Guineadad I have a big Question,when you shower with secented shampoo or wash your hands with a scented smell does your guinea pig not reconize you because you have a different scent???
@anniezhang9193 жыл бұрын
No, your guinea pigs will still recognize you because you have your "own smell" and that only like animal noses can smell because their sense of smell is a lot stronger than humans, so in short answer no, your guinea pigs will still recognize you.

The other one got brave with me really fast and after couple of months I was able to pet him without him running away (in the cage). The other guinea pig is still a bit shy if I try to touch him in the cage (he lets me do it sometimes), but he likes being held and cuddled after being picked up. Both guinea pigs are very comfortable now and trust us and are not scared of us anymore. It just took some time! It’s been a while and my Guinea pigs are still not passed lv 1. Ginger feels comfortable squealing and asking for food but immediately hide after not getting food within 30 seconds. Tar-tar only eats when I leave the room. I think it’s my fault they are like this because of my inability to keep a consistent schedule. I need to get better at time management and sticking with a daily schedule so we can finally make progress!

Ok so my guinea pig rocky I’ve had him for almost a whole year we don’t know how old he is at all but his past home he was neglected so badly. No hidie, barely any bedding, no hay or pellets, only got fed lettuce, got barked at a dog all day long. Since he had no hidie and was terrified of the dog he had terrible trust issues and is traumatized. He loveessss food but I try to bond with him everyday with so much food but idk what I’m doing wrong! You barely make a sound or walk by him or if he even sees a shadow move he runs and hides and teeth chatters. He is sooo scared and he’s a foster guinea pig but I can’t get rid of him until he is better. Plz help 😞

Aww, don't take it bad. Guinea pigs are prey animals, so they are naturally scared of everything. They are probably getting used to their new home. New change of environment, new people, and different sounds can really stress out guinea pigs. Just make sure they are in a safe, comfy, large enough space for them too, and away from other animals. Just be patient and try hand feeding them treats and calmly talking to them. It's going to take some time for them to settle in and be comfortable but just give it some time, it'll be worth it. :)

Typically any guinea pigs will take some time to form a bond. Start with not touching them, but in the same area, where they are able to come sniff and climb on you if they wanted to. Always helpful to have small bits of veggies or pea flakes in hand so they associate positive feeling with you.

I have heard the adjustment period done both ways: leave alone and touch a lot. I got a baby guinea pig back in October and I left her alone to adjust and she is still somewhat wild and hates being touched/held. I just got another baby guinea pig three weeks ago and I have been touching him every day to get him used to me. I don't know which is best, but I'm trying it this way since leaving the piggy alone backfired last time.

During the first 2 weeks is it better to not be around the cage? When I'm in the same room they just hide. I want them to drink/eat, which they do when I'm gone. Or should I stay for a bit so they can smell me and get used to my presence?
@GuineaDad3 жыл бұрын
It's actually okay to be around so that they will be familiar with your existence. Make sure you do not force yourself to them and pick them up anytime you like. Remember, you are like "Godzilla" big and they do not know for sure yet if you're going to hurt them or not. So it is important to let them come to you. Food is your best friend use it to your advantage. 🐹
