the United states premixed, I heard about it from the KZfaq channel Home Grown Veg, so I started mixing it up myself from the individual components. I’m putting it in with my veggies, and I’ll try my wisteria too. This is my first season trying it, we’ll see how it goes! 🤗😄 Thanks for your wonderful advice.

Can we plant those lateral growths which you cut off? It would be ashamed to throw them away.
@TheTsundaygardener
@TheTsundaygardener 3 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend it. firstly you will prune these laterals in August and if you want to propagate Wisteria by cuttings the time to do it is in Spring. It can also take a long time to raise Wisteria from cuttings. Once the Wisteria is mature you will have a lot of lateral cuttings, too many to contemplate planting. Best for compost.

Thanks for the comment and I am very pleased the video was helpful. I have always purchased Wisteria in flower to make sure it can flower so I haven't tried to grow from a cutting so the best I can do is to send a link to the authoritative RHS pages on the subject. www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=173 and if for any reason the link doesn't work search the web site for Wisteria.

I have a love hate relationship with my 2 wisterias. I did not research the plant and discovered way too late in the game that it spreads so fast getting out of hand under the ground choking out my other plants. Once this has started it is almost impossible to get it under control. I'd pot it under ground if I was to do this again. So much work to do on a plant to just bloom once a year. Beautiful? yes, but it can damage trees, houses and many other plants near by and destroy a garden. I don't think I'd ever plant a wisteria again. My branches are so thick that we have had to use a chain saw. Really! No garden tool I've ever seen could cut off these branches that went out of control. Don't plant until you have the time to take care of it. Way too much work if you don't get a hold of it from the beginning. Lesson learned and I'm hoping to get a handle on it soon.

I am sorry to bring bad news, but if your Wisteria has not flowered in 10 years, I don't have much hope it will. I would start again, and buy a wisteria now, so you can see it can flower. Wisteria being sold in garden centres at this time of year is coming into flower so start with a plant that will flower. If you go to my website www.sundaygardener.co.uk/how-to-grow-wisteria.html it has lots of growing tips including how to prune a new wisteria and then prune it twice a year. Make sure you plant your new wisteria in a sunny spot and hopefully next year you will have flowers. Any more questions just drop me a mail.
